One story which is getting absolutely no traction with Brussels Broadcasting this week is the continuing Greek economic tragedy. To summarise, since 2008, Greece’s economy has contracted by 25%. Greece’s gross external debt has ballooned to 245% of GDP, which is clearly unsustainable, and the unemployment rate is still at 23%. The prospects for “convergence” with other members of the eurozone (which is to say that Greece might slowly catch up) are dismal. Without further EU debt relief, the threat of a Grexit remains a real possibility.
Not too hard to see why this doesn’t form part of the current BBC narrative.
Gunner, I had a long conversation the other day with one of the few Remainers I have met who presented a good and rational argument in favour of remain (he is an economics writer and believes Britain will be worse off for various tariff reasons). However, he agreed with me that the EU’s treatment of Greece was shocking. (Greece and the German migrant invitation were the two things that led me to vote Leave).
Just so. While we are being lectured on the sanctity of EU solidarity, the Greeks have been taken to the cleaners. In one sense given the small size of the Greek economy and unless you happen to be a Greek citizen, the EU can continue to disregard their troubles with relative impunity. But the Greek problem is a symptom of a major eurozone faultline, dividing north from south, which would require massive fiscal reforms and inter-country fiscal transfers to fix. The required loss of national sovereignty over tax policy would be something which I doubt most national electorates would accept (no Barnett formula for Germany …). Without these reforms the Euro remains the equivalent of a slow systemic poison. Like you I decided that the UK would be better off, despite some short terms costs, totally divorced from this economic train wreck in the making.
Bloody hell the leftist/globalist tentacles get everywhere. Would be useful to have a handy table of the offenders and some alternative competing companies who only want to sell us stuff.
God damn their one-world cheap labour business models!
There are good reasons why companies should not indulge in politics NOR should the public indulge in boycotts.
In a clean market customers get the best sustainable deal.
In boycotts
– there is collateral damage as innocent workers get laid off due to us trying to punish the millionaire boss.
– it can escalate into tit for tat
– Activists use false rumours to get you to boycott corps.
In one sense – and only one – the Islamic terrorists did us a favour: without them the Islamization of the West by stealth and deceit (taqiyya) would have gone on under the radar and unabated, with bibistan supporting it every step of the way.
Now the war is on.
@Peter ‘Islamic terror ? No it’s right-ring radicalisation is a bigger problem’
Is the narrative of SJWs like BBC Trending
… like again on Sunday
That’s an important deception cos while ALL non-self-defense violence is wrong Islamic culture provides special framework where contemplated violence is not called out by the community.
“BBC Trending”=”BBC Mind-bending”
as they seek to tell you what should be trending instead of what is.
Sunday they tackled the Quebec killer, but tried a new technique … softly, softly
– They admitted his Facebook page was mixed not just right wing stuff
– gave examples of him trolling
…then went on to talk about lonely people being radicalised by right wing campaigning
Whoa ! They gave no evidence that this is what had happened
Just 6 people were killed
– he’s been arrested.
This week was in other aspects totally different from the normal spin, as if they were trying to not get called out about hiding how the story rumours spread. They were almost fair in reporting those machinations.
Just watched the media wringing their hands and slating the NHS and government again – not enough money, waiting times up, hard luck stories punctuated by isn’t it time we upped our taxes and why is Jeremy Hunt failing?. Methinks they are looking down the wrong end of the telescope. Where’s the pie chart on the telly showing the reasons for and numbers of A&E admissions? ergo How many of these could be avoided by adopting a healthier (sorry, less excessive) lifestyle, taking the strain off the front line? I don’t even see this on the NHS website but then maybe my googling skills aren’t up to scratch. Oh dear maybe I should visit A&E then
