    Lots more to come out about this new attempted bomb outrage in London so much of what the BBC and others do say is little more that speculation, perhaps in some cases informed speculation though I have my doubts that Farouq Gardener would reach ‘informed’.

    Interesting that though Farouq (and probably others) have mentioned Iraq which is clearly speculation no such mention has been made for Rushdie and Pakistan after a direct threat for this was made only days ago.
    Either would still likely be Al Qaeda or their hangers on.
    I’m not saying its so but we’re talking speculation and the heart of theatre and literary land would appear in some ways the obvious target, I wonder if Salman actually lives round there.
    Still it wouldn’t suit the BBC agenda so no speculation there then…

    You see they can do it on their own

    BBC Worldwide announced record profits of £111.1 million before tax, up 24 per cent on last year • and twice as much as the £55.2 million achieved in 2004-05.

    But then again, assured tax revenues of £3bn pa may make it easier & cheaper to arrange this –

    The BBC’s commercial arm wants to use its £350 million borrowing facility to buy television production and magazine businesses in key international markets, as part of a plan to double profits over five years.

    wa as saaalam ul alikem brothers …

    Khatoon Jaqki was just on Al Beeb … “whats clear is a potentially viable explosive device was discovered in the early hours of this morning” ….

    WTF is a ‘potentially viable’ explosive device? How many unviable explosive devices has the government come accross?

    This all begs the question, when will Imam Brooun’s adopt Foreign policy as part of a true Islamic government!

    http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/643629.stm

    only this can lead to a potentially viable Palestinian State (I.e. one Islamic State in all of historic Palestine!? ) … anything less will not be viable! and will not give the rights of the Arabs to them …

    Al Beeb reporter Khanum Jooun we now understand … the ambulance crew called to the Tiger Tiger ladies nights (the slags) saved hundreds and possibly thousands of lives …. 1000s of lives … now thats what I call a viable bomb!

    Further, Gardner was at great pains to mention a similarity with Iraq, just to make sure that the viewer makes the connection – its ‘cos of the war.

    As several posters have pointed out al beeb is trying to play up a ‘connection’ between the bomb and the Iraq war in a kind of pre-emptive piece of spin. They totally gloss over why the war in Iraq would lead to an attack on London night club goers. Someone should remind them the Bali nightclub bombing happened well before the war in Iraq. As usual al beeb doesn’t or rather refuses to understand the Islamist mind set.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_ne…ics/ 6248508.stm

    Paul Reynolds’ opening paragraph – a classic example of BBC priorities; will the new Foreign Secretary stick it to Israel and the United States? Can he ‘tell it like it is’ without being accused of being anti-semitic? Oh yes he can – because he’s JEWISH!!

    So our Paul (it’s a long time since you ventured over here!) reveals that in his opinion, what needs to be said to the US and Israel is hostile enough to attract the accusation of being anti-semitic. What a surprise. A BBC correspondent who thinks Israel needs a good dressing down.

    And then there’s Paul’s fearless analysis of Mark Malloch Brown’s appointment. He was critical of the Bush administration. So he will clearly be a GOOD THING.

    Did you leave anything out there, Paul? Anything about Malloch Brown’s denial of the demonstrable haemorrhage of UN monies on his watch, for instance? Or his defence of the UN over the Oil for Food scandal. I won’t go on. Melanie Phillips has done this so much better than I could. You can read it here, Paul.

    But hey, what does this matter. For a journalist suffering from BBC-knee-jerk syndrome, these appointments will be a welcome change.

    If you pay close heed to the words of Farooq Gardner of Arabia and other great analysts at Al Beeb you will see bob that this is clearly the work of outraged Irish/ETA militants-civic activists who are fed up to their back teeth about our evil Foreign policy in Iraq and Afganistan and Palestine. It is possible that the car bomb was being driven down the Haymarket to be parked near Whitehall or Westminster.

    A witness is said to have seen smoke coming from the car. The driver had crash-parked it and run off, perhaps because he thought it was about to explode.

    This is all just speculation, but a political target seems more likely than a nightclub, in this particular week. Islamic terrorists are more likely suspects than Irish Republicans, at this stage.

    Why would Paul Reynolds note Milliband’s Jewish roots in this context unless he thinks that Milliband ought to be giving Israel a good dressing down?

    There were plenty of members of the Labour Party (and other parties) who criticised israel during last year’s Hezbollah war, and I don’t remember any serious commentators • politicians who support Israel, for example • attributing their remarks to anti-semitism.

    As for the “Any criticism of Israel means you’re anti-semitic, so shut up!” accusation – Israel’s opponents use the “Zionists play the race card to silence those who criticize Israel!” argument quite as much.

    And it’s just as daft.

    Sky News sources say one of the first police officers on the scene of the London West End car bomb may have saved dozens of lives by diffusing the explosives before the bomb squad arrived.

    It is believed the quick-thinking cop recognised that the car was wired to blow up, jumped in and disconnected the trigger device, thought to be a mobile phone.

    This backs up an eye-witness account of a police officer briefly entering the metallic green Mercedes before running for cover.

    On the Editors blog in relation to the BBC’s political coverage:

    * At 11:13 PM on 28 Jun 2007,
    * Patrick Higgins wrote:

    I want to complain about today’s coverage of the appointment of the new cabinet. Your editors and correspondents show a great deal of ignorance of constitutional practice and history. The most absurd error concerns the presence of two brothers in the cabinet. This happened twice in the twentieth century. The internet story reports the Chamberlains who were both members of the cabinet between November 1924 and June 1929. The internet story suggests ‘both’ went on to lead the Conservative Party in fact Austen had been Leader 1921-22 and Neville became Leader 1937-40. There is, however, a later example of brothers serving in cabinet. Indeed it was under Neville Chamberlain who by appointing Lord Stanley to the cabinet as Dominions Secretary on 16 May 1938 created the situation as Oliver Stanley, Lord Stanley was already a cabinet minister (President of the Board of Trade). Your commentators also keep saying that Lord Chancellors have always been peers, wrong: Sir Thomas More was Lord Chancellor and he was not a peer. There is also a suggestion that it is a novelty for ministers not in the cabinet to attend cabinet when their portfolio is discussed but this has been happening throughout the twentieth century. All these ‘facts’ can be easily checked but your highly paid editors and correspondents do not seem check anything they say. At one stage Jon Sopel was claiming after the cabinet had been announced that nobody had kept the same portfolio, forgetting Des Browne at Defence. Why do we have to tolerate this ignorance ?”

    The real reason is.

    “Critics of urban planning say it should come as no surprise that two of the residential areas in the region worst affected by Monday’s heavy rain • Catcliffe, near Rotherham, and Kingswood in Hull • were built on flood plains.
