This is true. No bullshit. My parents are long gone but knowing them they will not mind me relating this little story. They were quite earthy folks.
My older sister who was about 19 years old at the time brought home her new Dutch boyfriend. After introductions they set about admiring our budgie. Mum opined that the budgie could say the word fuck. After a few seconds of encouragement the budgie duly obliged and Mum nonchalantly quipped “There you are, I told you.” Big sister was not amused but -heyho- a year later the couple were married. The moral of this story is – there ain’t one. It is just -a true story. And that’s why I am like I am. Dirty minded. It’s genetic like so much else.

One of the problems with movies is that no matter how seriously they are intended, in the end they are all basically fantasies.
I’ve seen comments on forums lately to the effect that “oh, the British only escaped from Dunkirk because the French army protected them.” I’m sure this is based on the depiction in the opening scenes of this movie. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t the BEF still fighting in France weeks after Dunkirk?
Another thing that occurred to me when I saw the film was that the British soldiers in it were much like the teen-aged conscript characters of the Vietnam movies of the eighties. Well, why not? Christopher Nolan was born in 1970. Surely Britain’s professional army who joined up in the ’30s wouldn’t have been like this?
