So, the Conservative Party conference finishes and up pops Lord Mandelson on the Today programme to explain the genius idea by Gordon Brown to flog off various State owned assets. I think he was given a very soft ride not least on the fact that selling assets at the bottom of the market is unlikely to realise the prices Brown imagines – Davis could have pressed a lot further. He also might have wondered why a fire-sale that at most will realise £3bn over two years would deal with a deficit that it £16bn and growing? Mandelson must have been grinning from ear to ear as he was also allowed to entirely misrepresent the economic position taken by Japan over the past twenty years. Surely with his economic background, Evan could have interrogated Mandelson a little harder? Or is it all hands on deck to try and save Gordon?

As I’ve commented before, as long as the BBC is onside, Labour can take the desertion by the Sun in its stride.
Nevertheless, I must admit to some disappointment since I’ve always considered Davis one of the more incisive interviewers no matter who the interviewee is. Perhaps next time the Conservatives are requested to nominate a spokesman to be interviewed by Evan they will choose a member of http://gayconservative.org/ which might ensure a “light touch” interview on the lines of today’s love-in with Mandy.
I didn’t hear this one but the poisoned mince was all over the other networks, but no one bothered to point out McDoom has a habit of selling things off (like Gold) at rock bottom prices.
and the 3 billion (if raised) is but a drop in an ever growing state. Labour just don’t get it.
Nearly as easy a ride as Johnathon Freedland got on the Daily Politics this afternoon.
Freedland allowed carte blanche when accusing the Tories of siding with alleged SS symathisers in the EU, Dan Hannan cut off and not allowed free response.
The point has now been made and a response cut short – good work all at the daily Politics, No. 10 are extremely happy, keep up the good work.
As for Mandy this morning, his verbal gymnastics got the better of Davies from the moment he said Good Morning.

Yes, the Guardian and the BBC continue their seemingly never-ending campaign on this issue.
At least today’s programme gave Dan Hannan a minute or two to make the case for the defence. Last Friday’s programme ended with the same subject & gave no right to reply whatsoever to anyone in the Conservative Party (or their European allies).
This follows a pattern as Michael Crick ended a report on last Monday’s ‘Newsnight’ with Miliband’s accusations of anti-semitism about Mr Michel Kaminski, leaving the allegation hanging in the air. The topic was not mentioned again throughout the entire programme, so never debated.
Back on Evan Davis, he got surprisingly flustered during a previous interview with Mandy & now seems to be treading very gingerly.
