Having overseen waves of migration since the 1960s, Sweden has long styled itself as a humanitarian superpower, and been held up by outsiders as an idyll of peace and prosperity.
Now, that vision lies in tatters. The country is in the grip of a deadly gang crime epidemic, fuelled by ethnic gangs who regularly hire teenagers to gun down their rivals.
Courtesy of so-called “murder ads” posted on social media, offering payment of up to £80,000 to carry out hits, children as young as 13 are taking up arms.
Few are as well versed in the topic as Swedish journalist Diamant Salihu – a migrant himself from Kosovo.
When I spoke to him this week, he recounted settling in the country aged eight, when new arrivals such as his family mixed freely with college-educated Swedes.
But now, he said, the picture is very different. Despite officials’ efforts, Sweden today is a country of “parallel societies”.
“Society has become much more segregated,” Salihu told me. “Swedes welcome people from every corner of the world, but don’t actually want to live with them as neighbours.”
He explained how gang crime has thrived amid these growing cracks in Sweden’s fracturing multicultural model – claiming hundreds of lives in recent years – and suggested what we in Britain might learn to avoid the same fate.

China has dismissed reports it bugged the African Union (AU) headquarters as “preposterous”.
Kuang Weilin, the Chinese ambassador to the AU, told reporters in Ethiopia the “absurd” claim in France’s Le Monde was “very difficult to understand”.

In 2013, only 10% of vet practices in the UK were owned by large corporate groups. Now that figure stands at 60%.
Bills for pet owners have risen as corporate ownership has increased – by more than 60% between 2015 and 2023, figures from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) show. This is almost double the rate of inflation or the increase in vet salaries over that time.
Once they nudged the prices up so people HAD to get pet health insurance, the gates to corporate profit were opened.
The prices at our local vet became ridiculous. It was 30 quid minimum no matter what you went in for. I feel sorry for pensioners who can’t afford it but whose pets are their companions.
This is what ‘globalisation’ means to me. Big players set the rules and the managers only performance criteria is profit. Just like happened to banks.
Indeed John C. We are currently on our fifth cocker spaniel in the past 40 years. Vet charges have gone through the roof especially our one. Years back ours was run single handedly by a vet who lived down the road from us. Sadly he died of cancer and his practice was taken over by a conglomerate and although the care is excellent the costs are eye watering. Even having insurance is no great help since they never pay out the full cost of any procedure and you have to pay the difference. Our last dog had two ops last year which cost 5K and even with insurance we still had to pay £1000. Insurance was costing £100 per month. We have a new puppy but instead of insurance we put aside some money monthly into another account which we will use. Works out cheaper than insurance.
Why doesn’t the BBC ask the underpessure vets who are as usual conveniently anonymous, eg “Adam”, why he doesn’t quit and go work someplace else, set up his own little practice, instead of crying he’s under pressure to rip customers off.

I suspect the legislation that forced cat owners to identity chip their pets was introduced so Vet Practices could be sure the cat was the actual insured one.
We live on a small village road with a 30mph limit. There’s a Vet who drives a top of the range Range Rover with personalised VET plate at extremely high speeds, well above the limit, past our house. We have cats, I’ve already had a confrontation with the maggot.

You’ve forgotten, as most do, that the employer contribution to teacher pensions went up over 6% just a year or two back, from 23% of salary to over 29% of salary. Staggering I think you’ll agree. For anyone in the private sector that would equate to a 6% pay rise but the last thing the unions and government want the taxpayer to know about is the largesse given out on the quiet to the public sector.
