, so the second most important Entertainment story, in their view, is the stunning revelation that Theron ‘wants US soldiers home’ – a masterpiece of investigative reporting. Quite coincidentally, she’s also plugging her latest film that just happens to be about an American soldier who goes missing after serving in Iraq.
Meanwhile, just for balance, we have this tacked on to the end of the same article:
Meanwhile, director Ken Loach also premiered his new film, It’s A Free World at the festival.
The movie takes a look at the exploitation of migrant workers in the UK.
Loach said he hoped it would generate attention on the plight of immigrants – legal or otherwise – who have flocked to the country from eastern Europe in recent years.
“On the one hand people say the economy couldn’t survive without the immigrant workforce. On the other, the right wing is saying, ‘Get these people out of our country’. It’s hypocrisy,” he said.
A free advert for the leftie film-maker’s latest tosh, and a platform to express his bigotry about his political opponents. Funnily enough Ken, the people who say that we need immigrants for the sake of our economy are not the same as those who wish to get rid of immigrants. I know that’s a complicated idea Ken, but it’s not hypocrisy when two different groups express different views, is it? Though of course what you’re ignoring completely is that most people just want, and would be happy with, some form of reasonable control over immigration to the UK – something that our Labour luvvie government has failed to manage.
P.S. The most important Entertainment story, at least according to the BBC, is BBC’s DJ held ‘over order breach’, which isn’t a story I want to comment upon beyond the dodgy headline. Surely it should just be BBC DJ – they do have more than one DJ on the tellytax-teat don’t they?
Thank you to David for the Theron link.
Update: Ms. Theron’s comments are now more important than the BBC DJ in jail story, at least according to Views Online.
You won’t believe this, but the story has been bumped up to the top spot on the entertainment page.
Clearly, “actress thinks stuff” and “director has rant” is more important than “BBC’s DJ arrested”…
Thanks for posting this – my first one 🙂

Andrew,
I think you have got it wrong.
What Charlize Theron said is that the troops in Iraq ‘are doing a very, very important job and it’s a dangerous one. Hopefully they can come back and be looked after, that’s the least we can do for them’, which is the opposite to what the BBC headline implies.
On the Andy Kershaw stalking story why does the BBC need to present ‘over order breach’ in quotations implying their is some doubt about things?

It’s even stranger when you consider that Theron is South African, not American.

The Beeb must have some sort of list of leftie right-on guests it calls on when in need of comments.
Take saturday night’s programme about British Films, on BBC2. Last night’s was about war films.
Apart from the sneery commentary, saying films like “Reach For The Skies” contained “unbelievable heroics….” (and I am sure the Beeb would say it was meant to be tongue in cheek..blah blah) there among the pundits commenting on said films was that well known expert film historian…. Billy Bragg!

Hi Ralph, I did wonder about that ambiguity too (the difference between ‘troops out now’ and ‘come home safe when they do’) – as usual, one has to read between the lines with the BBC – we only get told what they wish to tell us, rather than her comments in full – doubtless due to a shortage of space on the BBC Interweb 🙂

Ken Loach is a communist windbag. He always has been and he always will be.

Andrew- there’s an unspoken understanding I think between the likes of Theron and the BBC. They know she’s making an anti-war comment while trying to avoid sounding like an anti-American. They know she needs publicity along the anti-war lines consistent with her film. She knows what she needs to say to attract the publicity she needs from the anti-war media. Neat little arrangement.

A free advert for the leftie film-maker’s latest tosh, and a platform to express his bigotry about his political opponents.
Thats not all, on BBC radio 4 the other day (Film Programme) we had a grand leftie film seminar, with Ken Loach and assorted neophytes present(including BBC presenter/worshipper) all pontificating on working-class realism, and seeking after “big stories”- money permitting of course. Strange how they seem to think that government grants should be available for them to do their important narrative work, rather than going to the market place like the rest of us.

Theron? Theron?
Maybe an obscure french politician i hadn`t heard of?
A minor american democrat, unheard of in the uk? Possibly a member of some minor but involved middle eastern government?
Naah! an effin` actress!
What with her superior political insights and vast knowledge of middle eastern politics, not to mention the military training they must have given her in stage school,i suppose if an actress tells everyone to get get out of Iraq we`d better start packing the guns away!
BBC still got it`s head stuck up the barking spider of celebrity.

If you find the idea of pompous liberal actors telling the world what to do • at the point of a gun • go and see TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE. It’s very silly, but very funny.
