It’s my view that the BBC has wilfully chosen to present the news that Marks and Spencer’s sales have “only” fallen by 4% in the last trading quarter as a possible greeen shoot of recovery. This is sheer foolishness but I wonder of it helps Gordon as world figures arrive in the UK for the G20 summit to pretend that our “well-placed” economy is on the way up? Not waving, drowning.

I guess the BBC could make good news out of a turd being flushed down the toilet pan.
And the BBC just love M&S don’t they?

Sorry, I don’t want to be one of these crazies arguing here, but I have a close friend working in the financial sector regarding M&S, and they were expecting a much bigger fall. So in that context, ”only” is good news. That said, the better than expected slump is only because economists are quite rightly (finally) waking up the grim outlook ahead. There aren’t any green shoots yet. Economists realised their sunny outlook wasn’t fooling anyone, so a realistic, and maybe slightly pessimistic, forecast is the trend from now on.
The rough and tumble of an individual retailers results is not evidence of recession or recovery, any more than one days rain or sun is evidence of climate change.
Show me results for IKEA, Primark and Topshop? M&S is just a shop, its food is overpriced, and fashion gooods likewise. So what? Its a measure of the shallowness of economy-reporting by GCSE-level journalists
M&S is special though isn’t it? er no not really. Just because BBC middle class pr4tts shop there and it’s all UK made clothing….except it isn’t anymore. They’ve finally had enough of McSnotty’s taxes and offshored.
Food is OK but pricey. Perfect for the brain dead loons at the beeb. The beeb loons probably recommend a M&S Chianti that washes down the cocaine nicely.
What a friendly interview with Sir Stuart! God forbid he should be embarrassed – while delivering such good news – by any mention of the furore over his being both CEO and chairman of a major public company. Bias – possibly; crap journalism – certainly!
The BBC`s other favourite store is Sainsburys. Well the family have shovelled money to Labour, so it`s only right.
