So, one day after D-day and the site is still here and I have been closely following your comments. I want to let you know that we will try and follow up all your positive and thoughtful suggestions, wherever this is possible.
There are a few things that I have decided ARE staying on blog – such as the Twitter bar. The reason is that this enables me to post a quick comment which may be on the BBC whenever I hear or see it. If some don’t like this, tough. Furthermore, it may be that the blogger platform is imperfect but trust me there is no such thing as a perfect platform.
Some people have commented regarding the siting of A Tangled Web and All Seeing Eye at the top of this site. I would simply point out the huge behind the scenes work that Geoff from the Eye makes to this site (Ever wondered who makes the weekly Question Time session run smoothly) and just like ATW he also picks up on BBC related issues – so both blogs are staying, linked here – to be augmented with others. The broader blogroll will also develop. This is WORK IN PROGRESS – but progress it is. So my thanks to all who come here – hope the shock of the new is now wearing off – and from tomorrow on I only want to talk about the lousy BBC and the bias it exudes. Hope you agree!
Agree with you about Twitter David. It’s very useful for immediate prompts. I rather like your new format.
I like it, fresh and minty but also slightly chewy.

Agree about Twitter. We don’t want to know if you’re walking down a strand on a sunny afternoon!
Why not make a B-BBC Twitter and just post relevant stuff. Because the thing is, it’s.not.about.you!

May I ask one question?
I note your blog and that of Geoff is linked at the top and also in the left hand side bar blogroll, and your twitterings are the main content of the right hand side bar.
My question.
Is there room for the other contributors?

David,
The long term contributors must feel agrieved at being left out now that it has been pointed out. It wasn’t very decent of you to over look them.
That said, I’m not too happy about the comments. I can’t enlarge the box, and the site has always been comment driven.
It doesn’t feel very anti bbc-ish. Too gimmicky.
regards.
A B-BBC reader.

As a war veteran of B-BBC past (oh, do I get given a farm? How very kind!) I must say that, whatever the faults in the new design (hate the faddy twitter stuff – it’s well named) the re-design has brought in a lot of fresh commenters and that must be a very good thing indeed.
I suggest we give it time. After a while, the rough edges will get worn off.

You can be sure that David will be flogging his book here in the coming months and it will get a very prominent position on the page!
Mark my words.

I like the new format. I come here every day but I rarely post.
Keep up the good work David.

Well, the design is definetely a lot better – it looks a lot more professional and that’s what we needed, I guess.
I also think Twitter is overrated but David’s right, you can post a quick message from any internet capable device so it’s probably a must.

The first paragraph below ‘About Biased BBC’ at the top right should not be between quotation marks. Unlike the paragraphs below, it is not quoting someone else, rather, it is meant to be a statement of fact. It wasn’t between quotation marks on the old design.

Disagree. Twitter is very handy especially if you are on a mobile phone or similar.
Ignore the Daily Mail nonsense about Twitter.

Just as I got my computer to tell me how many unread comments there were on the old system, that facility has gone! Can I add my name to those asking if that can be restored? Or perhaps comments could be numbered. It’s not easy to scroll down the comments trying to remember which was the last one I read, particularly as only the time of each comment is given, not the day.
I’d also have to agree that the heading takes up too much of the initial screen. I think it could be reduced in height without reducing its impact.
As for Twitter, I don’t see the point but that’s probably an age thing.

Website design is partly a matter of style, and partly of HTML mechanics – translating the style decisions into actual code.
The mechanics have been made far easier by use of standard templates, cascading style sheets and all that.
The mechanics should therefore be secondary – the primary decisions should be about style, general layout. Most of which is good. But if there are matters of style that need changing, the mechanics these days are surely relatively straightforward, as so much is done using templates. Dropping something, for example, is a simple deletion of a piece of HTML coding or text.
…….
In sum, dropping the twitter stuff that drives the rel content off the screen is a style choice. On which we clearly disagree. I can’t see any benefit of adding Twitter to the top left body of the site that outweighs the effect of driving the MAIN text right off the screen.
And if you chose to drop the Twitter stuff – a STYLE decision – if you need help in amending the HTML code I’d be happy to have a look at it. Likewise if you wanted to move it eg to the right, to avoid driving the main text off the screen.
