Midweek Thread 17th February 2021

The BBC has decided that the mental health of young people is in jeopardy – if they are exposed to the sort of stuff the Far Left Biased BBC puts out is it any surprise ? The constant negativity about the collective plight of our country can’t be any help in reducing the stress of staying indoors . Further – where is the humour ? Where is the fun ? Repeated (green) stories of the End of The World targeted at the Young just won’t help.

any way – for believers -today is the beginning of Lent and Hope .

Mrs ND was watching Film4 a few nights ago I was reading a book and listening to some podcasts I did watch as the adverts come on and manged to see three inter racial couples in one of the breaks!

I’m watching in anticipation of seeing a whole ad break just with mixed race couples…the way things are going I fear that day is not far away.

A quick mention for Hoseasons who have gone beyond the call of duty and have two different such couples in just one ad.

WHAT DO THESE CHARTS SHOW this appears below the Covid stats https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51768274

Cases are people who have tested positive for coronavirus. Public health bodies may occasionally revise their case numbers. Case rate by age only available for England. *The “average area” means the middle ranking council or local government district when ranked by cases per 100,000 people.
The case rate chart shows how many people have tested positive each day for every 100,000 people in that area. The dark blue line shows the average daily rate over the past seven days. This average helps to show whether cases are rising or falling. The case rate by age chart shows how many people have tested positive in each age group per 100,000 people. Steeper rises in older age groups are of more concern because older people are more likely to be badly affected by the virus and are more likely to need hospital care. The case rate by age shows a rate. This means the values for the two age groups cannot be added together to get the overall case rate in each area.
Source: UK public health bodies – updated weekdays.
Vaccines are data for first doses by nation only.
Source: gov.uk dashboard – updated weekdays.
Deaths are where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. The chart shows the number of deaths recorded each week per 100,000 people in that area. Covid deaths are in red, other deaths are in grey. The average is the monthly average of deaths in the last five years between 2014-2019. This average will continue to be used in 2021. Recording of deaths over Christmas and New Year was affected by the bank holidays – trends should be treated with caution.
Source: ONS, NRS and NISRA – data updated weekly.

Is the sentence I have highlighted in bold and italic correct? I would have said that is the median figure, not the average. Anything by the BBC should be treated with caution.

    Probably.

    • StewGreen says:

Dunno what to make of the noisy page

The sentence is the MEDIAN AVERAGE
It is the correct way of doing it
      they wrote “average” that’s OK
It was over 450 and maybe 00 before that
so all areas are well down

      There some complicating factors
like before cases were counted in the hospital, not where you lived
So areas with no hospitals got low counts.

Do London areas have low counts cos many people have left and are living at there secondhome/parents house ? etc.

    Local Covid report
    I met a teacher 10 days ago
She said of the 340 kids at the school
    190 are there these days
.. I suppose a lot of jobs around here are keyworker jobs
I asked if anyone had had it at the school
“one male teacher had it over Christmas, but got over it and was back over it and was back teaching.

Then today the guy in front of me in the shop queue was telling the girl that he’d just got over Covid
By coincidence her family is the only one in the village I know that had it, tho she says one of the other staff had it a long time ago.
The guy today said it just came out of the air to him , cos none of the six people he’d been with in the previous week had had it.
And strangely neither his wife or son caught it off him.
    “worst flu ever” he said.

Someone somewhere must have a detailed map of cases and knows some patterns. It just cannot be everywhere

Stew, amazing coincidence, see my post above yours. That BBC web-page can be viewed daily and shows the change. I monitor some different areas regularly. You can put in your post-code and check your area as well as others.

I am concerned that the stats evidence has been changed several times. For example we used to have the stats for the whole of rural Kent (ie. non metropolitan Kent) available in one total. But then the goalposts were changed. I think they may have changed again with some updating being done every day during the week but the deaths are still a weekly figure.

Personal anecdote Dept.: Heard on the grapevine that Canterbury Sorting Office had a postie who died recently. I know of another person in Essex who died from Covid. Was said to be ‘big’ (ie weighty) but fit. That last was middle of last year. I know of two others who died but probably caught Covid in hospital; one in 90s the other in 80s with other health problems. Wife of one of those caught Covid from hubby but recovered, as had hubby until he went back for another health problem.

Much was made by the BBC of Anne Longfield’s last day at work as Commissioner for Children for England and the criticism that she was to make of HMG. I thought a little independent journalism was justified. How much is the lady paid and how many staff does she have?

I did not find it easy to get an idea of her salary. A straight search did not reveal it. At a guess it is circa £100,000. Or more.

On the staff front, her office comprises or did comprise 29 people! Don’t know how many are part time, how many are full time. Let’s assume all are full-time. Average pay in the UK is now c£26,000. There goes three-quarters of a million. Median pay (am less up-to-date on that) is or was c£33,000. In which case there goes a million on pay alone, almost, before Anne is paid. Then there is the building rent and other expenses.

And that is just for England. I do not know if rUK has followed suit and that Scotland, Wales & NI have their own Commissioners with proprtionally smaller set-ups.

    Value for money?

There are plenty of people who will criticise the Government for free, whichever political Party is in power.

Free speech – Cancel Culture and votes for sixteen yearolds in Taffland, what’s going on?
IMHO and only IMHO, Marxist lecturers are at work in our universities disseminating their doctrine to their gullible students. These indoctrinated students then leave ‘Yoonee’ and in turn, teach their little charges in the schools where they have become teachers. This is where all our snowflakes, extinction rebellion and BLM cherubs come from that are running round pulling our historic statues down and cancelling anyone that holds a different opinion. They dis. our heritage and rundown the nation that feeds them.

It will get worse before it gets better, because the Welsh Assembly are moving to get the voting age down to sixteen. Is this in hope that the little cherubs will vote for the lefty politicians sitting there?
All this brainwashing suites, and is supported by Al Beeb.

The only hope is that the parents of these little cherubs ‘wise up’ and send them out to get a real job and make some money and learn about real life.
Where, who and why, are so many kids going to ‘Yoonee’?
As to votes for kids at sixteen? I would not trust my sixteen year old to clean his bedroom let alone have a vote.

What’s a Labour leader to do? The formerly forensic Sir Keir’s leadership is on the downward slide. All he can think to do is to make some platitudinous murmurings that make the frontpage of the mildly Tory Telegraph: ‘Starmer calls for end to “unequal economy”‘ – this lame effort being symptomatic of his problem – the Tory government has all but ended the entire bloody economy and his prior interjections and further lockdown suggestions would kill it for good.

Could Starmer realistically claim the NHS needs protection from the nasty Tories? In fact elderly patients, chucked out of hospitals and relegated to die in ill-equiped carehomes, needed protection from the Tories love and protection of the NHS.

Sufferers of just about any malady except Wuhan Flu have the same problem. The Tory’s devotion to the institution and payroll of the NHS is so great there’s hardly a thought for the patients.

Don’t fret about it Sir Keir, there are now so many institutional and cultural leftists in our elites that there’s really no need for a mass socialist political party.

The culture war against Britishness is coming along nicely and is set to win without you.

Museum “out of date”‘ (Times) ‘The British Museum needs a complete rebulid, including giving the Elgin Marbles back to Athens and giving Africa greater prominence, Sir Anthony Gormley said

Look at your own career Sir Keir, you were a young socialist activist and yet you get yourself appointed Director of Public Prosecutions.

The Guardian is doing its best but there’s some really heavy lifting required: ‘Tory policy meant virus hit UK hard, says Starmer

I’m equally dubious of the imagined causal link suggested in this Guardian headline: ‘Dirty air may have big impact on fertility

I guess soon we’ll see how the young chaps fair with the fairer sex cruising about in their battery cars. At least the claim – oh no, I’ve run out of juice luv, there’s not a chargeing point for miles, we’ll have to spend the night parked here – will now be rather more plausible.

The Guardian and of course its broadcast wing – the BBC – is the playground and battleground for the left to hash out the rules of their victim group top trumps: ‘BBC row. Mass protest over “hostile” interview of Muslim leader‘ – for non-licence-payers and those not members of the ummah, this is the flashpoint where the first woman gets appointed to some islamic thing and the female BBC interviewer reading from her wammin script presses the question how many female imams are there? – just a little too hard for comfort. In the words of the Kaiser Chiefs, I predict a riot… or at least a Twitter storm.

Suck it up, muslims. The BBC reflexively promotes female vicars, priests and rabbis. Better brace yourselves, the Beeb will soon be pushing gay and trans imams on you. We’ll see how that goes?

Another one from the Guardian and credit where credit is due, one does have to applaud the Guardianistas for highlighting inflation on their front page: ‘Food and furniture push up inflation‘ – oddly enough the globally orientated Financial Times could not be bothered over UK price rises as it lionises the new man in Italy: ‘Italy’s reformation. Draghi outlines path for regaining economic health‘ – paraphrasing David Cameron’s roasting of Tony Blair – one remembers when Emmanuel Macron was the euro elite’s future.

I’m getting interested in and watching out for this thing termed shrinkflation – it’s where, for example, your Mars Bar remains at the same price but gets smaller.

    TOADY Watch #1 – the thought landing in a TOADY Editor’s brain in 3, 2, 1 ….

Crashed. Oh dear. Another failure. Failure to connect the dots. Not the failure to land on Mars. One does wonder what the TOADY Editors (and there are lots of them) do for their money. Topics were calls for the new coal mine in Cumbria to be cancelled by HMG because of Climate Change, the difficulties of landing a robot spaceship on Mars together with the possibility of humans living there and the need for jobs in the north of England and a way of paying off the debts created due to the Pandemic.

Well, let’s create lots of jobs and Climate Change emissions going up into space (isn’t that UP and therefore in the north of England?) instead of having a nasty Global Warming coking coal mine, essential for steel production, in the north of England. Before 8 a.m., Labour’s Anneliese Dodds was saying a lot without meaning anything but the summary boils down to “HMG should keep on giving out free money now that they have discovered Labour’s Magic Money Tree.”

Neither the Editors, the Producer or the Presenters could connect the dots ……. oh dear.

I propose that anyone who actually believes that the vaccine puts a tracker in your body so the government can monitor you wherever you go be sent to a country full of like-minded people where they will not appear to be centuries behind the rest of the world. For some reason, the BBC seem to think it is entirely acceptable to put pictures in an article which are absolutely not about that story. For example, a classroom with 3 girls in the foreground and at least one is black for any story about education.
They will say they are just for atmosphere – but every single one has been specifically chosen to subliminally push their woke agenda. It’s politcally motivated brainwashing and entirely unethical.

‘Islamo-Leftism is gangrening society as a whole and that universitiy is not impermeable…..a minority of lecturers are using their titles and aura to see everything through the prism of their desire to divide…….there is a need to comb through research, notably in the domain of post-colonial studies, to distinguish what harks from academic research and what harms from activism and opinion’

I paraphrase from an article in the Telegraph this morning by Henry Samuel which quoted the French higher education minister. She is launching a study with the implication is that leftist lecturers in France turn a blind eye to Islamism and refuse to criticise radical Islam because of perceived persecution of French Muslims.

Apparently ‘Islamo-gauchism’ was a term coined about 20 years ago. Defined by its author as a ‘militant alliance’ between Leftists and ‘Islamists of various persuasions’

Perish the though that such a study and plain speaking could happen over here. We just open the doors and let everyone in, then accuse the existing population of racism.

The media are following this Facebook versus Australia one closely with the bBbc offering the usual, especially the “typical” Aussies asked for their opinion.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-56107028

The expected bBbc journalistic standards remain, for example,

“Google has threatened to remove its search engine from Australia if the proposed law is passed.
But Google has now said it has agreed to pay Mr Murdochs News Corp for content from news sites across its media empire.” ( I had to add the full stop)

So it’s just your Facebook friends then bBbc, attempting to intimidate and to influence an elected national government. We’ve seen this before haven’t we?

It looks like the Australians are going to do the right thing here and pass the proposed legislation.
What I want to know is how many people actually get their news from Facebook? Don’t the vast majority of people of all generations get their news from dedicated news sites?
How has it become anything more than a place to share pictures of new couples, cars and cups of coffee and to check what ex-girlfriends look like now? It’s really just a platform for people to subtly boast, to say “look where I am and what I’ve got now”. Surely Instagram does this better?

I have three teenage daughters, all still at school. None of them use Facebook or have Facebook accounts, nor do any of their friends.

Much like the bBbc I think that it’s starting to become rather irrelevant, but as it is with the ideological and morally identical bBbc, the arrogance and vanity of Facebook, exposed to all once more through this, just doesn’t allow it to realise it yet.

In the thick of a job here, but Facebook and Texas wind turbines is a story I aim to get involved in when I can.

A site I work with had a post pulled by FB for passing on ‘misinformation’. This was linking a site in the US covering this story.

At first glance they seem to be basing this on an image used to accompany that is not Texas but Norway, with a helicopter deicing blades.

Given BBC uses US Getty Images of just about anything to illustrate stories here, the selective precedent being set seems… ‘impressive’.

As is using Bill Gates as the God of Green in complement.

Billionaire tech guys deciding what is to be seen, or not, selectively, is a real concern.

I agree inaccuracy needs calling out, but Mark Zuckerberg tasking minions to censor on a variable basis is on par with BBC Fact Checking unit asking for examples of stuff but only running what suits and ignoring what does not.

Executives at News UK TV, privately play down comparisons to Fox.
Unlike GB News, which is an old-fashioned broadcasting channel, Mr. Murdoch is planning a less costly streaming service, akin to Netflix or Now TV, to take advantage of that growing market.

The service, which is to begin a low-key rollout in April, will promote Mr. Murdoch’s stable of British media properties, from The Sun, a mass-market tabloid, and The Times, an upmarket broadsheet, to Talk Radio, which offers Rush Limbaugh-style commentary. All skew to the right.

What the article says about the BBC
“It is at least plausible to argue that the BBC is seen as being institutionally left of center,” said Simon Jenkins, a columnist for The Guardian.
“To that extent, it is plausible to say there is room for something that is right of center.”

The BBC’s reputation did suffer during Brexit, with critics saying it gave too much time to those who opposed leaving the European Union.
But it has rebounded during the pandemic, its round-the-clock coverage *helping to unite the country* (ha ha).

Politically, too, right-wing news may have missed its moment. After Mr. Johnson won a landslide victory, his Conservative allies *began* a campaign to strip the BBC of its public funding.
But the health crisis has taken much of the air out of those efforts. (BS)

“These ventures were always planned for a time when the BBC’s grip on the news agenda would have been loosened, if not diminished,” said Claire Enders, a London-based media analyst. “Things have changed radically.” (BS)

Once the pandemic recedes, some media experts predict that the culture-war battles that divided Britons during Brexit will resurface.
If immigration and populism are less resonant, new tempests will erupt over issues like “woke” culture, a term that Mr. Neil brandished in his defense of GB News

“We’re seeing the politics of resentment, which are often driven by older white men who are right wing,”
said Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, director of the Reuters Institute

#1 To even suggest that Murdoch/Fox News would be a “right of center“ BBC is beyond preposterous. The venom Murdoch has spewed into into the political discussion in the US should be a warning sign

#2 Very few know about this, but the BBC is sworn to uphold the Union/United Kingdom, which means London, and England.
Not only that, but it is as if the Tory government write all the news stories, bashing opposition parties, and selectively ignoring their huge faults, like the shambles of Brexit, and the deadly Covid response.
        ..
#3 The BBC Is not left or right it is centrist and unbiased. It’s popularity won’t wain…….
        .
#4 Mr. Murdoch’s media empire has done substantial damage to American democracy. The British will pay a similar price if they allow …
        ..
#5 What the right now calls “cancel culture” is really, to a large extent, the rest of us just shutting off the spigot of lies and telling the shameless liars to please shut up.
        ..
#6 The BBC of course is what news should be, and in fact used to be her in the US.

Am I missing something here?!? The photo at the top of the article showing the flyer for the event says “Pro-black and anti-gay?”. How can anti-gay be a celebration of LGBT?

whats worse is the BBC’s facvourite Far-left group had something to say – spewing fictional information in the article with no evidence or facts to back up any of the statements.

      piece from the article below:

      ‘Spread hate’
Patrik Hermansson, of Hope Not Hate, said the anti-racism group had seen a “rise” in attacks on Zoom events.

“We see invite links to meetings being shared by far-right accounts on social media and in chat rooms,” he told BBC News.

“And people are urged to join and disrupt or spread hate.”

Stonewall head of media Jeffrey Ingold said: “It’s vital that tech platforms and universities work together to improve online safety measures and deal with all incidents seriously and swiftly to make clear that anti-LGBT+ and racist abuse online will not be tolerated.”
