Well, it’s pretty clear that the BBC is unhappy that Tom Winsor is the preferred new Chief Inspector of Constabulary for England and Wales. On Today this morning they provided two slots for critics to have a pop at Mr Winsor, one at 7.09 and another @ 8.16am. Lining up behind the Police Federation, the BBC will undoubtedly provide a pulpit for all those like Paul McKeever who put their self interest before the public interest. As more and more Public Sector Unions – and let’s be honest that is what the Police Federation is – line up to wage war against the Coalition, they can rely on the State Broadcaster to feather the flames of discontent.
THE WINSOR BOY…

I heard the 8:16 interview and, in all honesty, thought Mr McKeever was allowed to look a right chump. “This is the first step in the privatisation of the police”. I don’t think he did his case any good.
I noted in the 8:00 am bulletin that the newsreader announced that a LibDem minister had said Theresa May PROBABLY had good reason to choose Mr Winsor. With a huge emphasis on the word PROBABLY, a clear attempt to show up coalition infighting. In fact I think the actual quote was “probably, almost certainly”.

“This is the first step in the privatisation of the police”. If that isn’t pure, unadulterated, socialist, public sector trade union-speak, I don’t know what is.

Unfortunately it is true…companies like G4S are taking over many of the police’s functions and operational responsibilities….not sure I’m too happy with that myself:

This is going to make police service far worse than it already is. And once this starts, there’s no turning back.

Interesting how the BBC seems to think organisations regulating themselves with former members is a Good Idea
I wonder how they come to that conclusion?

Arf.
It seems to be informing the DG ‘race’.
Though the OFCOM guy seems ‘acceptable’ too, for some odd reason.

They`re institutionally racist aren`t they?
And what are the BBC doing if not giving a platform to racists like the Met, ACPO or PF?
See what I did there?
Therefore like a well-trained Beeboid, I need not listen and put the whale music on.
All hail the House of Winsor…if the BBC don`t like him then I do.
He`s right -too many fat coppers too!
Got a plane to catch….leave the replies in my goodie basket Quentin!…LOL

I can only analyse the situation this way. The bBC usually knock the police. Winsor and the Police are at loggerheads. Winsor is supported by May. The bBC hate Tories, therefore hate May, therefore the y have to be against Winsor. So the bBS support the Police, but didn’t I started this by saying the bBC usually knock the Police. There’s my interpretation of bBC logic for you.

Anyone reading the Winsor Report would wonder why anyone would be against its recommendations
Rewarding officers who display more commitment, work longer more unsocial hours, acquire specialist skills, go for promotion and remain fit….
Ah, now I see

BBC didn’t point out that Winsor would have no operational control over the Police.
Given that the Police Federation (and a lot of blogging coppers) seems to spend a lot of time bleating about the shortcomings of their senior officers (sorry management) then one would think that an independent Chief Inspector of Constabulary would be a good idea.
Mind you, probably doesn’t fit the BBC narrative….

I do not agree with the operational control bit. Clearly he has no direct control, but if he can strongly influence tactics and methods he can have a strong indirect effect on operational matters.

Everything needs balanced debate and it wouldn’t suprise me if TODAY didn’t provide it to get at the Government.
That said, Tom Winsor is a disaster waiting to happen. One of his recommendations is fast tracking so that uni grads without any experience of policing (but all the indoctrination in political correctness) lead the Police. There’s already far to big a problem with overeducated, status seeking berks ruining the Police.
Theresa May strikes me as a truly dreadful woman, and how typical of her naffness that she’d do this move but put the kybosh on someithing that really would have done British Policing good, appointing Bill Bratton has Met Chief. Would have preferred Burnside, but Bratton would have been cool.

Not sure I agree with you
Taking your argument to its extreme apparently you believe the only people fit to run the police are time served beat coppers with basic education
A mix is clearly required and if any organisation needs an influx of new thinking it is the police – I do agree that we could do without the indoctrination though
Key is the selection and recruitment process… and a little less of the ‘not invented here’ mindset one sees in the police federation and ACPO
