So the Southern Baptist Convention, the main organization for Baptists in the US, has elected a black man as president. It’s a first, and the Left-wing, hideously white media is so shocked and impressed, even the BBC felt it was worth reporting.

This is because the Southern Baptists have an unsavory legacy of racism. They’ve been moving away from that for quite some time now, but it takes a long time to overcome the ugliness that was in effect as recently as 40 years ago. They also invented Jews for Jesus as an effort to convert Jews.

But blacks and Hispanics are making up an ever larger portion of Evangelicals in the US these days, and the Southern Baptists aren’t stupid. Anybody walking around in Washington Heights or parts of Harlem and the Bronx, for example, will see lots of Baptist or Evangelical little holes in the wall. So they’ve been embracing non-whites for a while now, and have made a big effort to include black people, who until recently have generally had their own churches and organizations for obvious reasons.

Okay, call it tokenism if you want, an attempt to pander and recruit, but this is a growing phenomenon. These people don’t take their religion so lightly as to put just anyone in this high office. But remember: even though the white Southern Baptists accept a black man as their top man, the BBC will tell you that they’re still racist if they don’t vote for a black President.
