In his brief remarks Mr. Panetta said, “Today I am very pleased to announce that President Obama will nominate General David Rodriguez to succeed General Carter Ham as commander of U.S. Africa Command.” This came as a surprise to many, since General Ham had only been in the position for a year and a half.
So General Ham who the bBC quotes as saying the bad treatment of terrorists in Mali is all the fault of the US. Leaves out he was sacked in Nov by the Obama administration in order to allow Obama and Clinton to save face. So really this is Gen Ham’s way of sticking the boot in.

Iran’s Evin prison: Jail or ‘hotel’?
On Monday, a group of Iranian MPs who visited the notorious Evin prison described Iran’s biggest jail for political prisoners as a “hotel”. “From now on, I will call it Hotel Evin, rather than Evin prison,” one of them, Safar Naeimi, said after his six-hour tour of the complex in the capital, Tehran.But in recent years, many prisoners of conscience, who were mostly arrested after the post-election protests of 2009, have complained about their conditions in Evin.
So the bBC reports about the fantastic treatment afforded to its prisoners (In stark contrast to US/UK and Israeli prison conditions) I quote from the bold side quote inserted into the article:

Mohammadreza Mohseni-Sani, one of the four visiting MPs, said prisoners “had no complaints regarding security, health, nutrition and the facilities provided at the prison”. Mr Naeimi said the prison’s hospital was of the highest quality, while the kitchen served good food and offered a diverse menu.
In fact the bBC points out that the only complaints are about the food, that some people get placed in solitary confinement for being disruptive:
The outspoken daughter of the former president was put in solitary confinement last month and was barred from any visits for “disrupting prison order”, because she had protested against the situation in the women’s ward.
So all in all the bBC promotes this view that Iranian prisons run under Sharia law are a lot better run than Western prisons.

Fox News now has a report about Evin Prison that’s pretty much the opposite of the story the BBC pushed. Yes, it’s Fox News, and I’m citing it deliberately not so much to prove the BBC wrong as to show that, since Fox News is supposed to be Right Wing, then the opposite side must be the Left.

So, last night’s Question Time was a risible put-up job by the usual suspects, pretty much as expected. The question of Europe was lamentably ‘debated’ by this collection of sages and all could congratulate themselves on pretty much ‘agreeing Britain should stay in the EU’, no matter what Cameron (or the British people) might think about the matter. Dimbledore even saw fit to whisper to camera that in the panel’s view Cameron shouldn’t even be raising the issue of Europe now as there were ‘much more important things’ for government to be doing.
Really, BBC? Have you now so little fear of your critics that you feel you can propagandize quite so brazenly, quite so explicitly? This was shameful broadcasting – clearly entirely biased (the audience, as usual, stuffed to the rafters with pig-ignorant socialists bores who took to booing the panel’s Tory MP whenever she spoke) and designed, from the start, to message in one direction only.
The situation was further compounded when, within moments of This Week starting, the fatuous presenter, Andrew Neil, immediately took to describing UKIP as a ‘bunch of fruit and nut cases’.
This is where we are with the BBC’s definition of ‘unbiased’ ‘informed’ and ‘educational’ political journalism. It’s a complete disgrace. When will someone – anyone, please – in a position of power take them to task..?
You’re right about QT but I think you’ll find Andrew Neil’s comment was intended as a comic/ironic attack on those now arguing for an EU referendum having only recently dismissed those in favour as fruitcakes and nutcases. I have absolutely no problem with Andrew Neil. He’s an excellent jounalist who can be relied on to grill whichever politician is put in front of him – regardless of party. I wish the same could be said any other BBC journalist. If there were more like Andrew Neil this site wouldn’t be needed.

A model of balance, where UKIP were equally targeted for ridicule by each of the panelists, on equally fatuous grounds such as the pronunciation of the name “Farage”, a man who incidentally was characterised as a modern day Uri Geller.
I agree Andrew Neil does the job of a political interviewer as it should be done. If ALL BBC staff kept their own views out of things and were as impartial I would be less convinced of the need to get rid of the BBC.
But even if they did emulate Neil I can’t see how it can be healthy for the country to have so much of the news and current affairs broadcasting in the hands of one organisation. It seems self evident that in order to get a balanced view we need to have plenty of variety in where we get our news from. The BBC has far too many channels and ways of providing information to the public. It needs to cut down to size by a) closing it down entirely or b) massively reducing the License fee and so limiting what it can do and leaving space for others to fill.
The problem is, the bias isn’t confined to news and current affairs – the whole programming schedule is impregnated with a Leftist world view.
They are afraid that the EU gravy train will come to an end.
Like the political elite in Norway and Switzerland, that would only leave the United Nations gravy train for failed politicians.
But the Tories still need to dispose of Cameron if they are to have any hope of winning the next election. If not the Tories, anyone please.
I am not sure if I have posted this before but I have a theory about the audience in QT. The number of them dressed in ‘Labour’ red. I am never disappointed (not sure that is the right turn of phrase) that those in red, such as the young lady with the red dress and the very red lipstick last night, come out with the most leftist views. Either they have been told to wear red for Dumbledore to readily identify them and their political views or they are so in love with their political party they feel they have to wear its colour.

I suggest that we all send our thoughts to Feedback on this topic and see if any of our views make onto the airwaves.

My mistake was accepting the information on these other sites, although I did cross check the information – didn’t just take it a gospel from just one site.
However, that voter fraud is an accepted practice in US elections has been exposed by a Democrat senator’s son, who, I think was employed as their equivalent of a local government councillor. He was caught on covert camera agreeing to help to engineer voter fraud in his local district, when approached by two undercover reporters. He eventually resigned his position. Can’t remember this bloke’s name but I’m sure Dave Preiser could provide it.

I must apologize to you, Scott, because I missed your response to me on that thread. So, let me explain now. I misspoke, and should have said “less than the first time”, or something like that. I realize this slip-up is unacceptable, and am very flattered that you hold me to a higher standard than you do the BBC. So let’s clear the matter up once and for all. It’s not the number of votes each received in comparison to the other, but in comparison to themselves:
In 2004, Bush became the first sitting president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1936 to win reelection while adding to majorities in both the House and the Senate.
This was why his mandate was perceived as being so strong leading some to think that this might have been a realigning election whereby the Party that achieved such an historical feat would rule the country for years to come.
By contrast, Obama’s Party though holding the Senate failed in its attempt to take control of the House of Representatives in 2012.
Beyond this, Bush got 11.5 million more popular votes and 15 more electoral votes in 2004 than he received in 2000.
Obama received 7.5 million fewer popular votes and 32 fewer electoral votes in 2012 than he received in 2008.
Add it all up and 2004 was a far better election result for Bush than 2000 while 2012 was a far worse result for Obama than 2008.
Let me repeat, Scott: You may have gotten your own figures correct, but you got the concept wrong. I’ll accept that I screwed up the wording which led you to draw your conclusion. I’m pretty sure I stated this more clearly elsewhere. In fact, here’s me getting it right in a post complaining about Mardell declaring just such a mandate, which I assume you never read. But that doesn’t make up for my slip-up here. I hope it’s clear enough to everyone now, though.

A few weeks ago, one of the regulars here bemoaned the fact of the very existence of this blog. He implied it was all a waste of time. After a period of reflection, I will quote Townhall columnist Laura Hollis, who penned a great piece about the last US Presidential election in which she speaks to the subject of the media. (I will give you a link at the end though most of it does not concern us here).
One of the points is headlined: “The Corrupt Media is the enemy”. This is a strong statement and she backs it up with this:
“I have been watching the media try to throw elections since at least the early 1990s. In 2008 and again this year, we saw the media cravenly cover up for the incompetence and deceit of this President, while demonizing a good, honorable and decent man with lies and smears. This is on top of the daily barrage of insults that conservatives (and by that I mean the electorate, not the politicians) must endure at the hands of this arrogant bunch of elitist snobs. Bias is one thing. What we observed with Benghazi was professional malpractice and fraud. They need to go. Republicans, Libertarians and other conservatives need to be prepared to play hardball with the Pravda press from here on out. And while we are at it, to defend those journalists of whatever political stripe (Jake Tapper, Sharyl Atkisson, Eli Lake) who actually do their jobs. As well as FoxNews and talk radio. Because you can fully expect a re-elected Obama to try to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine in term 2.”
The fairness doctrine, by the way, is the muzzling of opponents like the people on US conservative talk radio. As the UK has nothing approaching talk radio, though many have tried, we can skip that part of the argument.
However, the accusation of “professional malpractice and fraud” is well taken as is her solution: “Republicans, Libertarians and other conservatives need to be prepared to play hardball with the Pravda press from here on out.”
I look forward to how “playing hardball” will be exercised in practice.

Have to give credit to the Today producers this morning for allowing time to acknowledge the Holocaust and dare to suggest that it’s still worth remembering. BBC One produced a documentary about one survivor’s story, and this was essentially a promo spot for it. The BBC is so deathly afraid of being accused of being pro-Israel and controlled by the Jews that they surely must have had a difficult decision to do this.
They’ll surely be inundated with the usual complaints, and somebody is going to have to spend time responding to them. It’s nice to see that the BBC’s visceral hatred of Israel doesn’t always extend to offering succor to anti-Semitism. It seems there are still a few Beeboids with a moral compass left after all.

They will also probably selectively dumb down the questions for the “politically correct token celebrity person” per episode, next year.

Ireland to build ‘giant’ wind turbines to power UK homes
UK and Irish ministers will today sign an agreement that could see some of the world’s largest wind turbines built across the Irish midlands. Stretching more than 600 feet (180 metres) in the air, the towers are set to generate energy for millions of UK homes from 2017. The companies involved say the Irish power is a cheaper form of renewable than UK offshore wind.
So the bBC reports about power companies are going to plant Wind Towers in Southern Ireland in which to supply the British. Ah but hang on what is stronger than Green credentials at the bBC, why hating the people who fund their lavish ways which is why the bBC comes out with the following:
“But environmentalists have described the scheme as “crazy”. They say it risks damaging Ireland’s landscape.”
And
“But opponents say that local people have not been consulted and few actually realise just what an impact the turbines will have on the landscape. “People don’t actually understand the scale of them,” said Andrew Duncan, an auctioneer and spokesman for the Lakelands Wind Information group, who are opposed to the plan.”Putting up the largest turbines in the world without consultation – I think it is ludicrous, to be honest.”

What happened was this. Professor Beard was invited to take part on the BBC’s Question Time programme, where she made what can be politely described as an utter fool of herself. I run a small, light-hearted competition every year on my blog for people to vote for the most stupid woman to have appeared on Question Time in the past 12 months. It is but the third week of January and Mary is already a shoo-in, I fear, unless they ask Lynne Featherstone — the Manchester United, nay the Barcelona, of this particular award — back on to the show.
Anyway, having performed with stumbling vapidity in her earlier answers, she turned to the question of immigration and the influx of Bulgarians and Romanians we are all looking forward to welcoming to our shores next January. Mary managed to appear smug, patrician and fabulously ill-informed in her answer, which was to the effect that a study in Lincolnshire had suggested that immigration had caused nary a problem at all but had added immeasurably to the rich diversity of the area — and so, she concluded, there would be no problems at all from this next wave.

The BBC made a big deal of yesterday’s growth figures, without apparently stopping to consider whether GDP actually means much.
When governments splash the cash about, GDP is higher. For example, if the government decides to increase legal funding for asylum seekers, that will do naff all for the British economy, but will increase the GDP figure.
A GDP decrease can be a sign that the government is starting to take measures needed to bring down the national debt, but you won’t hear that from the BBC!

I heard a trailer for a reading of Animal Farm on R4. The book was introduced as a novel ‘about the corrupting influence of power’ (from memory).
Now it’s a while since I read it, but I seem to recall it was more a critique of socialism than anything else; indeed, I had a discussion with my (socialist) English teacher about it.
Funny how the BBC didn’t pick up on that.
It’s more a critique of Soviet communism – Orwell had had direct experience Stalinist communists in Spain. He was, however, always a democratic socialist.

I enjoyed two or three minutes of the Today programme this morning, and it’s not often you hear that said on this site. The prime 8.10 slot, normally lasting 10 minutes and given to the most important news of the day, had John Humphrys on the subject of the man who last night tried to rob a Plymouth betting shop, wearing a gas-mask and carrying a pistol, but was overpowered by customers and subsequently died. Humphrys interviewed the QC who acted as the defence counsel for Tony Martin, imprisoned for killing a burglar in 1999, who said “a man walks into a betting shop, he gambles and loses; there’s no story”. Humphrys tries to pursue it and turn it into a ‘human rights for criminals’ case, but the lawyer is having nothing of it, and the item ends after just 3 minutes.
I loved the notion of ‘restraint’ in this context.
Mind you, looking at some of the locals haunting our local bookie simply sitting on the guy would be game over.

Yet another illegal immigrant advocacy piece from the BBC. At least this time they mention the word “illegal”. But the whole thing is told from the perspective, and using the language of amnesty advocates.
The title says “Undocumented immigrants”, which is the language of the amnesty advocates, one side of the debate. Then the blurb accompanying the piece frames it as US law being responsible for people acting illegally. The term “immigration reform” is also the language – and goal – of the advocates. This is an entirely one-sided piece, just like all other BBC output about illegal immigration in the US.
Regardless of which side of the issue one is on, the BBC should remain impartial. What you have here is a propaganda piece for a political cause, produced at your expense. When they use the language and speak from the perspective of one side only, it’s bias.
The biggest problem of all is that this isn’t even really intended to convince you of anything. It’s aimed at a US audience, with an eye towards influencing public opinion. The BBC is a foreign enemy in my country now. Paid for in large part by your license fee.

The BBC actually reported the President’s defeat in the courts over His illegal attempt to circumvent the Senate on appointing His cronies. Naturally, the bulk of the piece is the White House side of the story, with a single line from Rep. Boehner – and nobody from the Senate – about how the court’s decision is a victory for the separation of powers. The BBC also makes sure to get a mention that the judges were “conservative” in among the White House talking points. In case you thought the decision might be legitimate, right, BBC?
A little more actual background as to the realities of the separation of powers and the reason the rule preventing the President from making unchecked political appointments would have been nice. Of course, key background is only thought necessary by the BBC when it supports their agenda. In this case, it doesn’t help much at all and might detract from the statements of Katty Kay’s personal friend and husband of her business partner. It’s especially important because this second term is going to see the President do everything possible to skirt Congress and Have his minions implement regulations and schemes in place of laws. These appointments are just the tip of iceberg. Not that you’d know any of this from the BBC. To them, only extremists and crypto-racists have any objection to the way He governs.
I suppose I should just be happy that the BBC didn’t call the judges racist.
Funny how Hugh Sykes can claim that personal opinions don’t preclude professional balance, but the BBC is very much suggesting that’s false when they point out the political leanings of judges. I, for one, do not believe that BBC journalists are any more likely to remain impartial than a US Circuit Judge. In fact, since judges are much more likely to be held accountable, I’d say the reverse is true.

This is disturbing news indeed, as it’s an article of faith amongst a familiar breed of professional Northerner (e.g. John Les Prescott, Esq.) that we down here on the Cote de Douvres live lives of heady sybarism in temperatures that never drop below a chilly 70F or so, whilst their own wind-blasted habitations on the tundra only rise above freezing for about 5 minutes in mid-July (just prior to the onset of the 10 month winter beginning in t’ first week in August).

As mentioned before, Ted “Should’ve Been Strung Up By The Nuts” Heath was one of my fellow Men Of Kent, but fortunately he’s shuffled off and the shame of association will swiftly fade. Lord Lard Arse, on the other hand, lives on. Forever !

I wish he was a Kentish Man (two words), as those of us blessed to be born on the other side of the Medway have been pleased to look down on them ever since the day they couldn’t be arsed to turn up at the “Let’s Threaten William The Bastard” shindy at Swanscombe (on their own side of the river no less), and Heath would fit right in with their number.
Sadly, the git was born at Broadstairs so he was one of us.

I read the article. Hands will be wrung but it will be ignored.
You do not have to be a genius to have predicted this although the figures do surprise me. i had thought the white flight to have been a bit less.
I have written about this before a few times. The key is in the children and the need to go comes when the child is around 11.
This is the most serious social problem of our time and what do we have- a governing class obssessing over “gay marriage”
The fools do not see what is happening. London and other cities are soon to be abandoned. The crunch will come when the indigenous people no longer have a place to run to.
This is what happens and what has happened endlessly in this world. It is the way of things and of peoples.

We know why people are unwilling to say it, but that is beginning to change. Witness Question Time recently, much to the disgust of those who have deliberately created the atmosphere in which people have been reluctant to speak up for so long.
And I always thought that people enjoyed living in our **vibrant** cities !
More seriously, this voluntary flight could result in fewer marginal seats, and an ever-growing base of diehard safe Labour ones.
How long before the inbbc gets somone on screen to tell us it’s kicking off everywhere in Egypt.
What could possibly be going wrong in that wonderful democratic country?
Good thing the President made that video in Cairo, right? His diplomacy is going so well that we’re now sending Morsi a bunch of fighter jets.
The Muslem Brotherhood has been anti American since the 1950s when Sayyid Qutb returned condemning America, its its materialism, individual freedoms, economic system, racism, brutal boxing matches, “poor” haircuts, superficiality in conversations and friendships, restrictions on divorce, enthusiasm for sports, lack of artistic feeling, “animal-like” mixing of the sexes (which “went on even in churches”), and strong support for the new Israeli state.
I don’t think an obsequious speech or even billions of aid will change that.
