I’m trying to work out the editorial rules for’ Today’- particularly the decision to interview people over an issue . The majority of interviews seem to be – interviewee and BBC interviewer .
But sometimes they have people from each side of an issue . But this is very rare . So rare that when I heard such an incident today I wondered why the BBC had done it .
The issue was about parents who want cannabis oil for their mentally challenged offspring . An extremely media savvy middle class mother bossing a quiet medic over her demand for NHS cannabis oil . The mother was allowed free rein and had that dangerous certainty the BBC loves .
Maybe that’s why the BBC does it – sometimes it achieves a real perversion – like the assault on Rod Liddell on Newsnight by the mentally challenged histerical Emily Maitless – with the other side of the argument letting her do his job.
I wonder if the BBC high command assents to this ? I suppose it does . But is diminishes the BBC further – if that’s possible

Brexit panic not justified, says ex-Trump adviser Stephen Vaughn
A former top trade adviser to US President Trump has told the BBC “there is a level of panic” around Brexit “that is not justified”.
Stephen Vaughn, who served as acting trade representative before becoming general counsel on trade, stressed the UK has “enormous leverage” in a potential trade deal with the US.

TR is still in a safe unit at Belmarsh and eating and exercising OK. He received mail on his first day of detention but none since (for about 27 days), the excuse for the ‘delay’ being it has to be inspected by counter terrorism officers. TR is allowed several two-hour visits a week and Ezra shares his visits with two of TR’s friends. They all got there early and were 6th in line in the holding area – I think he said there were 20+ families waiting. However, everyone else was let in first and the reason given was their group had to wait for a sniffer dog to accompany them. No sniffer dogs were involved last time Ezra visited. Consequently they missed 45mins of the slot. Ezra also had to leave early to catch his return flight but they made him wait saying he had to be accompanied OUT by three officers with three sniffer dogs. Apparently one of TR’s meetings with his lawyers was also cancelled (not sure why). TR has not heard anything from Julian Assange recently.
Ezra suspects, rightly or wrongly, that his monitoring of the situation – i.e. being an independent reporter from overseas – is stopping the authorities from taking further liberties. I think he has a point, given what happened to TR last time. Ezra has arranged another visit for next week.

Thanks for the update – I think that because the likes of Katie Hopkins has in interest and is both publicly recognised and known by POTUS – TR might – might – be less at risk of state monticated harm.
So they’ll go down the lower level of depriving him from the things ‘ normal ‘ prisoners get . And certain prison officers will have been bribed or looking for the approval of superiors to treat him and his visitors ‘ less than fairly’ .
I’m sure if they could get TR to breach prison times they would do so to get the sentence extended or use it as a mechanism to put him with enemies in the prison system .

My grasp of statistics is not good but I have been led by those who are greater experts in the field, that that sort of figure (1.4) is close to the figure of statistical insignificance.
What the BBC intended to write was the proportion per head of population. It would remove the statistical insignificance element. That adds two further interesting problems. Health is a devolved matter, so why are they (the researchers, not the BBC) including Wales in the research? Would it be that most of the Wales deaths are for very different age groups and are occupationally linked when compared to England?
And 2.5 deaths per head of population per 100,000 would be correct for only England, its current population being 55.6 million according to the ONS.
No questions asked by the BBC either on R4 or in the article.

What does GDP mean, and what does it tell us?
GDP is an important metric, and not for the reason you might think. Oxfords PPE course appears to teach its students that because government debt is measured as a ratio to GDP a quick fix is all that’s needed in order to be able to borrow more money to squander.
What does it tell us?
When GDP falls and the cowardly incompetent Tories want to borrow more money, they will indulge in yet another wave of mass immigration to provide a temporary blip in the figures.

Regarding this 0.2% gdp figure.
The way it’s being presented seems to give the impression that the gdp figure is -0.2%
If you compare this with the +0.5% for the previous quarter then the growth for the last quarter was +0.3%
The gdp shrunk by 0.2% but it is not minus 0.2% which is the impression the MSM is putting out.
Or am I wrong?
With the whole world gdp shrinking who would have thought that us leaving the eu would have that effect as it’s obvious that Brexit is the cause of the world slowdown.

EG, no, you are right. The Q2 figure is estimated for the first time at -0.2* but Q1 was a positive 0.5. As Stephie would remind everyone, back in the days when the Beeb had a good Economics Editor and she wrote a regular Blog for the web-site which was always open to comment, GDP figures are 1. a bit vague, and 2. are regularly revised by the ONS, usually no more than twice, when they think they have a better picture of actual performance. That may be some time after year end.
Then there is inflation. One of the big debates we had on Stephie’s Blog (a measure of the great value of such things, imv) is how to adjust for inflation. Another puzzle that Stephie wrote on regularly – as did Pesto, her successor in post – was the lack of productivity per UK worker compared to elsewhere in Europe and the world. There has been a considerable ‘dumbing down’ inflicted on the UK population by the powers that be at the BBC. A great shame.

I see some of you are concerned about the catastrophic drop in GDP last quarter. Don’t forget that the BBC told us that the ‘unexpected’ 0.5% growth in the previous quarter wasn’t because we were so good but because we had been stockpiling for the March ‘cliff-edge’ Brexit. Could it be that last quarter we were using up that stock so didn’t need to make so much?
Governments might like increases in GDP, that’s why they operate a taxi service in the Channel, but it is GDP per capita that tells us that we are doing better.
