Hope of end to ‘dark chapter’ with Israel-Hamas ceasefire – claims the Guardian top headline. So far so neutral.
Their big bold frontpage photo however focuses on: Celebrations in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza strip (Photocredit Ramadan Abed/Reuters) – a pic of a crowd of some random children, a couple of questionable moustached blokes and the familar headscarf-bedecked ululating women (HM the Queen Elizabeth was our last truly British woman to wear such headgear on a regular basis and as far as I know she never ululated – maybe when she had a winner at Ascot?)
What, no headline mention of the hostages? Joy and fear Exhausted Palestinians hardly dare believe – runs the Graun’s second frontpage headline report on the ceasefire news – so we can see where their sympathies lie.
We may think it a big story that the Israeli hostages (or their bodies) may be coming home but at least the Guardian is back home where it belongs – top of the gynaeceum that is BBC news staff’s picks for their online print press cover page line-up.
In case you were wondering, BBC news online features a pic of similarly celebratory Gazans to that of the Guardian as their top choice. All blokes this time with one with the old red white green and black flag worn wrapped around his head as a face mask.
We’ve all seen classic images of VE Day and VJ Day with people jumping into fountains and kissing sailors in Times Square. Some waving the union jack or the stars and stripes – they never felt the need to wrap those national banners around their faces.
Jeremy Bowen’s column goes as far as to illustrate some arab chap waving a big Palestinian flag in each hand.
The formerly patriotic Times of London splits the difference, so to speak: Ceasefire joy on both sides – illustrated by side by side cover page pics of clebration in Gaza and Tel Aviv.
A similar, somewhat studied, neutrality is represented by the Financial Times – two side by side photos – a Palestinian lad doing the ‘V’ sign next to a photo of what appear to be Israeli anti-war protesters.

The book he refers to is Easy Meat. He did an excellent job of trying to expose the gangs.
During the course of some legal research I did a while ago I asked about Court transcripts. It’s a rather arcane fact that Court proceedings are open to the public and you can attend and witness and take whatever notes you want and that’s it. Journalists do just this of course. However, recording sound or video of proceedings is forbidden for some reason. Solicitors representing clients can be seen writing down every word, it’s all a bit old fashioned.
I’m reminded of my forays into local government accounts … You are legally entitled to have sight of the council’s accounts – just not copies or photos of the same and you have to attend in person….
