So, let me see if I get this right. When some Irish Gypsies decide to go ahead and build despite planning permission, and the Council moves to evict them, the question we must ponder is; “Does evicting people from the largest traveller site in England amount to ethnic cleansing?” Thus ponders Jeremy Vine. And we should also note that BBC sympathy for the “Travelling Community” in this situation is shared by luminaries such as Vanessa Redgrave and what the BBC terms “activists from Sweden, Italy, Belgium and France.” There was an interview with Basildon Councillor Tony Ball (link is broken for some reason) on the BBC this morning and one cannot help but feel that the BBC entirely sympathises with those Irish Gypsies concerned and has contempt for the Council and the ratepayers of Basildon. I wonder why?

Spooky that this topic should come up now. Central Hampshire has been hit in the past week or two by nightly invasions of Caravan Utilising Nomadic Travellers. They’re driving all over the fields late at night (1.30am on saturday – I know because my band was packing away after a gig!), chasing hares and deer (the biggest threat to the brown hare isn’t modern farming itself, it’s farmers killing them so the pikeys have got nothing to chase). While they’re driving round the countryside they’re picking up anything that they fancy – tools, straw (worth a fortune these days), dogs…
I once aked the Chief Constable for his perspective. A group of travellers, he said, were no more trouble than a group of farmers. There speaks a politician, not a policeman.
Frankly, Chuffer, that sounds like the same breed of modern bobby who told us that he wasn’t bothered about ‘our’ antis wearing balaclavas because he “couldn’t see a problem”.
Strangely, that bit of advice went out of the window when they were unfortunate enough to unwittingly assault a plain-clothes PC one Saturday……..

I fail to see the problem regarding the evictions. Surely it boils down to:
1) Did they have planning permission?
2) If they didn’t, why should they, uniquely, be allowed to get away with it? If I’d done it I’d have been made to demolish well before now.
Of all the Gramscian subversions of Western civilisation championed by the BBC, the elevation to sainthood of the anti-social, violent, criminal, and binge drinking Southern Irish traveller community must be the most successful. One can perhaps empathise to a degree with some of the leftie aims to promote equality and fairness, even though their implementation always entails corruption and oppression, but the worship of travellers appears to have no upside whatsoever.
There is little electoral upside for the lefties because the travellers don’t vote, and there is no revenue bonus to fund the leftie causes because the travellers pay next to no tax.
The only reason I can see for the lionisation of travellers is that they provide the left with an excuse to attack the victims of the traveller lifestyle, usually middle class home owners unfortunate enough to find themselves living within a mile of a travellers camp.

The Tory minister said simply yes, that’s why we’re freeing up the regulations on planning permission for new homes. But then a spokesman was given far more airtime saying that more ‘urban sprawl’ was not the answer, and that not only the green belt should be protected. Why was he not asked for his views on gypsies building without regulation or permission wherever they wish?

All in all, it rather appears that the Beeb want to promote the narrative of a housing problem festering under this government, but completely ignore the possible solutions. Either we have tight, top-down planning laws and stick to them whether we’re gypsies or not, leading to rising house prices as our population goes up, or we have looser regulation, more housing and less green space!!!

Good point about distinguishing between Gypsies and travellers. The Romany are a discrete ethnic – and highly interesting – people.
Furthermore, travellers are not exclusively Irish; other nations are represented amongst the ‘travelling community’.
When it comes to travellers, experiences vary; mine have not been pleasant. We have regular groups of ‘English’ travellers who visit our small town; with them they bring a fair share of drunkenness, petty crime and garbage. The f**-you attitude; the ‘I know my rights’ mentality; the selfishness as they occupy a communal space and cause no shortage of inconvenience to locals. Friends of mine have endured similar experiences, sadly.
I am sure there other bands of travellers who pay Council Tax, hand out sweets to local children and bring abundant happiness to all four corners of the country. Unfortunately, I have yet to meet them.

Unfortunately, the romantic notion of Travellers as a unique and special ethnic and cultural group is entrenched in academia. The June issue of History Today had a big piece warning (yes, warning) the reader about the awful rising prejudic against these noble people.
Yes, the article was about the lovely people at Dale Farm.
A People on the Outside
History Today is generally a terrific magazine: when discussing history. Sadly, in the last few years, they’ve taken to also publishing Left-wing polemics about contemporary issues as well. This is one of them.
The article begins by explaining that the Roma are an historical ethnic group from India, long-excluded from society, hence the outdoor, nomadic lifestyle etc. (nothing nobody here doesn’t know), and then conflates them with Travelers. There is no explanation at all of the unique ethnic origins of Travelers. The author instead lumps them together, hoping the reader won’t notice, and then spends the rest of the time defending the Travellers, as if they had the same history as the Roma. To drive this Narrative, the author always refers to them as “Gypsy Travellers”.
The ultimate message is that the Travelers have “modernized”, just like you and me, and their illegal encampments must be tolerated because it’s the only way they know how to join a cruel society which has mistreated them for so long. And it would be a shame to do to them what Sarkozy did to the Roma. Seriously, that’s what these people think.
If the BBC ever interviews Becky Taylor about this, you’ll know why.
Gypsies are all over Europe including the UK and Ireland. It’s seems to be in the UK that some people romanticise Romanies. In France and Italy recently, they have come down hard on them, following problems in the areas where they congregated and got rid of their illegal camps and deported them. Historically they have been mostly hated in a number of central and eastern European countries.
I recall being in Czechoslovakia not long after the Iron Curtain fell. We were warned by our tour guide, a local, “Look out for the gypsies, they’re all thieves”. To a collective gasp from all us Brits, because you just can’t say things like that.
We soon found out the error of our ways. And I learned that just because something isn’t politically correct doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

I didn’t hear all of Dame Nikki’s lefty spout this morning but did anyone suggest that perhaps Ms Redgrave should invite all these people to go and live with her… I’m betting not.

Jeremy Vine is very fair here. He is definitely not siding with the Travellers and is clearly trying to make the point that they are not above the law.
I guess he shouldn’t be instructing his audience to call in and defend them after a particularly cutting caller against them. Yeah, he’s supposed to strive for balance, but that was a bit over the top.
Really can’t stand the music he plays, though.
To help the Gypsy cause and In keeping with ‘Page Eight’, the BBC socialist group have submitted the following plot to be written as a play by Mr David O’hare. Single parent Irish traveller Mary Murphy stumbles upon a plan to setup an illegal US torture camp in the green belt. This is the reason why planning permission is always denied for travellers as the authorities do not want the camp discovered.
She heroically attempts to alert the press but is thwarted by the authorities, until she has the brilliant idea getting Vasnessa Redgrave to sponsor a group of dancers for the Notting hill carnival. Her plan is that while the group are filmed by the equally heroic BBC, the performance of Riverdance has been cunningly choreographed so that her story is encoded as Morse code in the tapping of the dance steps.
Left wing jounalist, Rosie Boycott (the one who’s always banging on about the limitless benefits of mass immigration and diversity) has a bloody great farm down in Somerset. Masses of open pace, organic produce, free parking.

Jeff there all the same. I work for an organistion that used to boast on it’s website how they encouraged people living in culturally diverse ethnic communities. One director lives in Overton Hampshire, another in Reigate and the last in the Cotswolds. I usually find people who earn vast amounts of public money and never actaully engage being part of something that actually is needed by the population are generally the worse hypocrites.
I’m reminded of another dozy luvvie Emma Thompson, who is a big supporter of ‘Plane Crazy’ the eco terrorists who want to stop Heathrow being expanded.
Of course the one question the BBC NEVER put to her was the obvious one, perhaps if she and her luvvie mates stopped flying to Hollywood every 5 minutes Heathrow might not need a new runway.

There is a minority victim group in the country they’re called the hard working decent people who get treated like shite by the left and almost all politicians. never has so much been paid out for so many by so few. A chap I know via work is a mix of Indian and Portuguese. Born in Goa his family moved to Obama’s blood father’s Kenya, Mombasa in fact. This chap Alex says his father always said that when the evil barbaric British ruled the country actually worked, was fair, just and provided so many important things like proper education, yet people like the Redgrave’s and their pervy father hated what they naively feel is oppression. I was in the Workers Revolutionary Party when the Redgrave’s rode high in the thespian cadre group. Nutty and posy as fruitcakes the lot of them. I can remember Corin having a heart attack live during the making of a documentary, about I believe, the same pikey campsite.

I just had the misfortune to sit and watch the bilge coming out of the “One” show for 5 minutes which has now also become an opportunity for left wing drivel to pour out on all the unjust of it all, breaking up a community and families that have been established for 10 years, etc etc but when Mohammed comes in from the middle east without his family (until later on), the beeboids are not so concerned about a family being broken up then are they?
In todays Times Ros Clark argues that as the Travellers have purchased the land legally then they must be allowed to stay.
The question I would like answered is was the money to buy the land earned legally and was it declared for tax purposes? Indeed can the Travellers evidence that all their assests, caravans 4x4s etc have been purchased from taxed income?
Human Rights is a long winded approach, get the police and authorities some guts and carry out some proper checks, lets see the Liberal Lefties who do not seem to mind benefit cheats, line up with tax cheats, that’s a different ball game.
A few investigations and prosecutions pluse seizure of assests should help move them on.
There may be good travellers but there are also some really bad ones. BBC journalists tell us how prejudiced we are to be concerned about travellers. My experience of Irish travellers was – A successful business collapsed after they set up on it’s site .Children driving vans and cars on public roads, burnt out cars, increased crime etc. etc. The Police would not get involved. I listened to the Irish radio Station on 252Khz long wave, broadcasting a program about Irish travellers and the problems they caused. It was a long way from the candy floss fairy tale BBC version.

Really we should encourage the BBC to continue supporting the travellers. Nobody else does apart from looney luvvies. It will perhaps open eyes to the daftness of BBC attitudes and hasten calls for an end to the tax.

Nowhere in the article is any voice given to any LOCALS that might be less than charitable or probably absolutely livid at the double standards at play. My local ITV Anglia News has done just that. One local saying that he feared impending trouble from the ‘tree huggers’ that were getting involved. Can you imagine a comment like that getting through the editting process on the BBC? No, me neither.

Just checked the ‘related stories’ at the bottom of the artcle. None of them even mentions any negative opinions of the locals who live nearby. Plenty about human rights, gathering protesters, campsites, vegan meals, welcome packs for supporters, resistance strategies and mock eviction practice. They’re really getting into it, aren’t they.
Correction…just found one single reference to disapproving attitudes from local residents, which is dismissed imediately in the following sentence. I’m sure you can guess what the line is :

The reality? We the ordinary law abiding majority have been abandoned by the political class, we only matter in how much money can be extracted from us. Our rights and freedoms stripped away, our dignity trampled on, our fears and our troubles laughed at. We are being provoked and baited and made to feel that while others are above the law that we must obey the political class spits and laughs at us from behind its high walls. What is the law if it only applies to some? What good is the law if it protects the law breakers and not the law abiding? There is either total equality before the eyes of the law or there is no law, there is either real justice or there is no justice. We the ordinary people have a contract with those who govern us, we obey the law, a law that is blind and fair and equal and that protects the law abiding and punishes the law breaker. This contract has been broken now and we did not break it.
The law applies to all or it applies to none, justice is universal or there is no justice. If the English people are famous for one thing it is our sense of fairness, the law is the law and we live and prosper knowing that it is our sure shield against the misery and moral poverty that prospers in other lands. Now that justice has crumbled, some people enjoy exemptions, some groups enjoy the status of ‘victims’ a status they do not deserve. Our democracy is crumbling, eaten by a grotesqe cancer of inequality and organised victimhood. Murderers can kill, thieves can steal, the corrupt can prosper, the wicked can scheme and plot and the law abiding majority are forced to suffer the awful indginity of it all and the utter shame of it is making us angry.
We live now in a time of degenerate politicians, corrupt elites, social breakdown, the death of a trust between us that whatever our differences in wealth and status we all stand equal before blind and fair justice. Well we no longer stand equal before blind and fair justice do we? Some, the law breakers and the selfish and the corrupt and the crooked and the criminal now stand apart and above the rest. We who gave our consent to be governed have been betrayed and abandoned, we who live love and work and obey the law are now being insulted and demeaned every day, the law no longer works for us, it has become our tyrant, our wicked despot. We are coming to the point of rebellion against those who now rule us with utter contempt.

I caught a bit of the awful One Show last night as they were doing the gypsy camp item. What struck me was the way the BBC were playing quaint folksy/guitary music in the background every time they talked to the gypsies or the lefties who have turned up to defend the camp. They really wanted to paint the gypsies as harmless, traditional residents. No such music for when they talked to the council bloke or the residents who are opposed to the illegal part of the camp. No, make them come across as heartless uncaring people.
Oh and doing a Craig – time given to the council / residents against the illegal camp – 1m 19s, time given to the gypsy residents / lefty defenders – 1m 56s.
Vine has Vanessa Redgrave on his programme today at 12:30 talking about this. Fortunately other radio stations are available.
