Like Denis Boyles, I was confused by the varying police estimate of numbers of protestors reported by various sources. So I emailed the Metropolitan Police on Friday and asked them what their official figure is.
They wrote back within half an hour and told me their estimate is 100,000. This matches the figure reported by the BBC here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/3223780.stm
(the number in the report is the same today as last Friday)
