If this all seems odd, then consider how Britain actually records people who come in and out of the country. Until the pandemic, we did so by hiring people to stand around asking random travellers, as the BBC explained.

For 362 days a year, IPS staff leap in front of travellers at 19 airports, eight ports and the Channel Tunnel rail link. They ask them for a bit of their life story: where they’re from, why they’re in the UK and how long they might be staying.

Up to 800,000 people a year take part and about 250,000 of those results are put through the statistical mixer to come up with an estimate for the number of people either arriving to live in the UK, or leaving the UK for at least a year – the internationally-agreed definition of a long-term migrant.

But the IPS doesn’t cover all the ports, all of the time. In Dover there are up to 51 ferry arrivals a day – and the IPS only covers four days’ worth of them over an entire year. The nationwide sample works out at just over 1 per cent of Heathrow’s annual traffic of 78 million people.

‘Ignore whatever Home Secretaries and NGOs say about deportations: not only do we not look for overstayers, we often don’t know they exist. In the same time period 201,000 different people were picked up on exit checks who we didn’t know were actually here until they flew out.’

As one of the smartest Twitter accounts explains, Britain is unusual in:

‘not having an ID system. There is no central register of residents or citizens. People prove their identity through random documents (driving licences, utility bills), and businesses check against incomplete databases (especially credit rating agencies). The UK does not systematically collect data on people entering and leaving the country. Many regular border crossings aren’t centrally recorded. To be clear: unless you fly in, it’s perfectly possible to cross the British border undetected. This is particularly true of sea and rail. A Blair-era attempt to fix this (eBorders) was abandoned in 2014. The British government is simply uninterested in the problem.

On a statistical level, there is even more confusion. The Office for National Statistics uses an incredibly dated methodology to estimate net immigration: standing at the airport asking random travellers if they plan to stay in the UK… The ONS write at length defending their methods, but underlying it is the assumption that people will reply accurately to a letter from the government asking them to list everyone living at an address. Which in modern Britain just isn’t plausible. Housing and immigration policy give many people in the UK a strong incentive to misrepresent their residency, in a way that can only be picked up on anecdotally, or when forced into the open by a freak event.’

How is ‘today ‘ today ? I really can’t listen any more – the same approved tune .. im guessing they’ll role Andrew dilnott out to rage at the latest scheme to avoid dealing with social ( elderly ) care .
The term ‘social care ‘ sounds so ‘clinical’ doesn’t it ? But if you said ‘elderly care ‘ people might notice a bit more and demand proper cover .
So there is to be another ‘inquiry ‘ and that won’t report until 2028 ? Just in time to be buried at the next election . Start again – inquiry – reports in 2032? Just in time for the 2034? Election ….

These rates have not been changed in years, make that decades.
As usual, anyone with the temerity to have held down a decent job, and saved for their retirement, gets taken to the cleaners. The feckless meanwhile, those who choose not to work or save, or dare I mention illegal asylum seekers and legal immigrants who do not even speak English, get the lot. And it’s all dressed up as a ‘caring’ society, helping ‘those most in need’.
It’s disgusting. The socialist redistribution of wealth gone mad.

This morning’s left-leaning i news ‘weather’ report: ‘Stay inside’ warning as health agency warns of freezing snow

    Wrong type of snow?

As opposed to some of that old-fashioned luke warm mild snow we used to get?

Mr AsI envisages a broader, less Soviet bolshevik, more akin to some NHS/BBC/Met Office version of our present theraputic State

Do not go out at night… or morning, NHS warns… warnings of a rise in deaths as temperatures drop below zero today (Telegraph) – but global warming is a bad thing, because…?

Remember how your old mum used to remind you not to venture out in January without your scarf and most importantly your winter vest on?

Thermal underwear is officially cool (Telegraph)

NHS and UK Health Security Agency urges people to… keep active and wear several layers of clothing (Telegraph) – nice to see multiple health agencies doubling up on the advice and in competition for our attention. We wouldn’t want to think there were a monopoly of official messaging. I’m guessing this stay at home advice comes from a public sector busy WFH on our behalf.

Have you ever used a kill switch to get your car back?

The kill switch could be automatically activated if the vehicle entered a geo-fenced area or used excessive speed in a built-up area. Never imagined in a month of Sundays I would be pushing this idea!

As an alternative the car could play Val Doonican songs if it detected foul-play.

Another – I wasted my money and want compensation – story

Basically BBC feeling sorry for owners, who blindly bought something, but as usual not telling the story properly.

Couldn’t afford the increase in annual ground rent from

So ends up selling it for £5000 after a year.

‘She added: “It just broke my heart. I’m devastated that at 65 years of age I’m reduced to using a food bank.’

Story doesn’t make sense, £5000 buys a lot of food…

‘…worked as a carer before ill health forced her to stop, and does not yet receive a pension’

So the story is she can’t access benefits? Or what
    BBC doesn’t bother telling us.

    https://www.poynter.org/reporting-editing/2025/terrorist-attack-new-orleans-boubon-street/
When should journalists use the word ‘terrorism?’

Even when news organizations, like the BBC, use guidelines similar to the AP’s standard, they come under attack for not using the word “terrorist” when describing activities like the Hamas attacks in Israel. In reporting about the criticism, the BBC wrote, “Veteran BBC foreign correspondent John Simpson said, ‘calling someone a terrorist means you’re taking sides.”’ The article continued,

A BBC spokesperson said, “We always take our use of language very seriously. Anyone watching or listening to our coverage will hear the word ‘terrorist’ used many times – we attribute it to those who are using it, for example, the UK Government.”

Avoid phrases that might illicit admiration for the attacker such as “mastermind behind the attack” or calling an attack “sophisticated.”

I never felt an old guy in Qatar sending young druggies to Israel to kill babies and rape women were either.

    Especially when karma catches up.

An opinion piece, and I can’t disagree. But you’ll never hear it from the bbc mob feeling the weight of Starmers balls on their collective tongues:

“Labour has declared war on Britain – and it’s winning!

I’ve seen some bad governments in my time, but Keir Starmer’s Labour is on a different level. It seems to be on a mission to destroy the UK.

Britons are famously cynical about their politicians but most of us assume they’re broadly trying to do their best for the country.

    Not this lot.

The only way I can sensibly explain Keir Starmer’s strategy is to assume Labour is working to destroy us. Then it all fits into place.

Take Energy Secretary Ed Miliband. His energy policy is like a death ray aimed at the UK economy.

For decades, Treasury coffers have been boosted by North Sea oil and gas revenues. Without them, we’d be even poorer than we already are.

    So what does Miliband do?

Ban new oil and gas drilling. This will blow a hole in the UK’s bottom line, costing us billions and destroying hundreds of thousands of jobs.
Any oil and gas companies daft enough to remain will be annihilated by windfall taxes. Donald Trump is watching and can’t believe his eyes.
Could you imagine Trump doing that to the US? He wouldn’t, because he wants to make America great again, whereas Labour is working to make the UK even grimmer.
If you wanted to sabotage an economy, what better way than making it dependent on foreign imports and unreliable renewables?
Double agent Miliband couldn’t think of one. Otherwise he’d be doing it.

Then there’s Rachel Reeves. If this was a James Bond movie, I’d be convinced she was secretly in the pay of Spectre.
How else could you explain her devious plot to cripple the UK? As Chancellor, she’s supposed to make the economy grow.
Instead she torpedoed UK confidence with talk of that £22billion black hole. Instantly, the economy flatlined. Then she gave us four months to sweat on her horror Budget, which turned out to be even worse than imagined.

It will destroy jobs, businesses and livelihoods. She might has well have parked a Tesla Cybertruck outside the London Stock Exchange.

Although I probably shouldn’t give her ideas.

The economy is now shrinking. We could be in recession by March. Nice work, Agent Reeves, as they say at Spectre headquarters.

Labour’s inheritance tax raid on family farms also threatens the nation’s food security. Any remaining productive land will be buried by Miliband’s army of solar farms.

That will leave us even more dependent on imported food too. It’s like a Bond villain’s crazy masterplan, except this one looks likely to work.”

The Economist Like a bbc piece, anti alcohol etc

“For most of the post-war period crime, alcoholism, drugs and pregnancy were all rising among the young. And then at some point it stopped. The generations now ageing disgracefully were disgraceful in youth, and in middle age. If they’re behaving badly now, there is really not much to be done about it. If they choose to frolic at toga parties, no one will stop them. Except, ultimately, time.”

TWatO Watch #1 – The World at One is concerned, as was TOADY before it …

… that BBC presenters might be hit by higher taxes. Please correct me if I am wrong but I recall that early in Boris Johnson’s Premiership he had a solution for elderly adult care which was a progressive system of taxation increasing National Insurance for those on high salaries and those paying the least would be on Minimum Wage. Do I recall correctly that the Labour Party voted against along with the Scottish Nationalists and the Liberals.

It was called regressive at the time although I seem to recall that at BBC Presenter earning £350,000 p.a. such as Nick Robinson or Huw Edwards would pay much more than someone on Minimum Wage. That is a progressive system of taxation, not regressive. Now Labour claim they have a solution which will include a National Commission and ‘kick the can down the road’ a few more years.

I’m not sure about that Fed.

I don’t think TTK cares one bit if he has public support. He thinks he is in power for the next few years and can railroad whatever he wants. All his lackies are as far-left as he is and we’ve seen what they do if the Right protest. They are all in prison.

We are living in a police state. We have only had a taste of what Starmer will do to eradicate the opposition. The only way he will ever give up power is if he is forcibly removed.

He is a Nazi fascist. I do wonder how far the BBC will go before they realise what a terrible mistake they have made.

A very good point there Zephir is that good Muslim men in gangs raping those they detest (such as white girls wearing makeup and showing skin) is much, much more than simple rape.

And that Islamic attitude to those who do not live by their rules applies to everything. Not just young girls. Any of us could be treated with the same disgust because they view us as infidels. That is the motive for all these terrorist murders.

And that is why those who protect them utterly disgust me. They are prepared to turn a blind eye to all of it because their own anti-Right agenda is more important.
