The jihad against smokers was only the beginning. Next came the assault on those who enjoy drinking alcohol. Today we see that those who do not exercise are now in the cross-hairs.
A lack of exercise is now causing as many deaths as smoking across the world, a study suggests. The report, published in the Lancet to coincide with the build-up to the Olympics, estimates that about a third of adults are not doing enough physical activity, causing 5.3m deaths a year. That equates to about one in 10 deaths from diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and breast and colon cancer. Researchers said the problem was now so bad it should be treated as a pandemic.
This is the sort of nonsense from the left wing Lancet that the BBC so enjoys repeating. Relax though, the State (and it’s broadcaster) will soon be working out how much exercise you must take. Not sure how they will apply this to the bloated chavs that so concern Owen Jones and the rest of the political left?
Reminiscent of Hitler’s Germany in 1938 – The People’s this, The People’s that – prescribed group PT, cruises, and whatever else the earlier “Big Society” could drum up. The only difference being, of course, the 1938 effort promoted Arianism – no immigration or ethnics there, thank you very much.

PT Cruisers …. ugly cars.

This is the sort of alarmist trash that gets the MSM and the Beeb in a foment. Can’t wait to see what the ‘recommended’ number of steps to take a day are going to be. BTW they haven’t done with us what likes a drink yet either…

BBC recommendations for a healthy life :-
Homosexual activity – at least four times per week.
Rioting and demonstrating – 2/3 times per year.
Shouting at Tories on TV – every day.
NB. Going to the Dole office to collect Benefits every Wednesday was deemed to be too excessive.

You may have thought you were joking Phobic-ist but the BBC used to give lots of publicity to Rosemary Conlan (F-plan diet) and the answer to the number of steps is 10,000 a day

I didn’t see much coverage on the Beeb that most people who stop smoking gain weight – and in the article in their “health” section they made sure that you were still getting the proper message…
“But the health benefits of giving up smoking far outweigh what is still a “modest” gain, say experts”.

Who the hell is Owen Jones? Are you writing for some sort of “in” crowd that knows this name? Does he work for the bbc?

This is the usual statistical game. Britain probably has a higher ratio of fatties because the measurement stick is set lower than in most countries. I wonder if the people who did this survey checked to make sure each country was using the same yardstick?
Add to that the fact that measurement of obesity seems to change year on year and you have the recipe for a putch on the unsightly.
Secondly, as they can no longer blame Jews or Blacks they have started to pick on the fatties. After all being fat is a lifestyle choice for 99% for tubbies so they are seen as fair game.
Blame the fat if the health service can’t feed your mother in hospital.
Blame the porky if your son dies of thirst because the nurses can’t be arsed to give him a drink.
Blame the stout if your wife is dead because a doctor prescribed the wrong drugs.
Just don’t blame the NHS for pouring money down the drain on needless management, PC initiatives, swanky receptions (and grotty wards).
BLAME THE FAT !!!
Pah, Stout and Proud. (and just a little bit bitter)

Fat is no longer PC. You are “easy to see”.

I’m always a little wary of statistics like these, making people do exercise does not stop deaths it just delays them, so are they saying that society would be better if people lived longer and then had to go into long term care? Or is it natural selection at work?
Just asking!

Long term care that they have to pay for by selling their homes and thereby saving the NHS money for more swanky receptions.
Yes, that is part of what they are saying.

Except that quiet a few of the people this applies to are on benefits and don’t have a house to sell.

Also, in this way those miserable people with ‘sick’ genes that cause weakness and dementia in old age won’t be able to pass an inheritance on to their children. Those with ‘healthy’ genes will thrive while those with no house at all – well they can’t be up to much anyway. Nazi eugenics anyone?

We now realise that 1984 was in fact George Orwell’s copy of the BBC staff handbook that he smuggled out when he resigned in 1943…
“The telescreen thrusts Winston out of his dream state with a loud whistle; it’s time to get up. An instructor on the telescreen leads everyone through their morning excercises, known as the Physical Jerks”

I do admit that the bBC does their bit to help with activity. I often throw a slipper at the radio or TV when they spout off their normal drivel.

Oh no! Scientists specialising in public health make suggestion about improving public health!
Will the horror never stop?

Yeah, the government would never try to use something like this to legislate behavior, right? That never happens.

You mean scientists specialising in dodgy statistics and made up numbers. See SHS and reccommended alcohol units for just two examples.
And no the horror won’t ever stop.
Is it too much to ask for journalists to read these press releases with a critical eye and look behinf the numbers?
I’m sure you will say that the same story appears in other papers so it is ok. But they aren’t required by law to be impartial. The BBC should be able to stand back from stories and give a complete picture, but it rarely if ever does. It is as tabloid as The Sun, Mail and Mirror in its journalism, just with posher sounding voices and an increasingly unearned reputation.

You seem very sure that the scientists are “specialising in dodgy statistics and made up numbers”. Yet don’t back that up with any proof.
Which is, of course, how Biased BBC works: everyone you hate needs to be 100% accurate, you can be as vague – or as dishonest – as you like. As long as your own petty little prejudices are kept fed, you’re happy. Just ask David “the BBC wants to abolish marriage” Vance about how happy he is to lie just to feed his own bigotries.

Perhaps if I was paid 3bn a year I could come up with something that would satisfy you. Here are some pointers where I got my information from. No specific links, but you will find what you need on these sites.
numberwatch – pretty much demolishes all such epidemiology and its use of bad and misleading statistics.
Dick Puddlecote, Velvet Glove Iron Fist, and Devil’s Kitchen – all have on them the quote and link to it of one of the people who came up with the alcohol units limit. He admits it was just a made up number with no science to back it up. You will also find links to SHS studies where you can see the feeble justification they use to try and find it is a problem. The RR and confidence levels are so low in most studies that they are indistinguishable from random events.
I’m sure you will dismiss these sites as right wing nazis or whatever, but there you will find the side of the story that Auntie never tells or never even acknowledge exists.
And for the record I don’t hate anybody, but I do resent people who try and tell me what to do. Which is what the anti- alcohol, salt tobacco fat people want to do. And frankly they can all fuck right off.
This report is one more step by these people towards the legislation they crave. Is that what you want? Don’t you think the BBC should be asking these people some searching questions in order to better inform the people who pay for them?
I don’t want the BBC to be right wing. I want it to treat everybody in power or with pretensions to power as a lying scumbag and potential dictator. That way they might ask the questions that should be asked of all these people.

Cameras can be installed in every home and garden to measure inactivity and fines for excessive inaction. Its based on sceince innit? How about Orwellian Mini-Fit inspectors to supervise our morning jog through the streets? We cannot allow people to decide how to exercise or enjoy themselves, can we?

You could of course say that smoking is no more harmful than an evening watching Television. That is what the statistics say.

I suppose that it goes without saying that the ridiculous amount of sports coverage is probably linked to the rise in obesity.
Stands to reason that a nation of lardarses would much rather follow the BBC to the Euros, the Olympics, the World Cups etc-rather than actually participate in any sport themselves.
Now if all sport was made illegal on the telly-I myself would think that the nations “self-esteem” and its “amount of exercise” would go up correspondingly.
Yes folks-it goes without saying-which is why the BBC won`t say it…wouldn`t want to lose those jollies around the world, and that lovely sponsorship backwash now would we?
Where the hell else would a Gary Richardson get a job anyway?

There are thousands of people who are injured, even killed, doing sport every year. Do we now ban climbing? (Think of the recent tragedy at Chamonix.)
A handful of footballers around the world have died in recent years, all self-inflicted of course. Where’s the BBC campaign against these killer activites?
Motor racing? Ban it as it is in Switzerland.
People get killed in cars and buses too. Ban them! (Of course that is one of the wet dreams of the Beeboid “Environmental” lobby anyway.)
