“Most people lack the capacity to fight to have their rights respected.”
If you enter a country illegally, as Araceli and her ‘partner’/husband have, with their two children, then you have no rights and should be deported. The US law is quite straightforward on that as is the law for most countries.

Taffman – I admire your optimism – but unless the Marxists split after the 11th June ? Fiscal review thing – they have such a large majority that they can do what they want . Even those labour MPs in red wall seats with Reform as a close second won’t go off the reservation when the whips throw presents at them – like ministerial jobs …

TTK must be banking on the Muslim postal votes and benefits junkies to get him re elected next time . Britain will be in an even worse tax and borrowing position than now – as they busily destroy confidence and jobs whilst making more people hate them more …

Fedup Starmer is not a leader and a leaderless party will not survive. The spending review which you refer to is either going to split the party, or a gutless decision to do nothing will lead to a sterling crisis before too long. Either way they are kebabbed.
Sadly I do not see any ‘salvation’ in democracy. Democracy was gutted by Blair and the establishment will chew up and spit out Reform. With the best will in the world a large Reform majority will inevitably import 20 or 30 gibbering idiots and give the police a field day. Farage, like Truss, will never be allowed to govern. Much as the Tories have been useless I think that they have to be part of the soluition. They at least have a structure and will have some limited experience of government. The problem with the Tories is that they have to ditch their marxist wing.
I think that I posted on here sometime ago (pre-election) that any system which knights a PM who lied to Parliament and 460,000 people died, while sacking a PM who lied to Parliament over a slice of birthday cake is inevitably going to fail. At the moment it is going to take a monumental economic collapse for democracy to be restored. It will not be easy.

taffman, I share your optimism, too, but Nigel Farage has blundered.

He wishes to get rid of the ‘Two Child Benefit Cap’ which will alienate ‘thinking’ potential Reform voters and gives the Labour opposition & the Tories the chance to attack him for Liz Truss-style unfunded giveaways. Reversing the/or part reversing the Winter Fuel Benefit is popular with the voting public because Rachel from Accounts blundered badly. She believed the rhetoric about the Tories £22 billion black hole when it was something of a myth. There is the Labour black hole of £5 billion + the Chagos black hole of £9 billion but spread over many years.

Some international court put out an ‘advisory’ decision that the UK shouldn’t have the Chagos Islands because of its colonial past. The UK government didn’t have to abide by the court’s decision, just say ‘we heard you but think you are wrong’. David Lammy didn’t understand he had that option or felt because the islanders were black it was better to pay a Black Country to have them (perhaps not realising that as a black man being the Foreign Secretary, Chagos was already being ruled by a black man). He must have then gone to Rachel from accounts and asked her how much more was needed to bankrupt the country and offered to help.

Another breathtakingly lopsided BBC ‘report’ based entirely on what TTK is going to say in a speech. It’s just blatant activist propaganda.

It’s a sign of just how far gone the BBC are now that they have the confidence to churn out crap like this knowing nobody will hold them to their charter of impartiality.

You can be sure if they did the same for Farage, it would be full of ‘experts’ and politicians discrediting everything he says. They even do that in this one.

The Prime Minister reckons that Reform’s proposals are unfunded and unrealistic. I’m not an economist (so I’m on an even pegging with him and the chancellor), but I beg to disagree. I think the challenge is what to do with all the money that’s leftover once Net Zero, mass migration and foreign aid have been scrapped. Even with Winter fuel allowance and child benefit restored, and the income tax theft-hold raised to £20K, there will still be billions available each year. Though it might come in useful for an extensive remigration programme, creating a new single tier police and justice service, some more medical schools, and filling a few more potholes.

IR, am part way through Liz Truss’s excellent book ‘Ten Years to save the West’ subtitled ‘Lessons from the only Conservative in the room’. Have just read past her resignation. That came about largely thanks to the OBR’s dodgy forecasts and the incompetence of the BoE and its Governor, Andrew Bailey, to re-assure the Bond markets, especially. There was some interference from the relatively recently installed President Joe Biden and his Chair of the Federal Reserve as well. In addition there was the complication of Liability Driven Investments (a modern version of credit default swaps that helped to crash the world economy in the early noughties) in which Pension Funds had heavily invested.

I just don’t think Farage’s brain works well. Too much booze’n’baccy? The whole point of the two child Benefit Cap is not to prevent indigenous couples having children, rather to prevent ‘incomers’ over populating the Benefit system and it crashing. Potential Reform voters know this, so Nigel Farage risks putting people off voting for Reform.

You really need to read this book. It is quite eye-opening to what resistance happens to a Conservative PM that wishes to have Conservative policies of small State and low taxes. The ‘Blob’ really gets in the way of reforming PMs and even Reforming PMs!

In a word, ‘No’. America has a written constitution and when a president is challenged, it is invariably on the basis that his actions threaten to violate the constitution, which defines his powers in black and white. In contrast, Britain does not have a written constitution, so it’s largely whatever the government says it is on the day. There are some safeguards derived from custom and precedent, but if the Prime Minister finds them inconvenient he can exercise Crown Prerogative and effectively assume dictatorial powers.

Lots of our Doctors are unhappy with their pay and are leaving the Country to go to places like Australia where they get more money.

This leads to the UK having to get lots of Doctors in from other places (who probably need them more) such as India.

Why don’t these Indian Doctors just go straight to Australia where they get more money than in the UK.

If they are fully qualified to the same standard as our trained Doctors surely Australia would welcome them.
If they are not trained to the standard of our Doctors I think we should be made aware of it.

    Two things.
We should train more Doctors. I think the number of Doctors being trained is capped.
We should remove the need for a degree for Nurses and let them train on the job as they used to do which seemed to provide better Nurses.

I spoke to the head of a medical training college in India during one visit to that country. The college was legit and turned out well-trained medical staff, but the problem he explained was that a full set of certificates stating that an individual was a doctor could be purchased in Bombay for 1 lakh rupees (about £1000 at the time) by anyone with the cash. Thereafter, they were ‘qualified’ to apply for work in Britain’s NHS. I am told that similar schemes are in operation in Pakistan and Nigeria. For the good medical colleges, competition for places is so high that students are asked for bakshish (bribes) to secure a place, even if they have top marks. Most doctors from overseas are fully qualified, competent and trustworthy, and I am grateful for those who have treated me both here and in India. But, they do things differently in other parts of the world and that can sometimes have untoward consequences.

Someone I know has their eyesight monitored at Moorfields Eye Hospital, or at least they did pre-Covid. During all the lockdowns they closed the hospital to all except those with life-threatening conditions then didn’t send out regular appointments. Patients who then hadn’t been seen for 2 years were signed off – presumably halving the number of patients and the waiting lists.
A friend waiting a back operation has been sent a long list of the things that could go wrong with the operation and is now deciding whether to go ahead – again a brilliant way of halving the waiting list for very little effort. It seems it is what the NHS is about these days rather than curing ailments.

So the UN had a warehouse full of food in Gaza which they hadn’t distributed to the ‘starving’ population…judging by the film they seem pretty well fed and nowhere near death’s door….

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0qg5z4lkj0o

The BBC reports some people died….there were gunshots and killings…but no-one knows where the bullets came from….on the other hand the BBC immediately blamed the Israelis when people died when a mob descended upon the Israeli food centre….absolutely no proof Israeli soldiers shot them….

‘Dozens injured by Israeli gunfire as crowds overwhelmed Gaza aid site, UN says’

Perhaps the reason the UN warehouse was stuffed with food was because it was actually run by Hamas…and it was their gunfire that killed some of the people?

The UN claims that Hamas is not stealing food…but how likely is it that they aren’t? The BBC ignores evidence even from Biden’s own spokesman…

‘Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist group that rules the Gaza Strip, attempted to seize a major shipment of humanitarian aid from Jordan intended for civilians in Gaza, according to a US State Department spokesman.’

    https://www.algemeiner.com/2024/05/03/hamas-tried-steal-gaza-aid-shipment-jordan-us-says/

Some might say the BBC is a ‘weapon of war’….fighting as it does on behalf of a terrorist group, pumping out their propaganda relentlessly and shamelessly.

The are very clearly being ‘ethnically cleansed’. They either leave or die.

There is no argument you could make against that – so the BBC will omit it. All they want to do is say Trump is wrong infer he is a racist.

When it’s one of their own of course, the word ‘racist’ is never used. Toby jug Lineker for example is being called ‘anti-semetic’.

That’s just a phrase they push themselves to sanitise their own racism. Lineker is a racist in the absolute truest sense of the word. But they reserve that specific word for use only against the Right.

And if they want to brand someone as racist against Muslims for example – which is absolute nonsense, it’s a religion – they get away with it by quoting someone else calling them racists.

This is the true face of the BBC. Extreme Left, shameless liars. The agenda is everything. They think the ends justify the means. As did Hitler.

Just look at what the extreme-Left ‘Fergal Keane’ has written now:

‘Gaza has been subjected to forced starvation by Israel, a top UN official has told the BBC.’
    https://www.bbc.com/news/videos/c2d5z24dnngo

Another outrageously pro-agenda piece by this ethically-barren activist – and once again the damning statement used as a headline is just what someone said. So it doesn’t have to be true.

The REAL truth Fergal is that Gaza is being starved by Hamas because they have taken the aid and are selling it to fund their terrorism. So the poor are starving.

But of course Fergal knows that and doesn’t care one bit. He just wants to blame Israel. Those starving people are ammunition for his racism. Nothing else.

If he had any journalistic ethics whatsoever he would be detailing all the aid which went into Gaza during the ceasefire and asking where it has all gone so quickly.

But he won’t. And that’s why he is right at home at the BBC.

The UN are fully complicit with what has happened. They allowed Hamas to take it. No doubt many of their ‘operatives’ are actual members of Hamas or very strong supporters of them. They have proved themselves absolutely unfit for purpose – but the media such as the BBC remain silent about it. They have utterly failed their journalistic ethics.

It shows what total hypocrisy the slogan on the BBC’s wall is:
“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear”

Our various corporate media outlets, although propagating a rather narrow left-leaning editorial outlook, tend to have their distinctive minor style rules. The Guardian, for instance, when quoting the Ukrainian war leader likes to spell his name like so: Trump must realise Putin is obstacle to peace, Zelenskyy says.

Our BBC, meanwhile, when passing on the thoughts of the Ukraine president simplifies matters with their in-house orthography: Zelensky accuses Russia of ‘buying time’ to stall truce talks

Much in the manner of Susie Dent lexicographer and a co-presenter in her Dictionary Corner of Channel 4’s long-running day time hit quiz show Countdown, our left-leaning virtual, digital newspaper the Independent, pondered this very conundrum back in March 2022 soon after the beginning of the current outbreak of hostilities.

Is it Zelensky or Zelenskyy? Behind the spelling of the Ukrainian president’s name… The last name of Ukraine’s president is correctly spelled: Зеленський (Independent)

Your Mr AsI’s long-running old gag has been to observe how other spellings were available in our news – although an alternative to the current western foreign policy of pointless and losing costly proxy war was apparently not.

Pointless presented by Alexander Armstrong is a game show where contestants aim to score the fewest points possible by guessing the least popular answers given by people in polls on various subjects – thank you IMDb

    But I digress…

For readers of The Guardian or Reuters, Ukraine’s president is Volodymyr Zelenskiy. If you get your news from Sky or Al Jazeera, his last name is “Zelenskyy”. (Independent) – the Gruaniad, rather in character as the old slapdash spelling joke goes, seems to have moved on to the double YY form: Zelenskyy challenges Putin to meet in person for peace talks, although Reuters has stuck with their unusual somewhat exotic looking 2022 version: Zelenskiy accuses Russia of ‘another deception’ by holding back peace memorandum

The March 2022 article by Andrew Feinberg, Washington, DC, explained: And at The Independent, along with publications that follow the Associated Press Style Guide, the name of Ukraine’s president is “Zelensky”.

Perhaps acknowledging the growing confusion in his readership, our Mr Feinberg admits: All this name gaming is probably leading you to scratch your head and wonder what the correct spelling of the Ukrainian leader’s last name is.

And in that rather entitled pedagogic style of the left-leaning international correspondent (a style all too familiar to BBC audences) he explained: Fortunately, we can give you a definitive answer to that question. The reason behind the multiple spellings is that the Ukrainian language doesn’t use the same alphabet as English, so any rendering of Ukrainian names into the English language is a transliteration, which means we’re taking the Ukrainian spelling Зеленський and fashioning it into an English-like spelling that approximates how it is said aloud

And by the way: I don’t think we (BBC) are going to go for the double – Y – it just confuses our audience. (Johna Fisher, @JohnaFisherBBC)

Our Johna was happily reassured: Dear colleagues, this is the official form of the last name that the President has in his passport. This was decided by the passport service of Ukraine. The President won’t be offended if BBC standards assume different transliteration (Iuliia Mendel @IuliiaMendel – Iuliia Mendel is a Ukrainian journalist who served as press secretary and spokesperson for Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine)

Speaking of house-styles – the Financial Times is an advocate of the double YY: Zelenskyy meets Merz to shore up support amid Trump uncertainty Premium content… Also in this newsletter: French National Assembly backs assisted dying bill – always good to know the “collective west” (TM Russian propaganda) is keeping in step with almost every top-down received policy – apart of course from the spelling of the name Zelensky where we’re allowed to go our ways, so to speak.

Speaking of FT house-style it is now well-established editorial policy to term any disapproved political tendency found anywhere on the globe “far right” and moreover to assume a posture of alarm at their elctoral success.

Portugal’s far right rises… The Chega party has become the main opposition after final votes were counted in this month's election, a turning point after 50 years of domination by two main centrist forces (FT)

Cheggers Plays Pop was a British children’s game show broadcast on BBC1 from 10 April 1978 to 7 November 1986 hosted by Keith Chegwin – thank you Wiki.

This would be the ‘Baron” Hermer who donated £5,000 to Starmer’s campaign to become Labour leader. Reading his entry in Wikipedia shows that he has represented or been involved with a ‘diverse’ range of clients including Gerry Adams, Saudi Arabian terrorist Mustafa al-Hawsawi, convicted terrorist Rangzieb Ahmed, and Shamima Begum (via Liberty). Well, perhaps not so diverse after all.

The problem with people like Hermer is that their mindset is frozen in time circa 1939. Everything is focused on that era, in which Hitler represents the Devil and everything evil, whereas someone like himself represents everything good, a sort of amalgam of Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela rolled into one. They don’t recognise or are in denial that what they would describe as the post world consensus, expressed at a philosophical level by the likes of Karl Popper (mentor to George Soros) is now in its death throws, along with its destructive concepts of globalism, bogus equality and interventionist warfare. Unfortunately, rather than devote their energies and skills to forging the future world, they are tending to double-down and cling to a rapidly vanishing past in which they were important.
