When it comes to the ongoing friction between Spain and Gibraltar, and in particular the current bully boy tactics used by the Spanish Government to inconvenience Gibraltarians crossing the border, it will be interesting to see the BBC approach. I thought this was a pretty fair commentary on it but am aware that Today are covering it later this morning and one can’t help but feel rather in the Argentina/Falklands situation, BBC sympathies must lie with the Spanish bullies.

If there is any serious discussion about Gibraltar on the BBC, it should include reference to Ceuta and Melilla, the Spanish analogues to Gibraltar on the coast of Morocco.

Ian, agreed, plus the Canary Islands which are off the south Moroccan coast. When they have given all these back to Morocco we may then start discussing the future of Gibraltar as long as the Gibraltarians have the last say in their future.

not sure the Canaries were ever part of what is now Morocco or Western Sahara…

But they are nowhere near Spain.

If we’re rolling back the clock to return lands to their previous ownership then certain South American countries should be given back to the surviving descendants of the indigenous indian population as well.
Although not the Falklands because they were uninhabited before settlement.
Presumably Spain would be obligated to give the millions of refugees from those South American countries a home. That might be difficult in our straitened times.

Well said, DV! And isn’t it strange how the ‘guarantor of peace since WWII’. the EU, is never mentioned in conjunction with Spain’s arrogance?
If the BBC’s beloved organisation will not stir itself to force Spain to play by the rules, just what is the point of it?

As you say..where is the EU then?
I imagine hoping that it would flare up, and show that only an EU Federation of Loving Regions could bring peace-these nasty individual countries are always going to squabble after all.
Hope the Gibraltarians take their revenge on the Spanish…if they don`t, the Spaniards will only see it as typical British cravenness.
The BBC will of course back Spain-for it`s not Britain, and likelier to be socialist.
“Spanish is the Loving Tongue”(Joan Baez hippie crap)..Che, Fidel, Hugo, Sandinistas, Mexicali cartels and those lovely drugs?…the Spanish are SO cool!…no wonder the BBC will support them…oh, and yet another chance to dig up Thatch`s ashes to roll your Rizlas in.
That`s our BBC these days.

The subtitles on this piece just came up with ‘injuring Jews’ for ‘ enduring jams’.
Even the subtitles can’t avoid a bit of bias …
