Melvyn Bragg has the decency to be seemingly embarrassed during this programme, presumably forced upon him….yet another global warming ‘persuader’ moulded to bring us into the fold….it was always clear where it was going to end up…and sure as snowballs will melt in the burning hell of a CO2 polluted world the final words were ‘We’re doomed’.
Having said that listen to the programme and I doubt you will be at all convinced by it that global warming is a man made threat….never mind Bragg saying that warming benefitted mankind…but ‘we’d better park that idea.‘ Why? Wasn’t it in the script?
There clearly was a script..not just the usual one to guide the drift of a debate to search into all corners of a subject…this one was definitely heading in one direction only…however not even the guests seemed convinced.
For instance they kept revealing information that seemed at odds with the global warming story….the history of the earth is that for only 15% of its existence has it been covered in ice…the other 85% it has been in a ‘Greenhouse’ state.
We were told that the Antarctic became frozen as the continents drifted away from it and the vast expanse of sea meant that it became colder…..the narrative of that was interrupted by a second guest who said ‘Remember that CO2 is driving this of course’…..‘Oh yes‘ said the narrator, ‘CO2 of course…yes it drives this’.
Convincing? Not at all. Was someone off script?
What else? Oh yes…CO2 levels have been 12 times higher than at present and the greenhouse state is the normal one for the planet.
At the end of the programme the BBC, after 40 or so minutes of interesting stuff about ice ages, decides that’s enough of that….whatever you the listener has concluded yourself you’re going to be given the summary of what you really should be thinking…whether it really embodies the content of the programme or not….and of course that conclusion is…‘We’re doomed’.
Despite my scepticism, about the BBC motive, it’s very worth a listen in its own right if you have the time.
There is no such thing as global warming. It is a BBC conspiracy.

Pills? Is that how you managed to sleep through the ’28gate’ debacle?
Still if you keep your head under the pillows long enough the boggyman might go away to.

Where’s my tablets…
After taking your tablets for paranoia you may now be able to understand that the “BBC conspiracy” was caused by the paranoia, and that instead the BBC staff now seem to be just thickos who vote the same way as people in inner-city shit holes.
Also the paranoia caused the thought “There is no such thing as global warming”. This was caused by a confused paranoid misunderstanding of the fact that the historical records show that Global Warming is followed by Global Cooling and visa-versa. Also as Global Warming ended 16 years ago, you are now aware that we are now in a process of change towards a Global Cooling.
But you must keep taking the tablets, otherwise you may start to hate everyone that you fell inferior too, as this may be true, this will make you vote Labour.

I enjoy IOT. I download and save every episode. It is the sort of quality programme that I would pay for if the BBC went to subscription.

Have to agree, IOT is the only Radio 4 programme I listen to regularly. Melvin Bragg has a wicked sense of humour when he winds up his guests from academia.

Your only problem there, Colditz is that you didn’t use enough words.
More accurate than your attempted depiction of sceptics is the following :
“Of course there is such a thing as Global warming (and Cooling), but there’s absolutely no definitive proof of the existence of Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming….despite the conspiracy of the BBC with those who would tell you otherwise.”
As for your meds… I wouldn’t lower myself to comment on that aspect of your post.

And while you’re at it, Colditz, have a go at explaining the lack of positive feedback climate modellers had been pinning their hopes on for a catastrophic rise in temperatures.
Join the debate properly, lad, if you want to be taken seriously.

In the pursuit of a formula for feedback, it was established that the feedback was negative not positive.
So not only does the old idea of the Greenhouse effect not work for Venus, but it now does not work for the Earth either.
No matter, we now have the Unified Theory of Climate, and that was founded on an amazing coincidence between the temperature on Venus and the Earth at one bar pressure.

Don’t expect to see this news report on the BBBC – funny how they never mention Antartica, which after all is 50% of the Poles on earth! – Of course they would if it was shrinking!

Had they done a little research, they might have found this:

Antarctica holds 90% of the earth’s ice and 70% of the earth’s freshwater ice and has been slowly growing.
Pity the BBC chooses to focus all its attention on the minority Arctic ice. But then, that’s the BBC for you, always fighting the minorities’ corner.

Melvin Bragg, a man who can take really interesting subjects and make them boring as hell. Just as a guest is getting into something interesting, he cut in with his boring voice and ruins it.

Hmm, I posted about this programme in the last Open Thread, and was taken unmercifully to task by one Dr. Foster…

I don’t think anyone denies that climate changes. However the question arises: will man-made increased CO2 increase EITHER the rate of increase in temperature (if it is going to increase) OR the final temperature (and if so by how much). Data from the Met office shows a catastrophic cooling in UK temperatures in January 2013 compare with the mean (1980-2010) and if this continues at the same rate for 20 years we are going to be under hundreds of feet of glaciers.

I was quite hopeful about this program when it started with all agreeing that we are currently in an ice age and that it will be over when the poles have become ice-free and that this is normal and has happened many times in the past.
Then suddenly at the end of the show one of the women decided to start preaching the usual AGW claptrap.
How depressing but also unsurprising.
