When the polls close at 1opm, the BBC coverage kicks in and I am sure you will want to comment on it here! I predict an emotional breakdown as I don’t believe a word that the ‘Polls’ are suggesting! The floor is yours….

The result last night is a disaster for the Tories, and a stunning result for anti-austerity and anti-racist politics.
Theresa May has no right to remain as Prime Minister. Her mandate has been decimated.
Join our protest at 5pm tonight at Downing St.
Called by Lambeth NUT, London Region UCU, Islington NUT.
Another protest has also been called, we support this call and will join the protests together:

Kuenssberg has just said (on the Radio 4 news at 6 pm, in the final comment piece) that Corbyn proved himself to be “the ultimate campaigner”.

Remind me: how many seats did Blair get in 1997 and 2001? And how many did Corbyn just win?

I’ve complained to the BBC about her, asking why she has suddenly become so important that her name is scrolled along the bottom of the news channel (yesterday).; and the journalistic behaviour of their reporters – screaming like fish-wives their questions to their intended victims across the street. And we wonder why kids today have no/little manners – oh yes, these journalists are the generation who are parents !!!! (own questioned answered then)

As a rule, I tend not to watch any news programs after a GE. Hopefully this will now give the people a reprieve from all this in your face politics which the Media has been shoving down our throats for the past 3 years.

      Yes sluff,

Al beeb has got its narrative sorted out. Hard kicking of the conservatives where ever possible .
During the day someone said it was easier for labour to promise everything because they didn’t expect to get in. The numbers didn’t add up but no one cared. The kids and others fell for empty Corbyn promises not particularly picked apart by main stream – too busy laughing at car crash interviews .

I can’t see May or the new government to last long – particularly since main stream media will go on and on pushing the bias . If I was fedup before it’s going to be even worse now

Well lets face it the beeb have been the unofficial opposition since 2015 as there was no-one credible in the Labour party.
Corbins claiming a victory (that`s two of them who are dodgy at maths then) and Kuenesberg is still harping on (does she sleep?). I reckon she should have a go herself, she seems to have all the right credentials, rudeness, verbal dia…hoea and a face you`re not going to forget.
I suppose it`s only fair for them to have a gloat after the massive embarrassment of their Brexit predictions last year.

  8. Payne by name says:

Apologies for repeating but I wasn’t sure that people might see this on the other thread. I must confess to feeling pretty gutted at the whole affair.

The left (and remaining right) can already sense that Brexit will now be a quivering, apologising mess of an affair where if it happens to go ahead will surely be a deliberately bad deal that makes many Brexiteers wish they had never bothered. We’ll be rolling over and taking it as hard as the EU wants to give it to us with a smile and a sycophantic ‘yes, of course we’ll pay an exorbitant exit fee’.

The Europhile Tories like Ken Clarke will do everything they can to exert their power to force the leaders hand with endless threats of mutiny and rebellion.

Our hoped for toughness on immigration and Islam and terror attacks will melt in the face of a resurgent loony left ‘love everyone’ mantra that will consign us to even greater immigration, forced tolerance of Islam unwillingness to integrate and a general dismantling of the backbone that I thought we were managing to rediscover.

Our finances will get even worse than they already are as the Tories struggle to placate a demanding Labour opposition that had no ability to fund the ridiculous Christmas wish list that they promised everyone.

Corbyn, and the unpleasant almost fascist side of the left, have won without the inconvenience of having to enact and carry out their delusional, ill-conceived plans. They can snipe from the sidelines, supported by their ever willing champion and sponsor the BBC, on every little issue that seeks a common sense resilience but will be answered with a placatory weakness.

From feeling so proud of the British people in standing up to the relentless bullying and endless doom mongering of the referendum campaign and having the stones to say no to the EU, they have now melted to leave us with a crowd pleasing, virtue signalling shambles of a government.

I know it sounds dramatic but I enjoy politics and the direction of our country is important to me. Yet I feel we’ve taken a ridiculous tumble and the realisation of it stings every time I forget about it and then suddenly return to it.

And Day’s the word for it too as the three top solicitors from the noble firm of Leigh Day – the diligent seekers of truth and justice who have gained millions by prosecuting our soldiers and driving many close to suicide – have been cleared of all ‘wrong-doing’ by the Bar Council. Just watched the ITV “analysis” of the election results.
As asinine and cliche stupid as any other outlet that employs ex-Beebots like Robert Peston. Just heard Jon Snow tell us all that ” the tabloids got Corbyn all wrong”.
So unlike the broadshits like yourself Snowjobby eh?
The main stories could be one of many. For me , the resurrection of Conservatism in Scotland, the recount for Farron, the binning of Clegg, the fact that Labour may well have won if they`d had a Johnson and not an IRA spunkdoll(albeit with greyer pubes than in 1983 for a beard)
Could also discuss the wipeput of Remainaiacs as anything but a toffs yacht for Soros and his frothy fuckups like Campbell, Major and Soubry. 80% of MPs now are committed for Brexit as in the pipeline, so who needs Barniers opinion now?
Any fo the above would be newsworthy.
    But -as yet-no debate.
Just hero-worship of Corbyn, as far as I can see and his delusions that he actually WON this election.
Tories lose a few Labour gain a few, Scottish Tories take massive chunk out of Krankies oatmeal warriors. But nothing much.

There should have been a general election when Camoron resigned after the referendum.
That way the winners, at that time probably the Conservatives, would have had a leader who had fought and won a GE and obtained a clear mandate to trigger Article 50 and get on with Brexit.

Instead we had a PM who didn’t even go through a leadership contest within her own party and who lately decides to call a GE to give her a bigger majority; the result of that decision is she gets a smaller majority. I couldn’t believe my ears this morning when I heard we’d ended up with a hung parliament.

I don’t know about anybody else, but everyone I’ve dealt with today at work has seemed thoroughly p****d off.

Ive just arrived back from picking my daughter up from University for her summer break…

When i arrived at her halls of residents she was sat with two girls and boy waiting for me. They were talking about the election and how upsetting and frightening it had all been, i asked them why.

They then should me emails they had received from other senior students . The email said ” it would be bad for them not to vote Labour and that on there ballot card was a number and through that number they could find out if they didnt vote for Labour ”

One email said all the things you read about Jeremy Corbyn and his terror connections were fake news..!!

Another email said ”NOT VOTING FOR LABOUR = CUNT”

My daughter said you dare not say if you didn’t support Labour for fear of being ostracised and bullied..

And yesterday senior students were coming round and making sure that they went and cast there vote. It seems very well organised and planned to me, i wonder by whom..!!!!!!!!!!!

This is disgraceful and unbelievable. I wonder how much this went on at other Universities.

Actually every ballot paper has an unique serial number which can be used if fraud is suspected. Because of that serial number it is possible to see how an individual person voted but it is illegal to do so.

Students wouldn’t have access to the ballot paper as these are counted and then bagged up and deposited with the Clerk of the Crown in Chancery. They are kept for one year and one day after the election and no-one is allowed to access them unless the High Court say so.

If those senior students were trying to influence someone voting on the actual election day then that is a criminal offence and they should be reported.

This should be a joke if it wasn’t for real.

Apparently a homeless man was arrested on ‘Legsby Avenue’ (yes that really is its name) for the crime of ‘carrying a sharpened pencil in the vicinity of a Mosque’.

No you did read read it right the first time, and not only was he arrested, but charged and dragged before the beak .

The charges were dropped by the prosecution before a scheduled trial and dismissed

Although the Police claimed he said he was going to stab someone with it he completely denies this.

“The court heard that police had been alerted about a possible incident near the mosque and a policewomen arrived on the scene and saw Jones pull a pencil out of his pocket.

He was alleged to have told her that he had it with him “so I can stab someone with it if I need to — I don’t mean you.”

But Jones claimed: “I haven’t said anything like that. The mosque thing’s not true. I haven’t threatened her. I have not threatened to stab.”

Prosecutor Andrew Vaughan told the court: “There is not enough evidence to show that he was the man at the mosque.”

Deputy district judge Philip Houlden said that the whole purpose of having a pencil was “surely that it should actually have a sharp point” so that it could be used properly.

      To paraphrase Kevin Strom.

“To determine the true rulers of any society, all you must do is ask yourself this question: Who is it that I am not permitted to criticise? We all know who it is that we are not permitted to criticise. We all know who it is that it is a sin to criticise. Sodomy is no longer a sin in the UK. Treason, and burning and spitting and urinating on the Union Jack is no longer a sin in the UK. Gross desecration of Catholic or Protestant religious symbols is no longer a sin in the UK. Cop-killing is no longer a sin in the UK – it is celebrated in rap “music.” The degradation of beautiful young girls by disgusting grooming gangs is no longer a sin in the UK. The killing by the multiple millions of the next generation in the womb is no longer a sin in the UK. But offending Muslims is the ultimate sin in the UK. “

I just watched ” Question Time” on the election. Alistair Campbell’s last comment about the Daily Mail which he was
as usual going on about “was don’t buy it ” to the audience and us.All the Daily Mail is a POPULIST newspaper,it always has been. It has absolutely no morals, it just wants to reflect the opinions of the people who buy it. That is why in the thirties when
Mosley was becoming popular ,they supported him. If Hitler would of won the war there would of only been allowed one
newspaper in the country ” The Daily Mail Zeitung”
The Mail with the exception of Richard Littlejohn has been singing the praises of ” Mother Theresa” for months,
because they thought she was popular with middle England, maybe she was.BUT after her Election shambles , The Mail
now know that she is a lame duck. So to maintain their populist position they get PIERS MORGAN on line to basically call
her a useless c—. And that says everything you need to know about the Daily Mail.

        You are right Thoughtful.

In the 1920s, Fascism was “progressive”, it was seen as a muscular and virile sort of Socialism. Left wing loonies such as George Bernard Shaw were very impressed with il Duce. The Left have, of course, airbrushed that out of history. Fascism now is now “right wing” and v.v. bad.

        • Wild says:

Anglo-Saxon, linguistically, means the Angle version of Saxon. Fascism is a right-wing version of progressiveness. It is not conservatism. A progressive is anti-conservative. Fascists want revolutionary change. They esteem violence as a way of bringing it about. They are “right-wing” progressives because they see themselves as realists, just as the revolutionary communist Lenin attacked left-wing (or utopian) socialism.

Fascism (like so much that is bad in the modern world) comes from the French Revolution – it is a nationalist version of progressivism, in which what is deemed to be good or bad is determined on national rather than class lines. They want to create a society in which the collective will is supreme; by which I mean rule by the Party, not democracy.

Also think it is important to check what the BBC are up to…I find it almost like an addiction and have been trying to avoid their website like the plague. I thought Sky were much better before the election. Sadly, I think a large part of the country still regard the BBC as the impartial, solid backbone of Britain that they claim to be. After their recent performance, you would think that someone in the government would be wanting to take action against them.

That has not been true for years. They blew that reputation away when Maggie Thatcher was in power. The BBC was always full of Leftists but (as is their way) they have gradually cleared out anybody with an alternative view, and have consequently trashed the BBC’s reputation for impartiality.

Apparently, the Scottish Unionist Party was independent of the Conservative Party until 1965, when that complete and utter twat Edward Heath insisted they be merged, no doubt as part of some sort of cack-handed piece of exciting 1960s modern managerial theory.

The upshot was that what had once been the biggest party in Scotland dwindled into almost nothing as it was seen (probably rightly) as an offshoot of an English party which was based in London and had nothing to say to Scotland.

Ruth Davidson has earned the right to run the Scottish party. If Scotland had not returned 13 Conservative MPs, a revolutionary Socialist would now be forming a government, and Britain would have taken its first step on the path to becoming the Venezuela of Europe.

Worse was to come. When Maggie started to go a bit mad as part of her descent in her dotage, she insisted that the Community Charge (in overall terms a good idea) was trialled first in Scotland alone!

They might have got away with it but no-one with a good practical economic brain had thought through all the implications and the implementation trial took no account of widely varying individual circumstances. It was applied with heavy hand and backed by the Courts equally heavily.

Net result: ‘English’ (one Nation ie one Union) Conservatives were unwelcome in Scotland until recently, despite Scots being some of the most conservative (note the small ‘c’) people on earth.

They still just do not get it, do they? What use is unity against a seven tonne f*cking truck? What has to happen for them to realise this snowflake ‘spirit’ is not only not going to help, but is actually reckless?

          Oak, LOL.

Others on here think Jacob Rees-Mogg could be the one.

I am slightly uneasy with him because not only does he appear to be an arrogant, patrician-style Conservative (High Tory, actually) he is in reality rather like that. He knows what is best for everyone and being a full-on ‘representative politician’ is not for him. His own words on the Westminster Hour betray him as that.

However, I think he was a star of the EU Referendum campaign and on the Leave side. (As an aside, is it my anti-EU bias or would I be right in thinking there were no stars on the Remain side? Cannot think of any outstanding Remain campaigners.)

Secondly, people change, develop, grow over the course of time. As well as deteriorate. “Oh, hello Theresa and Jeremy. Didn’t see you standing behind me there.”

I think Jacob Rees Mogg, especially with a little coaching and ‘styling’, might just grow into the job. The key to winning both the Party leadership as well as winning over the country will be two-fold: economics and getting the UK out of the EU. On that last, I would add the adjective ‘fully’. We have evidence from this week how awful the EU has been for the UK and we need to be out.

Economics, and the taxation aspects of it, were largely missing from the Conservative manifesto and totally missing from their campaign. That is obviously a weak area for Theresa May and her office. Another reason why Hill and Timothy should go next week. It was where the attack should have been directed at Labour – not by dismissing the Labour Party and its proposals – but by pre-empting and proposing alternatives.

I’m very uneasy about the prospect of Boris Johnson as a Party leader. His weaknesses would at some time be his undoing as they outweigh, in my view, his obvious strengths. Johnson is weak on economics and tax. He is weak on promises, both in making them and getting them delivered. See his record as Mayor of London. The nation, we, would be reliant on his weaknesses, not his strengths. He however, like May, wants the PM job and probably has done all his life. His career was appearing to be over during most of last week. The electorate have now handed him on Thursday yet another chance.

Boris Johnson is ‘The Friday Man’.

The key to who will lead, as ever, lies in the Party itself. Who they feel can rescue them from this dreadful place. That may drive them toward Bojo.

Snuff it would be nice to see Gove or Leadsome – at least they never wavered from their commitment to Brexit unlike Bojo whom I trust no more than I trust May. It would also be nice to see IDS and Rees Mogg in senior positions. None of this of course will happen as May is now just as reliant on the support of remainers as she is the brexit portion of her party.

Gove as PM I could tolerate. It was said that at Education many of his Civil Servants loved him and even some of the teachers and their Unions started to respect what he was trying to do for the profession and, most of all, for the pupils.

I have a notion that he may have been set up by one or two mad keen Bojo supporters.

Gove, as Boris’s leadership campaign manager merely went to him to tell him the truth – he was unelectable because too many people in the Party knew what Boris was like in his previous jobs and would not support him against the other candidates. They probably said they would back him if he stood against May & Leadsom, so Gove did and was then made out to be a traitor by one or two of those putative supporters.

I could have that wrong but that’s my guess – shrewd or otherwise – at what happened.

Yes, they smell blood don’t they? People in the media need to calm down and remember that, although May got it very badly wrong:

        – She won the popular vote. Yes I know we don’t operate that way, but it was considered relevant for Clinton after the US presidential election, so make your minds up.
        – If May was as bad as Corbyn claims, why didn’t he win? Remember Labour lost.
        – Corbyn had to resort to a blatant bribe, and still didn’t win. The young will forget and disperse. Short attention spans.
        – Does anyone seriously believe that Kensington is Labour?
        – Nobody knows what Boris etc are thinking so don’t pretend that you do.
        – Indications seem to be that Brussels wants to go ahead to avoid uncertainty, which is not good for them either. They might even be glad to be rid of us, at least in some respects. Suits me.
        – Diane Abbott has gone away, for now, I think. (Perhaps because her migraine has not gone away.)
        – Labour is very short of talent, although that could change. Would take time though.
        – Immigration has not gone away.
        – Terrorism has not gone away.
        – Corbyn’s past has not gone away, although the young don’t seem to do “past”.
        – Greece’s problems (and the other PIGS’) have not gone away.
        – People who voted for Brexit in the referendum have not gone away, they are waiting and watching.
        – Farage kept his powder dry, is not tainted by Westminster, and he has not gone away.
        – The £1.7 trillion debt has certainly not gone away, people have just been allowed to forget about it. Big mistake.
        – The LibDems, the most anti-Brexit party, have not enjoyed a resurgence. Clegg has gone away (but probably only as far as Broadcasting House).

Yes, it’s a mess, but we’ll get over it. As you point out, Corbyn is no spring chicken.

Imagine now if the Conservative and Unionist party reclaim that UNIONIST word-and get stuck into the unions , backing Gerard Coyne as they once did the UDM etc.

Never understood the logic, promoted by some, of punishing the Conservatives for not being conservative enough by voting for an old Trot. You’re punishing yourself; doesn’t make sense.

Tactical voting aside, hold your nose and vote for the best party available, regardless of how inept it is.

Never underestimate the sheer unprincipled bigotry of the Left. The Labour supporter Armando Iannucci divided his time on Question Time last night praising the need for alliances between political parties (it is the progressive thing to do) and attacking the Conservatives for going into an alliance with the DUP.

Armando Iannucci did not spot the problem with his logic because in his mind people to the Right of him politically don’t really count as people.

Isn’t it amazing how often both parties manage to disregard the importance of personal likeability of the leader?
Not just May but Miliband, Brown, Duncan-Smith, Hague.
The winners, Blair, Cameron, even back to MacMillan so often have a certain affability and ease, content in their own skin.

There are exceptions, but in general I think this is the case.

I did’t really ‘like’ Margaret Thatcher.

But she oozed leadership, had a wicked sense of humour, cared about the country and didn’t give a flying rating for what the blob thought. Hence I respected her.

For May or Corbyn or Farron or the others, that is about zero out of four.

One story about Thatcher that impressed me was when a member of the catering staff at No 10 dropped a tureen of soup (or something) in front of a roomful of guests. Her first reaction was to comfort the horrified young girl, not apologise to her guests. Not the reaction of a monster.

I didn’t like Cameron but liked Hague. Also liked Heath (was to be a complete disaster) in comparison to Wilson. I liked Major but he was also a disaster.

Our present mess is down to those last three. If Heath or Wilson had done the decent thing and asked the electorate via a Referendum whether they wished to enter the EEC, and Major had asked us to re-confirm whether we wished to be in the EU, we would be in a far better place right now. Even if the electorate had said ‘Yes’ to both, the principle would have been established that a major Treaty change has to be acceptable on a straight Yes or No vote, before the UK accedes.

No ifs, no buts, no demonstrating as losers that ‘it isn’t fair, we don’t want it’.

Now let us talk about Brand.
Unlike many of my marketing colleagues I have always believed that Brand, and Brand position, is ultimately the gift of the customer/ consumer. As a business, you can aspire to a Brand but you have to deliver and execute your product or service to that brand. I mean, consider BA and Emirates these days. They aspire to do the same thing, but the difference in delivery is gaping.
Now consider May. The intended brand was strong and stable. The delivered brand was fragile, brittle and rabbit-in-the -headlights.
Now consider Corbyn. The intended and delivered brand were closely matched. He may be barking, but he is consistent.

The May Brand discontinuity caused a certain number of people discomfort and so to reflect. Some of them changed their vote as a result. The result is obvious.

Just one of several spectacular own goals.

Sluff, good post. Prior to ‘Strong and Stable’ the brand was ‘Fairness’ and ‘Help for the Struggler and JAMs’, btw.

Apparently that did not extend to her own Party colleagues and Civil Servants other than Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill. Fascinating last half-hour on the TOADY Programme this morning. Very revealing. Or confirming. We suspected there was a problem somewhere. It is now fully confirmed.

If Theresa May wants to survive as long as the end of the Party Conference in September she will have to sack Timothy and Hill next week. If they stay, she is already washed up wreckage and will disappear on an outgoing tide, sometime soon.

I note your last sentence but don’t forget the obvious bribery, er, incentives from Corbyn’s and McDonnell’s manifesto. The parallels with February 1974 are interesting and were also highlighted on TOADY. That had an effect, particular in the seats won or lost by or to a student vote.

And of course, up2, changing the intended brand every 5 minutes shows a complete lack of credibility.
You see it in business all the time. A new CEO brings in a new mission statement and ‘brand reposition’ but without really understanding the business.
The workforce (which in my book is everyone from the shop floor to senior site, sales, and ops managers) see the difference between the actual delivery and the ‘new brand’ and the lack of credibility is corrosive. Wthether deliberately or subliminally they don’t therefore support the new leadership, who thus fail to deliver their targets and are gone in about 3 years, the business thus having made little progress in the meantime.

We had one communication from our Tory MP.

A flyer that had him and her on the front, headlined ‘I stand with Theresa May’.

      Not a great message.

Luckily the Labour candidate, an ex teacher, shared a letter written by her daughter (and mother herself), that made one feel sorry for any poor sod who was taught in her classes.

The Green Yummie mummy imploded, the Lib Dem could only talk about ‘fighting’ but was vague on how, the Independent made an orchard out of the money tree, and UKIP didn’t bother.

So relatively speaking, the May brand stunk about the least. And that is how the election worked out.

Given that about half the country could even think to vote Labour – and the BBC, msm and the entire public sector machine continues to encourage them I propose the following solution.

We need a new old-school right wing party (anti-immigration, fiscally conservative, law & order, anti-welfare etc), but this time it’s led by black, gay woman! No old white dudes to be seen in her cabinet either. Ruth Davidson is doing ok but not quite ticking enough boxes imo.

Think of it, that party would be publicly untouchable. No more automatic booing on Question Time, middle class lefties would have a bad attack of cognitive dissonance, Momentum and Hope Not Hate would just look like the fascists they are..

With all their high-powered personnel, many from top level jobs in industry, it is utterly incomprehensible to me, the Conservative level of naivety throughout this election debacle. The problem there is the ‘top level jobs’. Sadly, business is suffering just as badly as the law, politics, medicine and other endeavours.

Just because someone rises to the top of a company which she or he doesn’t own, does not imply competence in managing that business. The current generation of ‘CEO’s do not start and build businesses, they are like parasites, gnawing away at the woodwork, hoping they will have moved on to fresh material when the house eventually collapses.

  38. Charlie Martel says:

As so often, the beebistan’s bias lies even more in what it doesn’t say, as pointed out by Stephen Glover in today’s DM.
    Extracts below:
Why did the all-powerful BBC refuse to tell the truth about Mr Corbyn?
“Theresa May surely has only herself to blame for the Tories’ appalling performance on Thursday…

But there is another group of people who certainly made a contribution to the outcome and should be hanging their heads in shame this morning. I am speaking of the BBC.
Our national broadcaster accounts for about 50 per cent of news output in this country via its multiple television, radio and web outlets. It is immeasurably more influential than any other news channel or newspaper. That is why it is so important it fulfils its sacred duty to invigilate politicians without fear or favour.” [ha ha ha]

“In the case of Jeremy Corbyn, it failed miserably over the past few weeks. This was rather surprising because during the Labour leadership contests in 2015 and 2016, the BBC was almost eager to expose his obvious shortcomings and unsavoury political liaisons. Having been admirably forensic then, Auntie was laughably indulgent over the past few weeks.
Let me put my complaint another way. How many of the nearly 13 million people who voted Labour are aware that Jeremy Corbyn has a track record as an associate of Middle Eastern terrorists and IRA killers?

How many of them know that in 1984 this lifelong friend of Irish Republicans asked two former IRA convicts to speak in the House of Commons, a fortnight after the IRA had tried to blow up Margaret Thatcher and the Cabinet, killing five people in the process?
And what proportion realise that as recently as 2009 Corbyn described the terrorists of both Hezbollah and Hamas as his ‘friends’ as he hosted an event on their behalf?

Or that his closest ally, the self-proclaimed Marxist Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, has called for MI5 and armed police to be abolished, while saying that the IRA murderers of men, women, children, British servicemen and police officers should be ‘honoured’.
My own straw poll of decent acquaintances who voted for Corbyn suggests that very few of them have the faintest notion of the disreputable causes he has espoused. If they have any idea at all, they are liable to blame Tory scaremongering.
Ours is not a country of extremists. I find it hard to believe that so many millions of law-abiding people would have voted Labour if they had been properly apprised of just how far-out Corbyn and his coterie really are.
That there is such widespread ignorance of what the Labour leader has got up to over the years — the terrorists he has succoured and the bloody hands he has shaken — must in large measure be attributed to the journalistic failures of the all-powerful BBC.
Look at what happened after last Saturday’s terrorist attack on London Bridge. Corbyn immediately blamed the outrage on police cuts, even though armed police took just eight minutes to arrive on the scene and despatch the three murderers in the most effective way.

As Sir Richard Dearlove, a former head of MI6, noted in a piece in Thursday’s Daily Telegraph that Corbyn’s response was ‘nakedly political’.
Sir Richard — who is no Tory stooge — wrote that ‘if you ask professionals in the police, they would recognise that creating 10,000 jobs for community policing won’t have the slightest effect on the problem of Islamic terrorism’. He also suggested that Jeremy Corbyn’s ‘links with those quite ready to use terror’ would mean he wouldn’t be cleared to join any of the country’s security services. In fact, in the past ‘MI5 would actively have investigated him’.
If only Sir Richard’s chilling article had appeared a few days earlier it might have opened the eyes of some of the idealistic young people who voted for Corbyn. But I don’t suppose the BBC would have given it wider circulation, so bizarrely anxious has it been to protect the Labour leader from examination.
In the days following the terrorist outrage a week ago, almost every BBC bulletin took seriously Corbyn’s absurd allegation that Tory cuts were to blame. His own utter unsuitability for office — as a virtual accomplice of terrorists — was scarcely mentioned.

Nor, while the shamelessly devious Labour leader was extolling the police and promising them more money, did any BBC interviewer ask him or any of his colleagues why his local Labour Party office in the Seventies put a poster in its window depicting policemen as pigs wearing helmets.
No questions were forthcoming about why this fervent admirer of bobbies should have been a founder of the Socialist Campaign for a Labour Victory, whose manifesto before the 1983 general election declared that ‘the capitalist police are an enemy of the working class’.
I’m afraid the often somnolent Tories have been somewhat lumbering in making the point that under the skin of this seemingly cuddly and apparently inoffensive grandfatherly figure lurks a man who has devoted his life to undemocratic causes that would shock most British people — if only they knew.
But when Boris Johnson tried to argue along these lines on the Today programme on Tuesday morning — criticising Jeremy Corbyn for his consistent refusal to back counter-terrorist measures — the interviewer, Mishal Husain, repeatedly interrupted him. She insisted she would ‘set the record straight’ and repeated Corbyn’s pious remarks following the London Bridge attack as though she were his official spokesman.
Boris then reasonably questioned the ability of Diane Abbott (another apologist for terror, who adds incompetence to her list of sins) to deal with a major attack. Mishal Husain shut him up. ‘No, no, please stop talking.’
This, for me, was one of the lowest points of a dispiriting campaign. A leading politician trying to show the dangers of voting Labour is censored by a politically correct BBC journalist who doesn’t want people to hear.
Had they been allowed to know the full truth about Jeremy Corbyn, many idealistic young people might have had second thoughts. They might have realised that the young murdered in the London Bridge attack were not victims of police cuts, and that Corbyn is one of the last politicians on earth likely to be tough with the terrorists who killed them.
Why should the BBC have afforded Corbyn and the sinister McDonnell (not to mention the idiotic Diane Abbott) such latitude? Most of its journalists surely can’t sympathise with his hard-Left policies.
No, I believe they were given an easy time because many BBC employees can’t stomach Theresa May’s robust approach to Brexit. They thought that, if elected, Labour would negotiate a much softer break with the EU.
Of course, it’s not the job of the BBC to take sides in elections. But it is its responsibility to defend the values of democracy and help the public ascertain whether candidates for high office respect those values.
Does Jeremy Corbyn? The BBC, on which we so depend, has given him a free ride and today he is one step closer to power. If our national broadcaster continues to pander to him, it won’t be long before he’s in No 10. And then God help us all — including the BBC, which, irony of ironies, the Corbynistas hate.”
