THE RETURN OF THE QUESTION TIME CHAT?

The BiasedBBC Question Time Chat may be returning!

Some excellent work by our very own Julio has produced software which seems suitable. We’ve tested it behind the scenes and now it’s time for the Public Beta trials.

You can find it here.

We would be very grateful if you could take a look. Leave any feedback in the Comments themselves and we will read them. At certain times today we’ll be replying to them real-time in the chat too.

There’s a Registration link on that page which you will need to use first. Standard disclaimers apply … we don’t know, care, check, remember or outright give a rat’s scrotum about your registration details.

Please give it a go and let us know what you think!

I must be doing something wrong as I’ve registered but cannot see anything else.

seems to work for me. Maybe we (everyone) should arrange a meet up time there?

Demon: did you log in to the chat page?

    • Demon says:

Julio, I can’t see a chat page. When I click on the “here” link I just get the registration page which I’ve already completed.

That would be a good idea flexdream, probably would be a good idea to leave it to 7 pm for the workers

Demon: which browser are you using? It needs to be html 5 compliant for full functionality, although you should still be able to use a fairly recent non-html5-compliant browser. Javascript also needs to be enabled, since it relies on that for all the client side workings.

flexdream: ooops well I didn’t mean anything by it, I’m ‘between jobs’ myself at this point

That must be it, I do need to update my browser.

      • Julio says:

You should still be able to chat using an older browser but you wouldn’t be able to send pictures in, I think that’s the only difference. Which browser and operating system is it that you’re using?

I’m in the chat room now but it doesn’t seem to be functioning. I’ve posted a line or two and other people show as joined but there’s no reply.

If you join the chat and can’t do anything, refresh the page and log in again. Obviously this is a bug which will need looking at. I will be working on this tomorrow and I will let the powers that be know as soon as it’s fixed.

as you know I was ok after I logged in again. I entered the wrong password once and it still showed me as having joined the conversation, so those messages can be inaccurate.

You’re right it will do that, I checked. Fixed for next deployment though.

I created an account but when I try to log in it says that e mail address already used try password reset. How?

    • Julio says:

Good question, that hasn’t been implemented yet. But do you need to do a password reset? You should only need to do that if you have forgotten your password.

I’ve seen that you logged into the chat, but didn’t post anything. Were you having problems with anything?

      • Maturecheese says:

Yes it keeps telling me that the e mail address for that login has already been used even though I am using the correct password as I wrote it down. It then suggests I reset the password strange i know. I’ll get back to it tomorrow as the Swans are about to kick off.

I had to reset my password by creating an account again with my old details. But I notice the password requirement needs at least 8 characters – and with one number, one Upper case letter, and one lower case in it. Once I altered it to suit it was fine. 🙂

If you return the question time chat that means I’ll have to watch it!

A good point. But it’s definitely more entertaining when there are other people who can laugh at it with you.

Thanks Charlatans and Teddy Bear, there are a couple of issues which I will work on tomorrow and hopefully have it working for tomorrow night! Thanks for giving it a go

Logged in ok, but the screen on my iPad to read comments is very small, about the size of a small mobile screen. Any way I can enlarge it to full screen?

    • Julio says:

Yes, I think it is possible to resize the chat pane to match the size of the device window but that’s probably not going to get done in time for tonight’s chat.

Just looked at where QT is tonight and who is on it. Don’t think I will be able to stomach it to be honest.

    • Julio says:

Agreed that it’s not a scintillating lineup, but it would be good to have as many people as possible anyway. Put it this way, if the chat does screw up, you’re probably not going to miss much.

it doesn’t seem to work for me either. I’m a technophobe so it’s probably something wrong my end. Just shows a black box.? I’ll have a look tonight when QT is on.

    • Julio says:

The Lord: do you see the login boxes? If so, try logging in, you’ll see the chat in progress then.

I was looking at the chat logs and it looked like you had forgotten your login name, so I sent you it

  14. Julio says:

I fixed a couple of issues, mainly the one which was bugging me the most, that if you did a page refresh with a current login, it wouldn’t get all the comments. Anyway I’m happy with it for tonight if anyone fancies a chat.

This is great – I’ll be sure to check it out when I have the time, and perhaps join in next week if I can.

Although – as others have said – this means I might have to actually watch the damn programme now. I’ve boycotted the thing pretty much since the old chat was disbanded.

I can thoroughly recommend this cleansing of the system. I might have to feel dirty again, if this new chat thingy works out OK.
