    Market Participant, there are some problems with the case as it is reported. Gates of Vienna went in to this one here. The short of it is that Adem, even if he knew what had happened, would not have done the deed. FGM is never performed by men, and always by women. This is the final and most absolute part of the cruelty of FGM.

    However, that isn’t the point. The trial was a travesty. If he knew about the act then he’s guilty of being an accessory, but the cultural evidence indicates he probably didn’t know, and he certainly didn’t take part in it.

    Hm, something I didn’t make clear: I’m not saying the trial shouldn’t have taken place or anything like that, but that the actual verdict rests on weak ground. The mother is presumably the one who actually did the mutilation but throughout this trial she’s established a facade of innocence. If Adem now goes on to get the verdit quashed in an appeal, who will they prosecute?

    The entire family should have been held responsible for this. It’s inconcievable that the mother would not have noticed her own child’s mutilation for several years after the event.

    The jury in the Kriss Donald murder trial has been told that his death was an “appalling crime of inhumanity against a defenceless boy”.
    The 15-year-old schoolboy was allegedly abducted from Pollokshields in Glasgow, stabbed and set on fire in 2004. Summing up, advocate depute Mark Stewart said the accused had condemned themselves “from their own mouths”.
    Mohammed Faisal Mushtaq, 27, Zeeshan Shahid, 28, and Imran Shahid, 29, deny racially aggravated murder.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_west/6110284.stm

    During more than four weeks of evidence at the High Court in Edinburgh, the trial has heard prosecution claims that Kriss, 15, was snatched from the street in Pollokshields, driven to Dundee and back in a silver Mercedes before being stabbed, doused with petrol and set on file.

    Prosecution claims BBC?

    He was snatched
    The vehicle used was a Silver Merc
    He was stabbed
    He was doused in petrol
    He was set on fire. (And not file as you write)

    France to declassify Rwanda files

    France says it will release classified documents on the Rwandan genocide, after claims that French troops were complicit in the 1994 massacre. The Rwandan Tutsis, aged between 25 and 39, have brought their case against the French military in the French courts. During the genocide some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by Hutu extremists.
    French troops were sent to Rwanda as part of a United Nations force.
    Rwanda has repeatedly accused Paris of complicity in the genocide. France has denied any role. The four survivors say French troops committed crimes themselves, and also let Hutu killers enter refugee camps under their protection.
    An inquiry began last month in Rwanda into alleged French complicity in training and arming the Hutu extremists.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6110646.stm

    Alleged BBC. Here please allow me to enlighten you on that so called allegation that the French armed the Hutu.

    Delivery from France
    In the early morning of January 22, 1994, a DC-8 aircraft loaded with armaments from France, including 90 boxes of Belgian-made 60 mm mortars, was confiscated by UNAMIR at Kigali International Airport. The delivery was in violation of the cease-fire clauses of the Crushable Accords, which prohibited introduction of arms into the area during the transition period. General Dallaire put the arms under joint UNAMIR-Rwandan army guard. Formally recognizing this point, the French government argued that the delivery stemmed from an old contract and hence was technically legal. Dallaire was forced to give up control over the aircraft.

    UNAMIR’s Kigali sector commander, Belgian Col. Luc Marchal, reported to the BBC that one of the French planes supposedly participating in the evacuation operation arrived at 0345 hours on 9 April with several boxes of ammunition. The boxes, about 5 tons, were unloaded and transported by FAR vehicles to the Kanombe camp where the Rwandan Presidential Guard was quartered. The French government has categorially denied this shipment, saying that the planes carried only French military personnel and material for the evacuation.

    Soldier to sultan
    How a peacekeeper became Nigeria’s Muslim leader;

    He commanded a battalion of African peacekeepers in Chad during the early 1980s as part of the Organisation of African Unity’s force and was military liaison officer for the West African regional body Ecowas in the mid 1990s.
    Later he served in Ecowas’ peacekeeping force when it intervened in Sierra Leone’s bloody civil war, leading a tank battalion.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/6110800.stm

    Intervened BBC? Ecowas did nothing of the sort. In fact BBC the Nigerians were the most corrupt people in Sierra Leone;
    “Were there problems with the UN presence?
    In May 2000, the then UN force commander in Sierra Leone launched an extraordinary attack on the Nigerian presence in the UN force. Major General Vijay Jetley accused top Nigerian officials in Freetown of “working hard to sabotage the peace process”, and the Nigerian army command of looting diamonds in league with Mr Sankoh.”http://www.guardian.co.uk/theissues/article/0,6512,218625,00.html

    and before anybody tries to trip me up on the above;
    Amnesty International calls on ECOWAS to ensure that:

    • all West African troops in Sierra Leone adopt a determined approach to fulfil UNAMSIL=s mandate to protect civilians. Troops must also be provided with the necessary logistical support to fulfil this mandate;

    • those alleged to have been responsible for human rights violations while serving previously in Sierra Leone as part of the ECOWAS Cease-fire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) are not among those troops who are to deployed in Sierra Leone as part of UNAMSIL;
    http://web.amnesty.org/library/Index/ENGAFR510572000?open&of=ENG-2F5

    In fact BBC it took the deployment of 2000 British troops to arrest and repair the damage that 20,000 UN troops did to SL. And guess what BBC those 2000 troops took under a year to remove the Libyan back insurgences. A lot less time than it took the UN. So please spare me the platitudes about how the new Muslim leader of Nigeria is in fact a peacekeeper.

    but then again, i’ve noticed a woeful lack of proper European news coverage from the BBC.

    its the small things i’ve noticed – in my own case, a total non-reporting of the St Paddys day parades in Dublin.

    why point that out? well, because on the same day, a New York regiment , the “Fighting 69th”, just back from Iraq, took center stage in the NYC paddys day parade.

    UK youths ‘among worst in Europe’

    Britain’s teenagers are among the most badly behaved in Europe, a study by a think-tank has suggested. On every indicator of bad behaviour – drugs, drink, violence, promiscuity – the UK was at or near the top, said the Institute for Public Policy Research. The institute looked at the results of a number of studies of adolescents conducted in recent years. The researchers believe the country’s record can be explained by a collapse in family and community life in the UK.

    Measured against German, French and Italian youngsters, British 15-year-olds are drunk more often and involved in more fights, and a higher proportion have had sex.

After seen how the BBC brainwashes out young with programs such as Eastenders, Torchwood, and the rest of their Low grade programs which enforce the image that sex is love. Sunk Falklands ship safety ‘poor’

    An inquiry into the sinking of HMS Sheffield at the height of the
    Falklands War said crew were poorly trained and equipment was
    inadequate.
    The ship sank on 4 May 1982 with the loss of 20 men after being hit

    Details of the inquiry into the sinking have emerged in previously
    classified documents released under the Freedom of Information Act.

    They found firefighting was poorly co-ordinated and pumps were

    Wilby does not say that the BBC itself adopts any opinion (respectable or otherwise).
    He talks about the BBC’s ‘editorial default position’ – meaning the editorial judgment exercised in choosing whom to have on in an interview programme or to take part in a discussion.

    Actually he is wrong. Though the BBC may have a ‘default position’ of ‘respectable, informed opinion’ most of the time, the BBC also has a duty to reflect (from time to time) extremist, maverick, outlandish or simply unusual opinion. That’s why it sometimes has on Nick Griffin, Tariq Ali, Robert Kilroy-Silk, Abu Izadeen and Denis McShane (…..sorry Denis, just joking..).

    Though Wilby was wrong on that bit, he did make 3 good points:

    “A service that accommodates Jeremy Clarkson in Top Gear, allows Melanie Phillips to rant on The Moral Maze, turns Boris Johnson into a media star, and gives bishops free airtime during its peak morning radio show doesn’t strike me as uniformly liberal or atheistic.”

    “As anybody who has dealt with a convinced supporter of Israel or Palestine knows, people who themselves take an unbalanced view will not see your view as balanced, no matter how hard you try. ”

    “In opinion polls, the BBC consistently scores far higher for trustworthiness than any of the newspapers that criticise it. “

  43. Bob says:

    Wilby forgets that the left never criticise the BBC. And his especial mention of the only 2 ‘non default position’ people who (occasionally) appear on the BBC – Melanie Phillips & Clarkson – only makes the standard position clearer.

  44. John Reith says:

    Bob

    Melanie Phillips and Jeremy Clarkson do not only ‘occasionally’ appear on the BBC, they have regular slots.

    Over and above that, they quite frequently appear on other shows.

    In any case, these two would come under Wilby’s heading of ‘respectable, informed’. They are part of the default position, not outside it.

Reminds me of something BBC reporter Justin Webb said a few months ago along the lines that in the US the young don’t watch the news, the right read blogs and watch FOX, which leaves CNN/ABC etc fighting over whats left.

    Al-J English is staffed by ex-BBC (Raggy Omar etc) and can only further dilute the BBC’s audience and therefore rationale for enforced licence fee. I wish Al-J well.

    Yes, JR, that’s the point. Not only canb you name individually the right-wingers allowed on the BBC, but that when they’re allowed on, they’re either licenced buffoons (and how right wing is ‘gunships in New Orleans’ Clarkson ?) or they’re providing commentary ‘from the Right’, like MP.

    Meanwhile, James Naughtie, Kirsty Walk, the Five Live team et al are providing ‘objective news reports’. The whole thrust of the BBC’s output is that soft Liberalism is simply objective truth, with the Right as the wacky ‘other’.

    Yes. And why describe Melanie Phillips as a ranter?

    The irony of that description is that she normally gets ranted at and before she can adequately reply she will be cut off by michael burke or david dimbelbore.

    We don’t pay much attention here to that sort of criticism of the beeb.

    But we’ll be getting back to you when it turns out that all the trouble is the fault of an unholy alliance between the US religious right and Mossad.

    We already know that the gays wont be the villains.

    My bet is that:

    1) in a brilliant stroke of diplomacy osama bin liner saves the world and is made secretary-general of the un by acclaim.

    2) the President of the USA, having made many huge mistakes simply because he is a Republican, converts to democrat, makes no more mistakes and invites iran to join NAFTA.
