You can almost sense the desperation and despair dripping from this BBC News page – as the BBC had to report that a respected think-tank is of the opinion that the UK, scheduled to become Europe’s ‘Largest’ Economy on current politico-economic trajectories, would be better off out of the European Union.
Or at least that’s what one would assume. Even in reporting this, however, the BBC cannot help emphasising some things over others. The first sentences in the article – and clauses in summarising sentences – regard the “UK’s population growth”. The CEBR report (which I urge everyone to read: http://www.cebr.com/reports/cebr-world-economic-league-table/), however, cites population growth as one of many factors, and not even as the most important. (The most important factor cited are supply-side policies that support long-term growth, such as low taxes and the freedom to trade outside of Europe).
The over-emphasis on demographic dynamics aside (which of course means calling for a more relaxed immigration policy); the BBC cannot bring itself to admit what the results of a paper such as this mean. It means that the UK should consider leaving the European Union, and that the UK should lower tax-rates across the board – things that the BBC would never publish articles in favour of.

The size of any economy has no bearing on the wealth of the population , Nigeria’s economy is many times larger than that of Switzerland need one say more?
The argument which Labour and its poodle leftist university ‘research’ uses is that immigration is good for GDP. Yes, it might well be, marginally, but as the contrast between Nigeria and Switzerland shows, the more people you crowd into the UK the more the (much more important) GDP per capita becomes, particularly as immigrants are not NET contributors when schooling and the cost of the NHS are added to in-work benefits and, eg, housing need and HB.
Pete, they are lying to you – as long as there is local unemployment, every employed immigrant means another local on the dole, and every unemployed immigrant is on the dole himself, so there is no way!!
The CEBR predicts that Germany will lose its current top spot in Europe by 2030. It cites the UK’s population growth as an aid to economic acceleration.
What rubbish. Most of the population growth in the UK is due to immigrants from Africa and Asia. Most of these come from an impoverished background, uneducated and poor in skills. Their children are not likely to be any better, as their home environment and culture, is unlikely to support or encourage excellence.
What we will get is the largest population in the EU but also the poorest. The UK is also quite likely to be racked, with Islamic insurgency, or as the BBC would put it – “restive”.
As for beating Germany – wishful thinking. Germany is the only real industrial superpower left in the world. Unlike the UK and the USA, it did not outsource its manufacturing to China. Thus, German technicians have continued to get better in their skills, and have passed them on to their apprentices – something we used to have, but in a fit of irrationality, got rid of the lot.
Though China will overtake Germany in total GDP, it will still be dependent on Germany to provide new products to make cheaply.
Exactly. Mass immigration has and continues to damage this country. The influx of cheap labour means employers don’t have to invest to increase productivity so we become less competitive. It also means that wage rates are low so we have some people who opt for a life on benefits rather than work. It places great strain on our services and on our housing stock. It also means that our culture is being eroded.
Yet despite all the above the liberal left and their megaphone mouthpiece the BBC tells us we should welcome immigrants by the plane load. They must be mad. Why can’t we say what we think about immigration. Of the people I know, I reckon that 9 out of 10 are against it. But of course they are not from the liberal left elite who now run the country and the BBC.
Oh, I’m sorry, but didn’t someone mention something about massive Third World immigration over forty years ago? Seems I recall hearing some chap who had the ill-grace to be on about that, but then they silenced him. I wonder, whatever became of that man, anyhow?

Correct. Switzerland has no ruling elite. The Swiss are the masters of all policies, at all levels – federal, cantonal, and down to the parish level.
