So yeah…not a lot of punching going on there then….and Zelensky has noticed and noted this failure to help Ukraine in a meaningful way….as he said today…

Smith’s comments were all the more amusing as they were made before Trump came to agreement on Greenland….and thus the frothy mouthed, swivel-eyed rant was quickly shown to be nonsense and just another example of TDS.

This is a non-story that is being hyped by deliberately loose language…the BBC claims the 5 year old boy is ‘detained’, ie arrested, when he certainly was not…obviously.
The BBC helping to spread dangerous disinformation….as always….and even in this report about the boy they slip in this provocative comment…

‘Alleged’? Nah…numerous videos from many angles show the car being driven at and into the officer…who was injured and had to go to hospital. Why does the BBC not add that little truth onto its comment if it feels the need to comment at all?
It’s reassuring to know that every driver in the UK under the age of 70 has perfect vision as opposed to those over 70’s who must be tested to be allowed to drive.
We are told we cannot return the channel popper overs. They chuck their passports into the sea etc. and we don’t know where to return them to.
The simple solution is this.
They are coming from France illegally so we have every right to refuse to accept them and therefore must be returned to France where they came from.
It’s up to France to return these people back along the chain to the Country from where they entered France.

If you travelled to France without your passport they would not let you enter and you would need to return to the UK.

One of the things I hate about the BBC is the sheer amount of casual “en passant” bias in its summaries of past events anterior to current news. These little distortions can easily go by unnoticed, if you’re not paying attention.
For instance: earlier this week, I caught a Radio 4 news bulletin which recapped (i.e misrepresented) for us the Craig Guildford / Aston Villa v Maccabi match-policing controversy. The newsreader said that the W. Midlands Chief Constable had retired after giving “inaccurate” information. However, “inaccurate” hardly does justice to what happened.
“Inaccurate” would be if I said inflation was 4% when it was, say, 3.6% or if I said two dozen had died in the Spanish train disaster instead of 39 (e.g. if I quoted the first reports from the Sunday evening … before the higher figure emerged.)
What Craig Guildford said was deceitful, deliberately misleading and fabricated, whatever the involvement of AI (which was later blamed as an excuse). The Amsterdam police did NOT tell his force what Guildford claimed about the cause of troubles when Maccabi fans were attacked by Muslims when their team was playing there. Nor was there any game between West Ham and Maccabi that could provide any precedent about policing tactics. The claims of threats to Birmingham (Aston) Muslims by any visiting fans were the inverse of the real probability, since local Muslims would greatly outnumber visiting Israeli fans, even if they chose (or were allowed) to attend.
Another casual misrepresentation came from Nick Robinson on Today a while ago. He glibly referred to “eye-watering” austerity when G. Osborne was Chancellor (2010-16). No context about why some retrenchment was necessary after the Blair-Brown debauchery. No acknowledgement that the government in 2010-15 was in any case a coalition and that the Lib Dems (Clegg, D. Alexander and co.) deserved to share any credit/blame for limiting spending with their Tory senior partners. And a stupid emotive exaggeration about what was in truth a modest reduction in spending, of which Marxists like Robinson would of course always disapprove, safe in their bloated salaries and security of tenure at BBC-Pravda.

There is a strong tendency for countries to go along to get along. To accommodate. To avoid trouble. To hope that compliance will buy safety.
In 1978, the Czech dissident Václav Havel, later president, wrote an essay called The Power of the Powerless. And in it, he asked a simple question: How did the communist system sustain itself?
And his answer began with a greengrocer. Every morning, this shopkeeper places a sign in his window: “Workers of the world, unite!” He doesn’t believe it. No one does. But he places the sign anyway to avoid trouble, to signal compliance, to get along. And because every shopkeeper on every street does the same, the system persists.
Not through violence alone, but through the participation of ordinary people in rituals they privately know to be false.
Havel called this “living within a lie.” The system’s power comes not from its truth but from everyone’s willingness to perform as if it were true. And its fragility comes from the same source: when even one person stops performing — when the greengrocer removes his sign — the illusion begins to crack.
Friends, it is time for companies and countries to take their signs down.
For decades, countries like Britain prospered under what we called the rules-based European Union. We joined its institutions, we praised its principles, we benefited from its predictability. And because of that we could pursue values-based foreign policies under its protection.
We knew the story of the European rules-based order was partially false. That the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient. That trade rules were enforced asymmetrically. And we knew that international law applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused or the victim.
This fiction was useful. And EU hegemony, in particular, helped provide public goods: open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security and support for frameworks for resolving disputes.
So, we placed the sign in the window. We participated in the rituals. And we largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality.
This bargain no longer works.
More recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as weapons. Tariffs as leverage. Financial infrastructure as coercion. Supply chains as vulnerabilities to be exploited.
You cannot “live within the lie” of mutual benefit through integration when integration becomes the source of your subordination.
And as a result, many countries are drawing the same conclusions — that they must develop greater strategic autonomy: in energy, food, critical minerals, in finance and supply chains.
And this impulse is understandable. A country that cannot feed itself, fuel itself or defend itself has few options. When the rules no longer protect you, you must protect yourself.’
Naturally Carney was talking about Trump and the supposedly new world order….though America has never exactly been a truly benevolent and kindly country….but what he says applies equally to the EU and how it treats member countries…forcing them to vote again when it doesn’t like the results of ballots and using economic muscle, tariffs, rules and regulations and even travel requirements to cause as much trouble as possible for Brexit Britain as a punishment for leaving.
