What a relief!

The BBC has cancelled its planned Climate Relief day. Messrs Horrocks and Barron weighed in with criticism of the event and it’s been shelved. Barron (Newsnight Editor) came up with the very quotable, almost Paxmanesque, “It is absolutely not the BBC’s job to save the planet”.

Well, that’s the spin, anyway. My guess is the BBC feel that because the science is not at all that settled, they don’t want to overextend. They can always save the world another day, after all.

Hat-tips to Damian Thompson, who is gratified, and Iain Dale, who says “well done” to the Beeb. Not sure congratulations are in order here.

Oh yes, and I shouldn’t forget, Andrew had some good thoughts about this topic earlier.

Well, here’s one more you can add, from the Indy: Global warming: Too hot to handle for the BBC:

    http://environment.independent.co.uk/climate_change/article2934318.ece

The text seems to be almost interchangeable with the BBC Online piece:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6979596.stm

Where did this originate (I’m presuming the BBC piece) that it is shared so (pretty lazy journalism by the Indy, in which case) between these separate media entities?

I remain less than impressed that any criticism of this particular jolly was just a ‘right wing conspiracy’, and to try and paint it that way is serving the environmental cause poorly.

There were many, like me, who just didn’t feel this was the best way to do it.

I have a really vain hope this will not simply turn into yet another fruitless slanging match between those who have massive agendas pro and con the notion of MMGW and ways to mitigate adverse effects, at the expense of reasoned ways to discuss, move on and DO something that can have an impact that can still work within the current climate of debate… or debate of climate.

Telling me what I am, when I am not, especially in knee-jerk frustration, is not the best way to do it.

If we want the truth to emerge the whole issue needs to be de-politicised, so cancelling Climate Relief is a good move. Horrocks and Barron were right to protest. Congratulations to them at any rate.

I think it may have dawned on the BBC that if we must ‘cut back’ to save on emissions, then an organisation that exists only to pollute (how many million air miles?)- at a cost of £140 per household – should be the first, easiest and most popular cut to make.

Lecturing self licking lollipops we do not need – only assuming of course that CO2 is a problem!
