Midweek Thread Wednesday 12th August 2020

The coming Friday – 14th of August marks the 75th anniversary of our victory over Japan . Let’s hope that the BBC can mark it with some level of dignity without importing its’ very own Marxist views into proceedings -And that it offers ‘thanks ‘ to those who suffered and died at the hands of the Japanese . There’s always hope .

More garbage from BBC Sport. This is the top story.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/53593465

It’s about how women aren’t given the same opportunities as men in sport, or are treated negatively.

One of the stories is headlined with ‘Men are still getting more money and there isn’t any reason for it’. I think there is a perfectly clear and valid reason for it – men’s sports attract more spectators and thus more revenue! But it never crosses the BBC’s or that athlete’s minds. They just want to continue pushing that sexism narrative.

Basically, all the article does is villainize men as people who hate women, and women as the heroes standing up to this so-called ‘oppression”. But that’s typical of the BBC, trying to show that men (especially white) are losers with no place in modern British society.

Just remember: there was an edition of Match of the Day where the entire punditry team were women, just so the BBC can continue to shove women’s sports down our throats.

Had the World Service keeping me company during the insomnia this morning.

Soapy Jon Sopel provided some ‘detailed analysis’ on the Israel/UAE normalisation of relations.

My gods, he was like a spoilt child who had his dummy removed.

The first piece of the article was decrying the deal as the Palestinians weren’t involved (Hey Jon they don’t negotiate with terrorists)….. the second part alleged it mainly for economic reasons as the two parties have the largest economies in the region, and that it was no way, in a any way considered the start of the middle east peace process.

Pathetic, utterly. The guy really needs to grow up. He just embarrasses himself.

Totally inept and useless Public Health England have fessed up to their job- creation exercise, namely over-reporting of Coronavirus deaths.

It turns out that they have knowingly been recording more weekly covid deaths than the ONS for weeks and weeks.

The new measure with a 28 day cutoff brings England into line with the rest of the UK.

Weird thing is, this now under-reports compared with the ONS. So here’s a radical idea. Why not pick a cutoff which more or less is in line with the ONS ? A 60 day cutoff seems to be about right. And instead of following, England could lead from a basis of little more than common sense.

It will of course be far too complicated to do such a thing.

    Bedtime reading.

28 days is the international standard
It is not an accurate thing
cos you might be run over by a bus 3 weeks after contracting Covid … or 5 weeks
The ONS stats rely on death certificates so would count bus deaths accurately
but they still count co-morbidity inaccurately
cos if you are riddled with cancer or heart disease and Covid is ALSO on your death certificate ..that gets counted as a Covid death.

Another metric : Excess deaths over the 5 year average, proves Covid is a real problem over normal flu etc.

But the excess death total is made of Actual Covid deaths plus the lockdown effect deaths like missed cancer operations.
So would we have been better off with almost-zero lockdown ?

      • Sluff says:

        Stew
I thought PHE’s justification was that there was no international standard. They kept quoting WHO.

And your excess deaths measure, though often mentioned, is not infallible. Many of those old folk in the care homes ( and there were a lot of them) would have died a few weeks later anyway of e..g. old age or dementia so the excess deaths are bound to slowly revert to the norm over time. Does that make the measure informative? One might say it needs a big health warning.

It appears that Sweden went with your almost-zero lockdown.
CV death rates are high there but not the highest.
Meanwhile their kids went to school and the effect on their economy was significantly reduced.

Personally I’m still suspicious of the low German death rate as a proportion of their case rate. They either have brilliant health care, able somehow to keep people alive, in which case why do we not know about it, or else the figures are somehow manipulated.

This strengthens Israel, further isolates Iran, encourages Arab diplomacy, demonstrates cooperation succeeds & violence fails, further marginalises the Palestinian leadership who are horrified. Credit to President @realDonaldTrump, @IsraeliPM Netanyahu & Crown Prince Al Nahyan.

It also shows the crooked terrorist fraudsters who lead the Palestinian Arab cause that they are increasingly alone & their people will continue to be the losers while their leaders remain fixated on lining their own pockets & annihilating the Jewish State.

By the way, when I say “encourages Arab diplomacy”, I mean more will follow in the footsteps of the UAE. This is not the end of the road by any means.

And in response to Biden claiming that the Obama admin is responsible:
In some respects the Israel-UAE rapprochement is a direct result of Obama’s pro-Iran policies which rightly put the utmost fear of disaster, destruction and defeat into the hearts of the Arab countries.

However, I’ve misplaced, unfortunately, my Bartholomew’s Atlas of the World which I bought in a bookstore in Al Khobar Saudi Arabia. Every one on the shelf had the cellophane wrapper opened and each individual Atlas removed for, ‘alteration’. The Saudi’s had gone through each publication removing any reference to Israel by black permanent pen. So, trying to change the Saudi’s mind about Israel? Good luck with that.

Most of those ‘flu’ deaths will be in winter, of course, although the norovirus (winter vomiting) has a summer equivalent and other bird-induced viruses (also coronaviruses) can nail anyone at anytime. Seem to recall a particularly bad Scottish hospital outbreak in the past.

It isn’t the Govt running these things – we (they) may be paying for it. Same as the Govt didn’t do the A level moderation but gets blamed, wasn’t responsible for PPE or pandemic planning but gets blamed, it wasn’t the Govt who counted corona deaths or sent patients from NHS to care homes, the testing is also not run by the Govt..

it really is too easy just to blame the Govt in all instances when the ‘blame’ lies elsewhere

That said – I think the current handling of CV lockdowns and air corridors and the illegal immigrants is something directly linked to the Govt, for which they should take responsibility

What I have noticed is the BBC constantly use the ‘Govt should have’ angle when it should be saying – the NHS should have, PH England should have, the teachers and Unions should have, Ofqual should have…

    Lest we forget BREXIT

Ben Habib warns … despite Michael Gove’s optimism there is no deal in sight and the government has made no proper positive plans for a no-deal outcome. In fact, the opposite is being done; preparations are being made to implement the NIP with customs controls across the Irish Sea. It would be understating the extent of the Prime Minister’s failure to say that, with this border, he would not be fulfilling his manifesto pledges. It is self-evident that he has observed virtually all his Brexit promises in the breach. But these transgressions pale by comparison to the split he is about to institute down the middle of the British Isles. There is no example in history of a country voluntarily putting a border down its own middle with part of it being in another jurisdiction.

Taking account of all that has gone before since Boris Johnson became Prime Minister it must now be a racing certainty that a fudged trade deal will be done with the EU that binds the rest of the UK into EU laws and other things besides. All that apparently remains to be determined is the extent of the sell-out.

Even though I have warned relentlessly about the threats to the UK of the Prime Minister’s deal, I had hoped against hope Boris Johnson would rise to the occasion and pull a rabbit out of the hat. He has thus far flunked every opportunity to do so.

Unless the Prime Minister gets a grip of this situation virtually instantly, the Conservative Party, in its pursuit of power, will deliver Brexit in name only. And the cost of this pyrrhic victory will be the end of the United Kingdom.

    Hahahaha.

The government announce new quarantine rules for those returning from France.

You can sense the elation in the BBC news room.
Surely there will be chaos. They hope so, don’t they ?

So they despatch some reporter to Calais.
She, for it is of course a she though strangely white, clearly hopes to report on massive queues, gridlocked roads, and huge levels of frustration.

Except……..that there were no queues and everything was flowing freely !!!!!!!

    Egg clearly on face.
    Hahahahahaha.

and if said female BBC reporter does not return before 4 a.m., she will have to go into quarantine for 14 days.

Not a problem for a Beeboid: full pay courtesy of the BBC .. er … the Licence Fee taxpayer.

The thing is, if they want to be accurate, the junta wants to impose a quattordici giorni.

And if we don’t oppose this tyranny, the next logical progression is that these demons will come to our homes and kick us out.

      Just be warned.

I hope the racist bbc are first to experience this form of cultural appropriation.

………but to restore maximum doom and gloom.

    1. BBC still droning on about the unfairness of A levels. Shock. horror. Some people didn’t get their grades.
    2. BBC reports as bad news that the UK is stockpiling coronavirus potential vaccines (though we don’t know whether any of them will work) . It’s so unfair, the BBC informs us. Under-developed countries might miss out.

    Yawn.

It has been one long whinge-athon on the BBC on R4 today. I couldn’t bear to listen anymore after Woman’s Hour. I did think about listening to TWatO.

      Then I thought … nah.

You did well to miss it! Mark Mardell is clearly determined to snatch the trophy for the most biased BBC presenter from Emily Maitlis.

    Totally useless BBC.
    Totally useless wokeism.

    Rugby is back.
But all the BBC are interested in is that Harlequins will ‘take the knee’ before kick off.

The report ends with Clive Myrie saying the reporter is ‘from Twickenham’. Since there was footage of Twickenham stadium most people would assume he is referring to the National Stadium. But Harlequins play at The Stoop. Which happens to be in Twickenham but is not ‘Twickenham’.

There is something funny going on with the Covid-19 infection figures from Public Health (England). https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51768274 . I find myself wondering if the Civil Servants there are ‘working to rule’ or somesuch obstructive-ness having had a ticking-off from the PM and/or SecState Health and/or the public.

For the fourth day now, they have only released updates every other day. Previously it was a daily update, sometimes late but daily, with a couple of exceptions, regular as clockwork since the end of March or start of April.

Another funny thing: the latest increase for two days has been 20. The previous increase figure, for two days released on 12th August was also 20.

The figures for today are out.
11 deaths under the new regime, though giving people only 28 days to get tested and then die seems pretty harsh.

What should worry us is the daily case rate of 1440. That’s quite a way up and part of a trend. Not cataclysmic but stand by for some domestic lockdown measures if our heroes at NHS Test and Trace cannot get their public sector centralised, bureaucratic act together. It wouldn’t be the first time, would it?

The End of the Thread Rant . – this is not about the BBC so bare with me . This is about quarantine .

I’ve just spent a month in Spain – on the South Coast . It’s hot and empty . Everyone is wearing a mask – even on the beach – and I swear to god I saw someone in the sea wearing a mask .

The Spanish are no good at distancing . Shops are a nightmare to maintain distance – their guard is down .

I was lucky enough to be able to adjust my return travel plans so 2 weeks turned into 4 .i hoped the insane 14 days might be dropped to 7 – but no. I went out before the quarantine restriction was imposed .

Eventually as I watched BA flights drying up – coupled with a Worstening number of reported infections I decided to come back .

BA is playing dirty . They collapse 5 or more daily August flights into London into just one . And for those needing a ticket – not cheap . So a 90% full plane still resulted . I complained to BA because my flight had been cancelled and changed 4 times – but the reply was ‘tough ‘.

And Heathrow ? A disgusting chaotic mess . No social distancing at border control – border farce as dumb as at the channel – men in suits with Heathrow IDs standing well away watching hundreds – maybe a thousand people waiting to get through passport control – little hygiene or encouragement to clean .

And quarantine – fill in the 4 page online form . No sign of any checking at arrivals – nothing – no random checks – no temperature checks – just the same as the last time I did the trip – in April .

And now maybe hundreds of thousands more will be entering quarantine coming back from France , Belgium , Holland and god knows where .

Is the quarantine law even remotely enforceable ? No .
And such a law then becomes a joke – like much of the government response – a pee poor shambles .

Meanwhile – I’m under house arrest for another 13 days . I read the regulations . I can go out to get basic groceries but that’s it .

But if you look at the exemptions you ll find the bubble in exempt and doesn’t get or spread covid -that includes BBC staff ….

Tonight – Friday – the telegraph says SAGE recommended tests on arrival 2 months ago – yet all through the time from lockdown nothing was done . It’s lucky the red Tories have another 3 years – otherwise I reckon they’d be gone .
