Ex-Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg loses
Note Dimbleby claims Clegg and Libdems ‘paid the price’ for going into coalition with Tories…no….they paid the price because Clegg u-turned on his tuition fee promise…and now because they are useless whinging Remoaners.
Sadly missed…but oh no…the rather sinister lying old goat……
Vince Cable’s back
You can’t keep a good man down.
Am surprised about Cable. I thought the Twickenham voters would realise he’s no longer young enough for the job.
Cleggie going is definitely a pro-Brexit scalp and if as seems likely with the BBC not mentioning the Lib Dems overall results on the 3pm News – apart from Clegg’s loss – then Vince may be holding his Parliamentary meetings with LibDem colleagues in the proverbial telephone box.
The BBC’s political situation is looking none too good. More on that later.

Not a comedy Thread. There’s going to be an element of political paralysis for a while, something we could do without. Apparently the LibDems have done a bit better than the lack of a BBC News mention indicated.
The problem is – and this is where it gets rather serious (am listening to TODAY & Philip Cowley discussing this) – we will probably have to have another Election after the Party Conference season and after the German Election.

I was kidding, it’s just that I only just recovered from the laughter fit brought on by that Sheffield result.
I agree it’s an uttter mess (stronger word implied) but thank goodness it wasn’t worse. Without the SNP making a balls up of the last few years and the conservatives being preferable to Salmond even we’d actually have a Corbyn government, mad as that sounds. We came *this* close!

Not SC either, but I don’t think anything will happen to Sturgeon. The gloss is off, but they were never going to be able to repeat 56 out of 59 MPs. They still won most MPs so I don’t see a move to kick her out.

Great cartoon Scottish Calvin…how topical too.
Questions I`ve yet to hear on the BBC.
1, Brexit -full steam ahead, 80% of the vote want this
2. Remoaners can slink back under their stones-the only party offering to stay got a kicking from the Tories in Scotland, or lost they former leader (albeing with 4 more seats…wup di doo!)
3. Labour would have WALKED if had they had Alan Johnson as leader as opposed to Mr Hugo Creosote.
4. Conservatives ran the worst campaign in living memory-they need to cut out the Soubrys and Clarkes now, replace the Hammonds and the Rudds with the TRUE believers like Rees Mogg, Raabs and Redwoods.
May can oversee it, but she is responsible for this dreadful near escape.
Charisma free, leaving her best players like Gove, Johnson on the bench was not a good plan.
The Tories had better get the taste for Labour wipeout once more, and need to say sorry to the young who have had nowhere to go but into Labours Child Catcher Van( pink or cerise, Islamic Green or Blood Red next).
We all voted Tory here at work and locally, but we all knew they were shit.
They`d better get the BBC quick, before we do get trouble. Our kids are seething.

Cable the arse that sold the Royal mail off at a knock down price for his city mates, how on earth does he manage to get re-elected, there needs to be an age limit on MPs and the same applied to “the house off toads”

There’s also the BBC being a bit too cocky about their role:

Heard on Radio 4 this morning “….although May won her seat and the Tories won she showed signs that she won’t be the leader of that party….”
Then they played May’s winning speech “I have no intention of standing down”.
Yep, BBC are back to pushing their own fake news agenda. At least we had 24 hours off yesterday.

Renewables provide more than half UK electricity for first time

‘National Grid reported that, on Wednesday lunchtime, power from wind, solar, hydro and wood pellet burning supplied 50.7% of UK energy. Add in nuclear, and by 2pm low carbon sources were producing 72.1% of electricity in the UK.’
This brings to mind our constituency Labour PPC claiming victory because she got more votes than all other opposition parties combined.
When she, and they, got together around the same as the Conservative MP still elected by the majority.
She was a teacher. Explains so much.
If the political ambitions don’t work out, she could always be a BBC reporter.

Considering Drax has switched to wood pellet and that is about as ‘carbon neutral’ and ‘eco-friendly’ as an 1895 steam locomotive, I’d say National Grid are, to use the vernacular, ‘avin a larf!

Given that solar goes to 0% every day for 16 hours at least and wind can be at effectively zero for days and days on end means that this narrative the BBC push is as bunk as all it’s others.

I have no time for Nick Clegg but I do find it interesting that he should have lost this time – and not in 2015.
By this I mean that, logically, anti-Clegg sentiment among more Left-wing Lib Dems or ex-Labour voters might be expected to be strongest towards the end of the coalition period, with memories of, and bitterness about, the deal with Cameron still strong. Despite that, Clegg held his seat in 2015, even when his party was reduced to 8 MPs, and stepped down as party leader, to be replaced by Farron, whose own majority on Thursday was well under 1000. With the Lib Dems gaining a few seats nett this time, you might have thought the moment of peak danger for Clegg had passed. Was it that he was no longer in the limelight? Or was it that Labour ‘organized’ the student vote effectively in Sheffield Hallam as in other university towns?
Hallam has always had a strong labour support base. In 2015 clegg only beat labour by 4% it is also an area with a high student population ( according to the new statesman one of the highest in the country) with the Abbott shagger offering free handouts to students , its only natural they will vote for him. Labour will do likewise in 2022. The tories could offset that student vote by reducing uni fees to 3k.

Naturally the bBC will go overboard on the merits of remaining in the EU..

Her Majesty has already invited Mrs May to form a government. Once the adrenaline of Labour ‘gains’ wears off, (I suspect a lot of younger voters may not understand what is going on and actually think Labour has won in some way) the full force of the snowflakes’ rage at having a Corbyn victory plucked from them will now be directed towards the shaky Tory/DUP alliance. Expect calls for a second Brexit referendum, another General Election etc ad nauseum.

I think this election has resulted in a good win for Brexit for a Hard Brexit. Why?
1. It does not give wiggle room to Theresa May for a soft Brexit.
2. It keeps the Conservatives in tight formation. They cant afford to rock the boat. They don’t want another election at the moment
3. It is unlikely the Conservatives want May to lead into the election. So May does not have to worry about that too. She can go for a Hard Brexit, without worrying about her popularity within and without parliament.
4. May will resign soon after the Brexit deal is done in two years, leaving the next Conservative leader as a sitting PM, and a clear run into the election.
5. Corbyn is going to stay on as leader- a really good result for the Conservatives. He will be an old face by the next election, and a new sitting Conservative PM will finish him off.
All in all, an excellent result for the Conservatives.

Do agree with this NCBBC
If the Conservative Party still win after being so poor, then it`s not all bad.
Will enjoy the chatterboxes of the Progressive Cause now telling us why they all loved Corbyn and were always behind him.
Still dead in the water-with plenty dirt yet to come out on the Toytown Trots.
An end to the Progressive stitch up. True Blue wins, or else a Red Islamic nightmare, as if Chavez worked out of Mosul.
The DUP will keep May honest, expect lots of grants for Belfast potholes next.
And a rewrite of McGuinness, The Hague for Gerry Adams. And one hard Brexit at that border too, to cause the EU to wail fierce.
Not an ideal result, but we are Britain and make the experts twist in their own fetid wind. May can now try and be a Conservative, or let John Redwood be Chancellor.
No longer muddle. Get the BBC onto subscription not prescription.

Not so sure about the hard Brexit being more likely now or it having been an excellent result. Treezer is really going to have to suck up to the DUP. I’ve been in a port-induced stupor or sleeping since about 4am yesterday having stayed up hoping against hope what I was seeing wasn’t happening and would soon stop. I don’t like whisky and I don’t own a revolver so I couldn’t put myself out of my misery.
Because I haven’t looked in here at all I don’t know if anyone has previously posted the following, so if so I apologise in advance –
http://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/815141/Election-2017-DUP-Theresa-May-Arlene-Foster-Brexit-coalition
If the Tories want to advance Brexit they now need to put a case to our yoof as to what the EU costs us and them, yoof, specifically. They need to point out that 4.5 million EU citizens here ( the EU’s figure not our incorrect one) means 1-2 million fewer housing units for them and more competition for their ‘graduate level’ jobs after graduation (all EU workers here are PhD’s don’t you know!) The Tories need to work out exactly how many EU workers are getting what benefits here, and how much that costs, and the Tories need to implement EU legislation which already exists but has never been applied here to ensure that any EU worker who comes here without a job does not rely on state benefits and is thrown out after 6 months rather than become a burden. A new NINo system would help here.
We need hard financial evidence to use in either the next GE or second Brexit referendum, for I fear it will be one or the other sooner rather than later.

Undoubtedly, the reasons for the Conservative failure are several, including May’s lack of appeal, a dire campaign, and the BBC’s relentless promotion of Corbyn and their cover-up of his past and present policies. However, the heading of this blog is ‘Silver Lining?’, and I think there is one, namely, the opportunity to adopt a more pragmatic approach to your divorce from the EU. For economic stability and avoiding a disruption in trade (by far the most important issue), in my opinion we need to stay in the Single Market for the time being, this being far more crucial than focusing on the less important free movement of peoples and our financial divorce settlement. As Richard North and Pete North have relentlessly explained in their respective blogs, any consideration of trading other than within the Single Market is folly of the highest order. Later on, we can start to develop our trading and political position, but at the moment time is against us. So, on reflection, the defenestration of Theresa May, with her insistence that we leave the Single Market, may be the best outcome.

Little wonder, then, that Labour wishes to lower the voting age to 16. In my opinion, a voting age of 21 would be preferable, but that’s never going to happen!

Make it 35.

In my opinion, in this age, the vote should only be for
1. Adult subjects of the Crown, who have openly acknowledged their loyalty to the Crown.
2. Have never been convicted of a serious crime.
3. Have never engaged in Sedition or showing any allegiance to any power other then the Crown.
4. Are tax payers for at least 5 years
5. In addition to the above, those who have served in the Crown’s armed forces, and discharged with honour, two votes.
It should never be for criminals, welfare spongers (who will always vote for the party that promises more free goodies), and those who will never ever be loyal to the Christian realm of Her Majesty the Queen, and Sharia supporters, who will vote in a manner to damage or destroy her realm.

Young people have no memory of living/working when Labour is in power. Blair for instance was not Labour. But Corbyn is – the genuine marxist stuff + a genuine Leftist admiration of Islam. A few years of Stalinist policies, and the young will grow up. If that is, a modern college education has not permanently damaged their brains.
What really worries me is that the BBC has misled the people, particularly the young, of the reality of Islam.
There is no hope for the West unless Islam is reformed – impossible, or it is banished from the West. The last may seem impossible, but is not. It can be done without sacrificing our principles of “Tolerance”.

I share your optimism. The youth did turn out and did, probably, largely vote for the free stuff promised by Corbyn. However, this is a short attention span generation that is likely to get bored with politics as quickly as it mobilised. A coalition with the DUP, kicking off the Brexit negotiations and some quick legislation regarding boundary changes and it could be very different at the next election. I also hope Abbott and the other embarrassments resist being side-lined and start some good old Labour infighting.

NCBBC, that is one way to look at it. The problem for any Party with an outright Parliamentary majority of less than five to ten seats, even with ten to twelve, is what happens when the Grim Reaper, severe illness or scandal come calling?
Struggling to look on the bright side this morning, if anyone in the Tory ranks is vulnerable it must be Ken Clarke and he is a strong Remainer
It’s not really possible to run a Government, under sustained pressure from an organised opposition let alone with Brexit negotiations, on a non-existent outright majority.

The “I voted for remain but am now slavishly following the will of the people” line never really rang true.
Sourbiddy and Grieve have already been doing the rounds pondering the “soft Brexit”. Brexit may well be achieved but it will be a Brexit in name only. Not quite a German province, but not an independent state either.
I was listening to Ursula von der Leyen, the German defence minister a week or so ago. She was relishing the idea that USA and UK were distancing themselves from the EU. We must be able to defend ourselves and create a European army outside NATO. The core will be some Franco-German band of warriors that is supposedly already doing good works around the globe. A Salvation Army with military hardware rather than tambourines. No they will probably want to keep the tambourines.
