Can’t recall who or where, but grateful to whoever shared this, which I bookmarked and has been running on audio during tea breaks:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/democracylive/house-of-commons-25732284
My attention was captured by an exchange at around 35′ to 39′ in, between two avowed Beebophiles, Lib Dem MP John Leech and David Elstein.
The latter claims the BBCphilia but is a passionate advocate of voluntary subscription. The MP was perplexed, as I imagine any would be who like guaranteed money deals no matter what, and may secretly be less sure of the value of their offering if subject to market forces.
However, this quote resonated, given some wondering, Mrs. Merton-style, what it is about the all powerful state medium that those in government like so much.
‘ Ministers now have a vested interest in maintaining the licence fee, as so much is paid for from it’
If true, and none there appeared to argue, the elephant of interest conflict in that room was pretty noticeable by no one bar Mr. Elstein acknowledging it.

At two and a half hours it’s a bit of an epic, but before popping it back on the favourites shelf for another time, a follow-up exchange was interesting, with the notion getting promoted that ‘quality’ from outside the BBC was being promoted by that from within the BBC. Literally, Game of Thrones would not happen without Sherlock inspiring programme makers.
I found that a stretch. On more than one count. There is a ton of great stuff on offer outside of the BBC, and people are finding and opting for it (having paid the BBC tithe first). And I am unsure £4Bpa is a great deal to get, as all they seem capable of referencing, Sherlock. Oddly Dr. Who was left out, as was Top Gear, but Strictly was (if whispered, as all realised that, popular it may be, ‘great’ TV it is not). Trying to shoehorn a few high-profile hours’ worth a month into some ‘creative catalyst’ magic brew that the loss of the BBC would devastate is hard to credit.

Big headlines all over the BBC today THIS IS THE WETTEST WINTER SINCE RECORDS BEGAN.

and there may be a grain of truth in that if you live in the soft South of England, however North of a line stretching from North Wales to Essex, you’ve probably had an average amount, or in come regions less than average. Especially Merseyside, where I expect they nicked it as it was falling !

So part of country gets more than its fair share, after years of moaning about not having enough, and the London centric media thinks the sky is falling !

The fact that the vast majority of the country has had a close to average amount can be completely ignored in the quest for yet another global warming/cooling/staying the same tragedy.

Just because a part of the UK which the BBC execs find massively important gets too much rain it’s a sign the whole earth is flooding !

There used to be a time when BBC bias showed its ugly face 2 or 3 times a week. The BBC’s growing political activism and its seeming untouchabilty has seen that bias grow to be endemic.

And often the message is subliminal. You might want to ask if the BBC, an outrageously a publicly funded leader of the anti Murdoch coalition, let its position on News International contaminate its coverage of the Brooks trial today.

Describing Brooks’ acquittal on one charge, the BBC News said that this was because there was ‘insufficient evidence’. Every other broadcaster and newspaper has repeated the Judge’s words, …a verdict of “not guilty” had to be returned for Brooks…”I have decided that THERE IS NO CASE FOR MS BROOKS TO ANSWER…’ Presentationally somewhat different, I’d say.

And, charting Brooks’ journey to the top, the BBC told us of her contacts with Prime MinisterS. Guess which one they showed her with? As a clue it’s not the one who friendship was disclosed only yesterday and who we learned was her unofficial adviser.

The BBC quite simply cannot be trusted.

Why is it that BBC news are so anxious to trumpet these dubious ‘record’ weather statistic such as ‘wettist winter since…’?

Is Team GB up for a gold medal in weather – or could it be that an agenda is at play?

Seriously, these are not the Last Days. There is no impending weather apocalypse just round the corner – not in the Thames Flood Plain, not even on the Somerset Levels.

Meanwhile consider this level of dumbing down : BBC News Channel this morning (I paraphrase slightly) ‘Hey weather girl, you’re Scottish, did you watch the curling’.

Richard Anderson, a BBC business reporter, gives readers of the BBC website background on all you need to know about UK debt and deficit. In the part on government borrowing Anderson slips in this little passage:
    .
“If the government is running a deficit, it may make investments on top of this, and will therefore need to borrow to cover both.
For example, in the calendar year 2007, the Labour government borrowed £37.7bn, of which £28.3bn was invested in big projects (the balance of £9.4bn represents the current budget deficit). Conversely, in 2012, the Conservative-led coalition borrowed £93.2bn, with just £50m (yes, that’s million) invested.
A neat, if rather simplistic, illustration of the different philosophies of the right and left in UK politics, some might say [my bold]”.
    .
Unfortunately, apart from linkages to the NSO and OBR websites, Anderson tells us no more about these figures. For all I know they illustrate something important. I suspect, however, that they are figures capable of differing interpretations plucked from the statistics to support a blatantly partisan statement about a contrast between caring and prudent Labour (investing in the economy, no less) and the uncaring and imprudent “Conservative-led” coalition.
However, if the contrast claimed by Anderson is indeed evidenced by the published statistics, further background should be given together with an exact reference to the part of the published figures on which Anderson bases his assertions. In this way the “little people” can check Anderson’s sources and make their own minds up as to whether or not the figures support Anderson’s conclusions. IMHO the absence of such exact references plus the use of the BBC’s favourite weasel phrase “some might say” argues against the unequivocal conclusion reached by Anderson.

It’s blatantly biased and coy misrepresentation … ‘some might say’!

To see how wrong this comparison is, look at the net borrowing graph at the bottom of the article. The 2007 figure is taken at the height of a boom when the ‘left’s’ budget should have been in surplus and the 2012 figure taken when the ‘right’ were starting to repay debt that peaked the year before they came into power at over £150bn. As the ‘left’s’ finance minister said when the ‘right’ took over, ‘there’s no money left’ so it’s hardly a surprise that the ‘right’ decided they could not carry on spending / ‘investing’ at previous levels and service the inherited debt.

Breath taking cherry picking of figures and biased interpretation by the BBC!!

      • T22 says:

This article under a BBC link called ‘Deficit delusions: the truth about the UK’s borrowing and debt’ is beginning to look very silly after the author amended his figure later in the day to increase Conservative spending from £50m to £23.7bn!!

        … ‘Conversely, in 2013, the Conservative-led coalition borrowed £91.5bn, with just £23.7bn invested. ‘ ….

Oh well … what’s more than £23bn to a journalist without a grasp of the facts and a biased agenda to peddle. Mr Anderson doesn’t seem up to his job, ‘some might say’.

The Roma would like to thank the BBC for withholding that part of the Judge’s words in the recent Peterborough sex gang case that refered to their community.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-25679982

Although the BBC selected this quote ‘Judge John Bevan QC said: “Because some of the defendants do not speak good enough English, despite having lived here a long time, three interpreters have worked full time during this case, at a cost of over £30,000.”‘

The BBC carefully omitted to report these words : ‘Judge Bevan told the five gang members: ‘The combination of the crimes you have committed and your attitude to these crimes both in this country and this court bring discredit on all of you in the dock and does a disservice to your fellow Roma…’

    As reported here….

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2563966/They-said-theyd-kill-I-told-police-Victims-speak-terror-Roma-child-sex-gang-preyed-girls-young-12-jailed-54-years.html

The Roma are pleased that the 70-80% of the UK population who received their main news from the BBC will have been shielded from a full report of the Judge’s words in this case.

Indeed the Roma and certain other groups will be pleased that on this subject of censorship-for-the-sake-of-communty-cohesion the BBC are unilaterally enforcing the wishes of certain left-wing commentators expressed in evidence to the inquiry led by Brian Leveson last year.

BBC : The News filtered by the Left, broadcast to the masses, approved by Leveson.

BBC : All the News, well, that is that part of the news that seems to us to be in the interests of Community Cohesion.
