Ever since the Jihadist attack at Westminster, the BBC has been pushing two parallel narratives.
- We have to get used to living with terrorism. This echoes the thoughts of Muslim Mayor Khan
- We will never know what was the motivation by the Islamic killer.
Both spurious nonsense, of course, but the BBC (along with The Met, it appears) is determined to ensure that Islam is disconnected from Islamic terrorism.
Yes, indeed. They are also saying he was a lone wolf attacker and yet sent a WhatsApp message moments before the attack – and Amber Rudd is banging on about how they need to know who he was communicating with and WhatsApp is encrypted. I know nothing about this phone technology but someone who does says if the security services have his phone then they must know who he sent the message to and what was said. Can anyone shed further light on this?

It’s a good question and the BBC seems confused about this too. I guess the point is that if the messages weren’t encrypted the Government could intercept the messages in real time and perhaps, perhaps, intercept the terrorist before he goes on a rampage. Or more likely, get Amber Rudd and her fellow MPs to a secure place while joe public is mowed down.

… and if Police have his phone, they should indeed be able to read the messages. So if they are convinced that he “acted alone” and his “motives unclear” , then the messages should be released …

All electronic and telephone communications in the UK are monitored and the results shared with the USA via the NSA. The system is largely automated and triggered by key words found in messages; in addition, known individuals and organisations are monitored more proactively and there are more than a million of these in the UK. All internet access is logged by your ISP and can be made available to interested parties. In general, the approach is based around ‘who and when’, with retrospective analysis used if necessary. As engineerdownunder points out, the issue is that many systems are encrypted. In the case of mobile calls, for instance, this is not an issue as the authorities have been given full access by the mobile phone companies (they have ‘shared the keys’). But in the case of some foreign-owned systems, messages are encrypted and without the keys this requires a large amount of computing power, currently preventing real-time analysis. WhatsApp have been forced to provide their keys in India, where it is extremely popular and will do so here when ‘asked’. In some cases, these stories (Google and Facebook not co-operating etc) are red herrings as the authorities do not want the public to know the level of surveillance, plus they generally ignore the law and supposed guidelines. For instance, the BBC have been allowed access to people’s internet access in Northern Ireland to try and track down licence evaders using RIPA (Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000) – legislation supposedly introduced to help monitor terrorists.

WhatsApp uses end to end encryption, meaning only the sender and the receiver of the message can de-crypt the message. In a world of ever increasing government surveillance, expect to see more of these sorts of services for privacy conscious individuals.
The real reason Rudd is making a big song and dance about WhatsApp is just another piece of misinformation to obfuscate the true cause of the attack.

London calling

What losing a war looks like. More accurately, refusing to fight it in the first place, or even acknowledge you’re in one at all, when it’s being waged against you at every imaginable turn—with not just the usual weapons, but with anything ready to hand: hammers, knives, screwdrivers, garden tools, ordinary vehicles, matches—random bits of paper and plastic and string, gobs of hair. Only then will the Left finally understand their childish folly, and the sort of enemy we’re facing. Not a moment before; their delusions are far too precious to them to admit error before the horror leaps out at them from every conceivable source, and renders them incapable of clinging steadfastly to their pathetic denial.

He got all his instructions from the Qur’an, or from people who got their instructions from the Qur’an.
Clearly, therefore, the Qur’an has nothing to do with Islam

ISIS claimed responsibility for it, but according to our police, he has no links to them ie we’re going to ignore that fact. No discussion that Islamic extremists will commit, then be supported by ISIS. No discussion at all really. I’ve just complained to the BBC that I am sick of seeing his picture, the murderous bastard does not deserve such coverage, and they are making him into a martyr, as usual. More people need to complain otherwise things will just get worse.
