field.size -> Mr Steele should read, and read again, and read some more, the Hamas Charter.

seems to me that some Guardianista’s haven’t signed up the Euston Manifesto and are running around in a warped world of denial.

Even if Hamas dressed up in Hitler S.S. uniforms, and started flying swastikas , they still would not “get it”.

it reminds me, in many ways, of the self-deluded attitude that existed towards Stalin (which Orwell got seriously pissed off about), and later to the Soviet nuclear threat.

Deliberate escalations risk destabilising the whole region, Jeremy Bowen says

And exactly who is doing the escalating according to Jeremey ‘Mr. Enhanced’ Bowen?

    You guessed it.

Israel has described what happened on Wednesday, when two Israeli soldiers were captured, eight killed and two injured in a Hezbollah ambush, as an act of war.

It has retaliated with highly escalated acts of war, which are calculated to put a great deal of pressure on the civilian population.

First Hizballah rockets land in Haifa, one of Israel’s three main cities and chemicals industrial center

    July 13, 2006, 8:36 PM (GMT+02:00)

Hizballah has just denied sending the two rockets which hit a street in the Stella Maris suburb near an Israeli military base after dark Thursday. No immediate word on injuries. Residents of Haifa and its environs ordered to shelter in protected areas, placing more than 700,000 Israeli civilians in shelters.
More than 100 rockets landed on northern Israel in a single day, 90 Israelis were injured, one woman killed in her home in the coastal resort of Nahariya which was battered by Katyusha fire through the day. After dusk, several more people were injured when another volley hit residential streets. Residents are fleeing south with children. Safed took another round of rockets after dark and more casualties. One fatality reported, the second of the day. After nightfall, Hatzor Haglilit, Amiad and Korazim came under attack.

    http://www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=2875

n northern Israel, 90 civilians injured, one killed, by dozens of Hizballah rockets against towns and communities within a 20-km radius from the border Thursday. The entire region placed on a war footing…

BTW, I’m listening (again) to Melanie Phillips and others on Moral Maze talking about Gaza:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/religion/moralmaze.shtml
Gaza crisis threatens to become a calamity – Palestinian pain is not Israel’s fault – Europe’s response to the siege of Gaza is shameful …

These are newspaper headlines from recent days revealing very different political perspectives on what is going on in Gaza.

But behind the politics, what of the morality? Why has Israel used violence against the Palestinians in Gaza? Is this disproportionate, even collective, punishment for Palestinian actions and threats, or a morally legitimate response to the abduction of Corporal Shalit?

Clifford Longley, Melanie Phillips, Ian Hargreaves and Steven Rose cross-examine the experts, live, in The Moral Maze.

ITN news report this evening was incredibly unbiased and fair, with regards to the developments in Lebanon.

there were reports from the Lebanese side, Beirut – and then reports from the Israeli side, showing the effects of the both the Hezbollah rocket attacks & the IDF response.

Tonight’s six o clock bbc tv news gave its usual soft touch to the story of the illegal immigrant (this point was not mentioned of course) who was illegaly cremated in the open on a funeral pyre in Northumberland by his relatives. The piece was crammed full of phrases about “cultural sensitivity”, “religeous beliefs” plus an interview with a sikh who says this sort of open air cremation should now be be allowed here. But of course, there was only a passing mention of the fact that this is, er, illegal in this country.

No interview with police, no interview with cremation authority, no interview with environmental health. In fact there was no critical input at all into this piece.

i disagree Will. by withdrawing the settlers located in Gaza, it acheives two things

    1. allows Israel to show the world how the P.A. operate when given autonomy.

    2. if that fails , it gives them a free fire zone, without fear of counterattacks on Israeli settlers (because of the security wall)

strategically it was a smart move, and it will work out in the long run, albeit painful initially.

well, a report on the Sikhs makes a nice change from the constant Muslim-Muslim-Muslim bleating, that i am quite frankly sick to death of.

although your point is valid – a counter argument should have been presented, re environmental/pollution aspects.

i think it also ties in to a recent Times report that Hindu/Sikh community do feel ignored – and annoyed. They are peaceful, and yet they dont have government attention. Muslims blow up tube trains and we get endless “initiatives” and a full on “Islam Expo”.

Acts of war raise risk to region
    By Jeremy Bowen
    BBC Middle East Editor

Israel has made a highly escalated response

It is not yet war between Israel and Lebanon, but these are acts of war.

Israel has described what happened on Wednesday, when two Israeli soldiers were captured, eight killed and two injured in a Hezbollah ambush, as an act of war.

It has retaliated with highly escalated acts of war, which are calculated to put a great deal of pressure on the civilian population.

As in Gaza – where an Israeli soldier is being held by Palestinian militant groups, including the military wing of Hamas – it is not just trying to get its people back, it is trying to deliver severe blows to Hamas and Hezbollah – trying to change the rules of the game.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/5177346.stm

Mr Bowen was it really an ambush by Hezbollah or was it a full scale attack against Israel? I think you will find it was the latter and not the lesser sounding former.

Mr Bowen as somebody who comes across as very intelligent do you really think the Israeli response is to put a great deal of pressure on the Lebanese population or more rightly to put pressure on the Lebanese government to sort out the terrorists in their midst.

As for that comment Israel is trying to deliver serve blows to the two terrorist orgs by trying to change the rules.
Err Mr Bowen, don’t you think that if those two Terrorist groups hadn’t have launched attacks on Israel in the first place. Israel wouldn’t be hitting back now.
    Changing the rules indeed. The only reason Hamas launched the initial attack is simply world donor pressure about how they defend the destruction of the state of Israel was starting to bite and lose them support amongst the Plebs. By striking Israel and sitting back for heavy response they know that ;
    1) They regain the support of those who are demanding they recognise Israel
    2) They earn the pity of the likes of the BBC who bend over backwards (literally) to promote their cause.
    3) They hope that in light of the Israeli response the liberals of the world will pressure their leaders to resume paying for the destruction of Israel

Al Beeb dancing to the tune of its terrorist masters.

Al Beeb and how it promotes a vision of Israeli oppression.

So Al beeb is burning the midnight oil by reporting on the current crisis in the Levant.
    So how many people out there have noted how Al Beeb in the language it uses paints this image of a vast invasion of Lebanon by the IDF.Here let me help you;
“Israel launched an assault in southern Lebanon using planes, tanks and gunboats following the capture.”
“Roads and Hezbollah outposts were hit and two civilians killed as Israeli forces entered Lebanon, in their first incursion since 2000.”
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/5173078.stm

Lebanon is dealing with an Israeli land invasion for the first time since 2000, when Israel ended a 22-year occupation of the south. It will be expecting punitive raids on its infrastructure closer to Beirut.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/5177346.stm

    And how about this pro terrorist quote from Al Beeb;
“Hezbollah guerrillas captured two Israeli soldiers on Wednesday, and killed eight when Israel sent troops into southern Lebanon on a rescue mission.”
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/5175002.stm

So according to Al Beeb Israel is well on her way to Beruit.

    Really?

By amazing coincidence, Rehman is also ‘chairman of the Newham monitoring project’. He appeared after a recent police raid on a Muslim family’s home in London.

    Yes, that police raid.

He has appeared on Five Live a few times recently. His membership of the SWP , his role in Respect and his unashamed Islamist/Marxist opinions were not mentioned.

Paulette North was another ‘guest’ – she was invited onto Victoria Derbyshire’s phone-in to talk education and was described as a ‘concerned mother’.

Five Live did not mention that, amongst many other things, she was a Respect candidate in the 2005 general election.

When challenged, the BBC claimed that it did not mention their political connections because they were invited onto the BBC in a ‘different capacity’ (e.g. spokesman for the de Menezes family; a concerned mother; a life-long, die-hard football fan who has been going to Highbury to watch her beloved Fulham for 40 years).

He is a political activist. She is a political activist. Their views are important and their voices should be heard. But if, for instance, Polly Toynbee comes on to the BBC to talk about the evils of grammar schools, it is only fair to inform the listener than she failed her 11+ so we know where she is coming from. 🙂

Today R4 6:30 news summary main point on the war in Israel-Lebanon the only item mentioned is Israel’s attack on Lebanon. Having followed the Israeli news for two days, I just could not believe my ears. No mention of the near 100 katyusha over all north Israel, not mention of close to a million people spending the night in bombshelters ( life came to a still in this vibrant area especially now during th summer holiday), no mention of the 200 casualties. From Adloyada:

on the evening of the Mumbai bombings, I was listening to the coverage on BBC Radio 4 News. They were speculating about who could be responsible, and they suggested that it was masterminded by local mafia, criminal gangs. There was not even a suggestion of radical Islamist terror groups, and Al Qaeda, despite the obvious modus operandi links. The BBC News web site of that day and the next (since updated) carried only that suggestion. Only yesterday did they begin to suggest a possible Al Qaeda connection. The US authorities are much clearer in their suspicions:

In Washington, a US official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the events were still unfolding said the coordination of Tuesday’s attacks and the targeting of trains at peak travel times match the modus operandi of two Islamic groups active in India during the last several years: Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad. The US government has designated both terrorist organisations and considers them affiliates of al-Qaeda.

And so to the continuing stories of the Hamas-launched attacks on Israeli, resulting in the kidnap of Corporal Gilad Shalit, and the Hezbollah attack which resulted in two further kidnappings of Israeli soldiers, as well as eight deaths of Israeli soldiers.

To read or listen to the BBC coverage, you could get the clear impression that Israel has initiated the fighting and continues to do so. On this morning’s BBC Radio Today programme, the interviewer referred to Corporal Shalit as having been “captured in Gaza”, when in fact he was abducted from Israeli territory by Hamas-linked terrorists who tunneled their way through from Gaza.

The BBC News web page report for today presents the fighting on the Lebanese Israeli border as if it was the result of an Israeli-initiated offensive, during which two Israeli soldiers were captured, and does not mention that this happened as the result of a Hezbollah raid into Israeli territory.

Melanie Phillips takes the BBC to task in her latest post:

Syria and Iran wage war on Israel
    […]
… the reaction of the British and western media and chattering classes to Israel’s current behaviour is beyond farce. So blinded are they by their fixation that Israel is the aggressor and regional bully that even when Israel is plainly attacked in acts of unprovoked aggression they still blame Israel for causing the crisis.

The BBC, as ever, has been playing a sickening role in this propaganda. On the World Service, it denied the fact that Israeli soldiers had been kidnapped on Israel’s own soil, calling the kidnapping of Cpl Shalit a ‘capture in (sic) Gaza’ and the kidnap of the two soldiers in the north of Israel a capture in ‘south Lebanon’.

It has repeatedly presented the Israelis as the aggressors. BBC News Online described Israel’s actions as a ‘major offensive’. On the Today programme this morning (0810) it blamed Israel for ‘upping the ante’. The assumption is — fantastically —that it is Israel, rather than Iran, which is the danger to peace. Israel, it seems, must therefore not be allowed to defend itself when rockets are fired at its towns and cities. When it does so it is called ‘collective punishment’ or a ‘disproportionate response’ involving ‘massive collateral damage’, as was said on BBC Radio Four’s Moral Maze last night.
