Just because the AP says it’s news

…doesn’t mean the Beeb has to agree. This “story” is bogus. President Bush, after all, was not slow to declare a state of emergency along the Gulf Coast. Mayor Nagin’s reaction to this “news” is laughable and hypocritical but the Beeb is happy to serve us New Orleans sludge.

Update: DFH, one of our B-BBC commenterati has two very helpful posts here and here. Auntie can’t get away with what she once did.

    Susan,
Sure “epic” may be an Americanism for scenic views of Nth America but why does the BRITISH broadcasting corporation have to adopt and broadcast another country’s misuse of our language. Why not go all the way and spell center and color the American way. It leads to confusion after all if my kids ask me to describe what “epic” means, am I to say, It’s North American for scenic views?

We have the following questions posed:

Guantanamo Bay detention is a place that Bush proves his degree of enemity to Muslims.
    Mahat Khalif, Mandera, Kenya
Glad you out. Remember brother the Koran says “truth must prevail and falsehood must vanish” if you haven’t done nothing wrong there is no need to be afraid.
    Tamsir, Maryland, US

What muslims need is fairness and justice. These blind-folded Westerners don’t see what the evil-handedness of their leaders.
    Bishar

I find this whole discussion amazing. A man who has suffered a massive injustice is being hounded as if he is guilty of sept 11. There is no smoke without fire, however, sometimes innocent people are locked up with no charges or evidence.
    Anon

What is the legal recourse available for the people in detention in camp X-ray? Shouldn’t you be part of such an effort?
    Stelios-Greece

Don’t you think Guantanamo Bay has brought more enemies to American than friends, including me.
    Monsur, Nigeria

Every prison is bound to have an innocent or two. That said I think most of the detainees deserve to be there.
    Sheldon

Presuming you view your imprisonment as unjust, can you or do you forgive the US for this? If not how are you hoping to heal from your experience?
    Eryll, Nairobi

That bears so little resemblance to the most recommended list I don’t know where to start. Unbelievable.

the fawning, the bending-over-backwards, to a Jihadist – to someone who would have been hung for high treason under Churchill – is extraordinary.

if this sort of thing is allowed to continue, quite frankly, we wont win the war on terror. and unfortunately, it will take several hundred (if not thousands) more London dead for the penny to finally drop.

that is my conclusion. we’re f**ked and we’re waiting for our Churchill to appear.

I think this takes the biscuit.
    From:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/world_have_your_say/default.stm

    they say:

“We’ve had a number of e-mails complaining of our decision to put your calls to freed Guantanamo Bay inmate Moazzam Begg on today’s programme.
Here’s a sample of some of the complaints:
“Why is the BBC giving a self confessed Al Qaeda supporter/activist/terrorist a platform to spread their propaganda and lies ?”
“Perhaps if they’d crashed a few plains (sic) into buildings in your country you would feel different. You should stop trying to defend these people and start looking at everything they’ve done and are doing to harm people.”
“It is quite incredible that the BBC should give you a platform to propagate your extremist viewpoints”
There are a number of points to deal with here. Firstly, we’re not giving him a “platform” any more than we give anyone else a platform. He’s been invited on to the programme to answer YOUR questions and so far, there are hundreds of them.”
    ————————
    Nice:
It seems Begg has featured on a number of BBC programmes, including something with Andrew Marr (Is that R4 or one of the TV channels? Can someone oblige me with a reference?), Victoria Derbyshire on R5, the World Service post 6.00 and now the website.
From my perspective this looks pretty much like a “platform” (as well as a whole series of book ‘plugs’).
    ————————-
“Secondly, Moazzam Begg has not been found guilty of anything. No charges have been brought, he’s faced no trial and is not therefore, in the eyes of the law, a criminal or a terrorist.”
    ————————-
    Oh yeah?
Whether or not Begg has been brought to trial is irrelevant.
‘Jack the Ripper’ was not charged, was not brought to trial and was not found guilty, so by your lights, that entity was not a serial murderer.
Or perhaps the case of the Traitor, Melita Norwood would be a little more apt, a little less sensationalist.

“Eighty-seven-year-old Melita Norwood spied for the Soviet Union for four decades, passing on crucial information about Britain’s nuclear secrets. Although she retired in the early 1970’s, her secret life has now been made public. Mrs Norwood says she believed in the Communist ideology, and did what she thought was right.
A decision has already been taken that a prosecution would not be in the public interest. The opposition Conservative party is demanding a detailed statement from the government, explaining what it knew about the affair.”

Why people are prosecuted (or not) seems to depend on the fragility of DPP’s sensibilities (feel free to put forward your own theories on the non-prosecution of Mr. Begg)
    ————————————————
“Thirdly, I believe Mr Begg’s experiences are important to hear about (and judging by the massive response you think this too whatever you think of him personally) given the ongoing news story surrounding the use of Guantanamo Bay and what the US calls the “war on terror”. Many of you have e-mailed to say that you instinctively disagree with him, but you want to hear his views.”
    ————————————————–
    Hmm.
Are these truly Begg’s experiences? Not perhaps alleged experiences?
The BBC was there to witness the events he describes? Or perhaps the BBC is taking the word of this eminently ‘trustworthy’ fellow (the Al’Qa-Ida training manual found in Manchester notwithstanding)?
Anyway. Why are you plugging this man’s book?
    —————————————————
“We advertised in advance on our website that Mr Begg will be taking calls and answering your e-mails precisely to get as wide a range of your opinions and views together in time for the programme. It is clear that some of you think there’s “no smoke without fire” and some of you see him as a victim. That’s why we want you to talk to him, whatever your views.
Of course I accept that for some of you we are wrong to invite him on to World Have Your Say and I apologise if that causes offence. But I can assure you we are not allowing him to dictate the agenda as would be the case with any guest; you will dictate that.”
    —————————————————–
    And here’s the rub.
I hope you will pardon me, but this is the part that gives me (among others) the most difficulty.
It is in the area of ‘impartiality’ and ‘questions’ that the BBC’s reputation has suffered the greatest.
The rigging of the post 9/11 and 7/7 ’Question Time’ programmes represent something of a revelation to the Public and any number of assurances offered by the BBC now tend to count for very little.

    ie

    I don’t believe you.

its staggering how Andrew Marr didnt pin him down on WHY he wanted to go to Chechnya of all places. And then, on top of that, he carts his wife and children off to Taliban controlled Afghanistan.

Again – not pinned down on the WHY.

staggering. now , i know Marr isnt a confrontational interviewer – that’s his style – but for Gods sakes – a few intelligent friggin questions would have helped.

instead we got a load of huff ‘n’puff about his “remarkable” and “extraordinary” book.

I am disgusted and dismayed, that the bbc should see fit to present this man at all, let alone as a victim of the west. A hero of the cuase.
He admitts to being a terrorist wannabe, his intentions were clear. Yet al-beeb (Piddle Be Uppon Them)insist on providing a platform (despite the ‘explanation’, a platform is exactly what it is),for this idiot.
And as for the comments, from DHYS, chosen by the beeb… well, it’s just as well I was sitting.

Sadly though, I am ultimately not surprised, as I have come to expect little more from such a vile beast as al-beeb. Repugnant, just repugnant.

The BBC; at best pathetic, but generally a repulsive, shameless, grotesquely biased, scandalous waste of tax payers money.

In all wars, enemy non combatants are interned, including women and children. The Boers hold that we British invented concentration camps because we rounded up the women and children of the Boer Farmer who was fighting the British. Being of a particular faith will not stop this happening. All Japanese Americans were interned for the duration of WW11 as were Anglo Germans in Britain.
It is not extraordinary it’s common sense. If an enemy attacks you and you can identify where they are coming from you simply lock up those who may be unduly influenced by their nationality or ideology to make war on you. It’s called self preservation. The naive 9/11 attack woke the sleeping giant America in the same way as Pearl Harbour. Prior to this a debate was ongoing as to how much of a threat to world peace was Islam. After the attack, the public expected action in the same way as 7/7 in London aroused public opinion to prosecute those in this country who preached Jihad.
Those in Gitmo are at least probably guilty of something while past internees have purely been selected by race, i.e. Japanese or German.

“On February 19, 1942, soon after the beginning of World War II, Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. The evacuation order commenced the round-up of 120,000 Americans of Japanese heritage to one of 10 internment camps—officially called “relocation centers”—in California, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arkansas.”
    http://www.infoplease.com/spot/internment1.html
“The Concentration Camps, Boer women and children in a concentration camp

These had originally been set up for refugees whose farms had been destroyed in the fighting, and the term “concentration camp” did not originally have a malignant meaning as it was simply a camp where refugees were concentrated. However, following Kitchener’s new policy many more were built and they were converted to prisons. This new idea was essentially humane in its planning in London but ultimately proved brutal due to its lack of proper implementation.

There were a total of 45 tented camps built for Boer internees and 64 for black African ones. The Boer camps held mainly the elderly, women and children as of the roughly 28,000 Boer prisoners of war, 25,630 were sent to camps overseas; but the native African ones held large numbers of men as well. Even when forcibly removed from Boer areas, the black Africans were not considered to be hostile to the British, and so provided a paid labour force. ”

    http://experts.about.com/e/b/bo/Boer_War.htm
On 12th May, 1940, John Anderson, who was in charge of national security, ordered the arrests of over 2,000 male aliens living in coastal areas. A few days later all ‘B’ class aliens were rounded up and placed into internment camps. Winston Churchill defended this policy by claiming that it was necessary to “collar the lot”.

sarge -> some of them ended up in camps on the Isle of Man. That comedian chap David Baddiel – his dad was a Jewish refugee from Germany, and even he was rounded up. Harsh – but Churchill didnt want to take *any* chances with letting ANY German free to roam around England, irrespective of religion.

D-Day might not have happened were it not for Churchill’s “collar the lot” policy.

I am quite interested in what Mr Begg has to say for himself – though much of it is probably self-serving bullshit – and I shall defend his right to say it. That the BBC is acting as a de facto literary publicist and allowing him to appear on his own terms doesn’t surprise me though.

Islamism – to me – is a form of religious apartheid and its supporters should be treated in a similar fashion to any other group that dwells on the extremes of the political spectrum.

The BBC frequently gives a platform to Islamists – and often does not disclose the fact that they are Islamists – but it does not allow spokesmen for the BNP on its airwaves. The BBC’s website does not publish cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet, Mohammad, because it does not wish to give ‘offence’, yet it will show images depicting two Jewish politicians as flying pigs. It will also broadcast programmes that it knows it outrage Christians.

To this end, the BBC is guilty of the most appalling double standards. It is willing to offend many people by allowing anti-democratic religious supremacists onto its programmes but applies different rules lest these same religious supremacists are themselves ‘offended’.

Hollywood’s apparent stance against Bush, maybe not so –

There is an expression in Hollywood that the studios make movies about what people were talking about last year. There is always a lag between idea and premiere. “Munich” took six years to reach the multiplex. “Brokeback Mountain” took eight. “Syriana” is based on a book written during the Clinton administration.
In other words, Spielberg is totally bullshitting. It’s not about Bush, it’s about Clinton.

This is a very very serious war OK, but not that type of war yet. It has been the policy for the west to not use a conscript army since Viet-Nam. They have not got to convince large numbers of young men to possibly die for the country. A few civis dieing means nothing to any politician. Our lives and property get more worthless to the goverment every day.

It is clear to our leaders ( that does not include TB or GB ) here and America, that this is a war of hearts and minds. A war we are at this moment losing, and losing very badly. However we normaly start wars by doing lotts of losing.

It would aways be difficult for the Labour Party to win this type of battle. Which is why I believe, we should have never gone to war under a Labour leadership at all. Which of cause we would not have been able to, if Tony Blair had not LIED to his own MPs.

NEVER START A WAR ON A LIE or your chances of winning hearts and minds will take you much longer.

Thatcher knew that the Falklands War had to be won quickly. Or public opinion and the BBC/labour party would lose the Islands for us.

How can a Labour goverment win hearts and minds? When its whole belief stucture is anti West and anti-British. Right now if an invation was threatend by anyone, which of cause it never will be. I would not lift one finger to stop it.

I am quite ashamed of this country now. It grieves me that any British person should die in the name of this ” stands for nothing country.” To bring a Democracy anything like this one to any other country is a CRIME in itself.

To my knowledge we were only involved in one war during that “so called” Nazi Thatcher goverment. 5 and counting under Blair. Remember the fuss the BBC/Labour Party made during the Falklands War,and that war was just to liberate British Subjects.

This is as I say again a Battle for Hearts and Minds, not only for Iraqis and Iranians. But for the hearts and Minds of the people of this country.

This goverment and the BBC is in such a mess with its own core believes and supporters. It is not only a danger to us, it is a danger to the Americans as well.

    Think about this
The bulk of the population of Muslims in Britain are conservative by nature. As are all sane people. The thing they really dont like is everything Tony Blair and the Labour Party are proud of. That is feminism, one parent mothers, lack of law and order, no disipline in schools or in the home etc etc etc. In fact all things that make practicing their religion to their benifit, impossible within the law of this country. The Christians and socialists stopped bothering about these things, but thats not the Muslims fault. The socialists take resposibily for these things away from the people, so now they must take the blame. The BBC will do its best to hide this contradiction, but that wont make it go away.

    Talked of Rivers of Blood

Read the exact speech Gary – this title was made up – he talked of “the Tiber foaming” in an allusion to Horace I believe………..not the spin the tabloids put on it

It is worth reading Enoch Powells full speach in context. Judge for yourself, was he right? In MHO – definately.

Socialism is Nec. I’m surprised the Wark-ness monster found time to interview the boy Doherty. She can usually be found holidaying with First Minister McConnell. That’s when she’s not wasting the public’s money on expensive, self-serving publicity stunts, such as the film about the building of Holyrood.

    Gary Powell/Rick

“I seem to see the Tiber foaming with much blood”

It was an allegory of Virgil’s in the Aenid – the Tiber foaming with much blood was a portent of troubled times ahead.. Enoch Powell delivered it, his audience (a constituency meeting in Birmingham) generally missed what he was saying and the legend grew from there of his ‘rivers of blood’ speech.

smacks of ein Reich fur ein Volk – its hitting the wrong target in other words.

i would tend to more agree with Gary above , when he talks about Muslim immigrants:
“The thing they really dont like is everything Tony Blair and the Labour Party are proud of. That is feminism, one parent mothers, lack of law and order, no disipline in schools or in the home etc etc etc.”

    spot on.
no wonder some young Muslims turn to Jihad – political correctness is causing it.

The World Service Have Your Say page on the Begg interview at 6pm yesterday puts a lot of comments up front and centre that are totally out of step with the patttern of recommendations on the comments and questions made before the programme. Editorial spin at its most obvious.

By now it should be possible for us to access the archived interview, if not the transcript. I have tried the link at the right of the page “Lisren again” since 8pm last night, and still cannot get it to play.

Is this yet another technical glitch ? Now wouldn’t that be odd ???

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/world_have_your_say/default.stm#

But I finally found it is accessable via this page – click on Radio Player lower down in the centre of the page, then select World Have Your Say from the Listen Again list – and select the Monday programme.

You will hear that the BBC gave yet another platform for Begg to advertise his book, and to propound his glib views. He tried to say that the training camps he attended were not “terrorist” camps because they were training for attacks in “occupied” Kashmir. In my book terrorism is terrorism is terrorism. He clearly believes in advancing islam by military means.

It is disgraceful that the BBC should drive its anti-war agenda by giving so much airtime to this weaselly creep. The interviewer on the World Service programme is clearly a junior journalist, and is also a part-time DJ. He did not press Begg on any single issue. Great.

Meanwhile the World Service is grinding away at its usual agenda. The current topic for “Have Your Say” on the World Service homepage is the Amnesty report on Iraq jails. Surely the impasse over Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions is more important ?

Anyone who want to recommend any of the comments can click on the link at the right – at present the comments are mostly anti-Coalition.

The BBC’s dislike of Grammar Schools comes through in this puff-piece for one of their programmes:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/4755270.stm

A couple of points to note:

In the very first paragraph it implies that parents are only driven to educate their children in grammar schools because of “headlines about falling standards”. Clearly these people aren’t able to work it out for themselves; they are incited to do so by the Daily Fuehrer.

The writer of the article unintentionally shows the Socialists’ beloved Comprehensive system up when he writes:

“They have all taken some form of 11-plus – a variety of tests based on assessing core skills including verbal and non-verbal reasoning, maths and English.”

    and then writes…

“The techniques to pass these exams, however, are not taught in mainstream schools”

So, the skills to pass exams on core skills such as reasoning, maths and English are not taught in Comprehensive schools. I think we need more Grammar Schools, don’t you?

And on a similar note, a terrorist is leading the abolition of Grammar Schools in Ulster, with the Government’s enthusiastic support:

Britain is now officially nuts and is firmly set on the path to its own self-destruction.
