I saw this BBC News Online story last week,

UK multi-culturism under spotlight, by Roger Hardy, BBC “Islamic Affairs Analyst”, but didn’t have the energy to get stuck into it at the time. Thankfully, Dumbjon has been on the case, and has done a remarkably good demolition job, Beeb Bandwagon Hits Clue Tree, Reverses, Steers Round It, in his own inimitable style. The post below it is rather funny as well.

    Cockney, dear heart.

The previous post was addressed to you. But you probably recognised that.

global warming is certainly widely discussed.i agree with samuel brittan of the ft when he referred to those who talk of nothing else as “salvationists”
the bbc forces global warming down our throats all day every day.they do not tell us that there are many sceptics.

Many sceptics, although mysteriously none of them are climate scientists, and most are funded by oil companies. How very odd!

    John,

Whilst it’s admittedly not the main point of the site, you don’t see any hard ideas on here about what to do about Islamic terrorism in the UK. All agreeing that Islam is a fundamentally unpleasant religion, pandered to by misguided lefties isn’t an actionable idea. Other than sorting out the BBC’s coverage what would you do?

By the way, inspired by yourself and in the absense of any guidance from the BBC I looked into the fatwa issue last night. My source was Albert Hourani’s ‘History of the Arab people’ which I would recommend for anyone interested in (or terrified of) Islam – most of the stuff available currently seems to have been knocked up in 20 minutes to capitalise on the post 9/11 market.

Anyway, in summary a fatwa is only an opinion on an issue not clarified by existing Islamic jurisprudence. It may or may not end up being formally adopted, depending on the reputation of the issuer (apparantly there are lots of charlatans about with dubious claims to authority). Obviously in states without Islamic jurisprudence incorporated into national law the impact will be behavioural only.

As there are any number of strands of Islamic thought (i.e. Sunni/Shia subdivided ad infinitum and tied to specific geographical communities) a fatwa is only likely to be followed by those recognising the issuer. Although an effort seems to have been made to ensure as wide a range of British muslim leaders as possible have their name attached to the fatwa, it seems fair to say that nobody in Palestine, Iraq or Chechnya is likely to give a toss. Equally real zealots in the UK (even if British) are likely to have their religious allegience with radical sects overseas so will happily ignore it. What it will do is encourage UK muslims attached to the issuers to dob more potential terrorists in.

Cockney “to dob more potential terrorists in”

    More? How many to date?

Also re fatwa – if UK based imans so sure that terrorists are not Muslims, why no fatwa by a really big cheese grand mufti (or whatever) at Mecca HQ?

You may recall earlier this year that the police were keen to tell us that they’d thwarted hundreds of terrorist plots in the UK (but for obvious reasons couldn’t give details). Presumably some of these were down to tip offs.

As I kind of inferred, there ain’t a single big cheese grand mufti with indisputable authority over the lot of them in Mecca or anywhere else.

the bbc is not very good at doing “breaking news” specially when it is prolonged.so they go on and on asking the same inane questions to stretch out the story.
today philip hayton? who is sometimes rather silly asked the silliest question of the day.
eye witness mark whitby described how the terrorist was shot five times.philip h responded with “did he die?” mr whitby burst out laughing.
it is certainly not a laughing matter but i reached for the remote.

As a matter of fact many global warming sceptics are climatologists. On the other hand a surprising number of its proponents seem to have their degrees in unrelated fields….
