TEA WITH THE TALIBAN?

Wonder if you managed to wade through Frank Gardner’s latest paean to the wonders of Arab diplomacy here? Yes, US and UK armed forces risk life and limb in the dangerous parts of Afghanistan fighting the Taliban but like all good leftists Frank believes that “winning hearts and minds” is the name of the game and this is where troops from the United Arab Emirates score, delivering humanitarian aid to their fellow Muslims and, on occasion, even fighting their way out of Taliban ambushes. Frank manages to get us some Afghan comment..

“People are not afraid that Emiratis will harm their religion, or disrespect the mosque or burn the mosque, things of this nature,” Governor Patan says. “People are very friendly with them. Everybody will drag them in for lunch or for dinner.” These are hearts-and-minds operations at their most effective – drinking tea with Afghans, discussing what help can be provided, Frank gushes.

The problem is that drinking tea is not going to do anything to stop the Taliban, much as the BBC might wish otherwise. This is a war. I also reject the implied slur concerning the behaviour of US/UK troops in the quote he provides. This is subtle character assassination of our own military and how they behave. Now I applaued all efforts made to combat Islamic extremism and in that regard the efforts of the UAE soldiers are to be welcomed but the likes of Frank Gardner is VERY selective who he lavishes praise upon – and the US and UK armed forces do not fall into this elite camp. Maybe if we sent in a battalion of aromatherapists and stress councillors Frank might take notice of the gallantry of OUR soldiers?

Check out this latest vomit-inducing piece from the BBC ‘news’ website:

    “MINISTERS GO SWINGING INTO ACTION

Children’s Secretary Ed Balls took to the sky to encourage parents to let their children out to play.

He leapt onto a rope swing at a play park in south London to help publicise progress in the government’s Children’s Plan.

Not to be left behind, Culture Minister Andy Burnham also went back to his youth and jumped on the swing – to the delight of local school children.”

    Pass the sick bucket.

What Mr. Garderer – who lost the use of his legs in Saudi Arabia, another name for Afghanistan – seems to fail to understand is that you can try to win hearts and minds till you’re blue in the face, but it doesn’t get over the fact that you’re an infidel, and so, you occupy the level – one below women – of Jews, homosexuals, apostates &c.
But yeah, I object to the use of BLU-82s (Daisy Cutters). They should use Paveways instead. They’re much cheaper.

You linked pages that shouted out F*ck YOu you’ve gone searching my home page and accused me of having nice friends, I do not know the lion heart you speak off. If I supported the BNP i’d stand over it. They are perfectly legal, with no armed wing AFAIK, they are electable in some areas of britain, and what of it if I were. But I’m not. That however is not the issue. You went pointing the finger rather than ask politely after being defeated in an argument.

Just as a point of interest, I think dropping Daisy-cuttesr on Bin Laden and his associates is a very good idea. I did not link anything of the sort. You’ve gone and searched and linked stuff in your own head.

google cache is not in my head, and you can’t stealth edit it. You did link to Lionheart’s blog (see link above) and I’m simply amazed that you don’t just admit it as a mistake and get it over with.

I have no wish to carry on any conversations with you at all.

Our conversation began when I questioned your claim that Frank Gardner had been crippled by a bomb in Afghanistan – you defended that mistake too.

I honestly don’t give a fig who you support politically and I don’t care whether Lionheart has since withdrawn his support for the BNP. My point isn’t about Lionheart or the BNP. What I do care about at this stage is being called a liar when the reality is that the liar is you.

Once you realised that in fact there was a link to a questionable site on your blog you denied it, edited the page in an attempt to hide the evidence, and then called me a liar and worse.

I’m sorry but that sort of behavior is the lowest of the low, it’s dishonest in the extreme and you know it.

Great post David. I noticed Gardener’s piece a couple of days again and was struck by the lavish praise he gave the UAE’s muslim troops – a stark contrast to the way Al-Beeb normally write about the British & US forces out there. Good point about the “hearts and minds” approach that Al-Beeb favour over actually fighting a war. Without US & British troops to give them protection the UAE soldiers would end up being slaughtered by the Taliban for not being islamic enough. The sub-text, of course, of Gardener’s report was that only muslims can solve problems for other muslims (although that hasn’t worked out so well in Sudan has it?)

Three quotes from the piece showing Al-Beeb’s bias…

“Unlike most western military officers, he has spent over two years getting to know these villagers,”

This quote from Gardener’s report smacks of bias – what evidence does he have that “most western military officers” haven’t spent time getting to know Afghan villagers ? And again notice the casual way that Gardner accepts the anti-infidel bigotry of the Afghan muslims. Imagine how Al-BBC would report
British villagers saying they would only be policed by Christian police officers and not muslim ones ?

“People are not afraid that Emiratis will harm their religion, or disrespect the mosque or burn the mosque, things of this nature,” Governor Patan says.
The implication from the Governor and one that Gardener does nothing to challenge is that Western troops disrespect and destroy mosques. All the evidence shows the opposite – that Western forces have gone out of their way not to upset the poor sensitive Islamic feelings of the Afghans or attack their mosques (unlike Sunni muslims who seem to have no qualms in destroying Shia Muslim mosques in Iraq or Pakistan).

“These are hearts-and-minds operations at their most effective – drinking tea with Afghans, discussing what help can be provided.

The Emirati approach is to meet their fellow Muslims’ religious needs first, then build schools and clinics later”

Gardener’s opinion presented as fact. What evidence does he have that this is the most effective method “hearts and minds operation”? And again, can one imagine Gardener giving such a glowing report to an American aid effort?

    Terry Johnson,

Thanks for the explanation. I still think that the claims of bias are on the most part unfounded about this particular report, however, I also accept that Mr Gardner has not helped himself with his poor choice of words.

  40. Terry Johnson says:

Maybe this is the kind of islamic “hearts and minds” campaign that would win over Afghan villagers…

“A couple accused of adultery are reported to have been stoned to death in northern Pakistan by the Taleban.

The pair ran away together but after being hunted down they were brought before a Taleban court in the Mohmand tribal district.

A Taleban spokesman said the couple had confessed and were then sentenced to be put to death by stoning.”

If only the couple had sat down to tea with the Taleban or helped with their religious needs then this kind of thing could have been avoided.

Hi Bio, how’s your sunny spot? 8)
We’re only just getting out of the minus temperatures now.

As a matter of interest I caught most of Gardner’s report on BBC World.
It came across as a puff piece. Full of inuendo. The only locals interviewed were those that said, “Don’t like the Americans, but love our Muslim brothers.”
Gardner hawks himself as a ‘Middle East security expert’, but my own experiences, admittedly from the 70’s, were that Gulf and Saudi soldiers weren’t really up to it. Not at all reliable, especially in conflict situations. The Omani’s were slightly better, but they were bolstered by Baluchis and Pakistanis.
I suspect, however, that access to the UAE contingent was done with the approval of the US.

    Flawed Logic, yes sorry it’s on Al_beeb’s S.Asia pages…

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7327248.stm

The report then goes on to say..

“A Taleban spokesman said the couple confessed to adultery before a Taleban court, and were stoned to death that night.

The Taleban have killed people in this way in Afghanistan in the past, but this is believed to be only the second time that they have done so in Pakistan.”

Strangely we don’t learn from Al-BBC if this is a punishment approved of by Islamic law. If it is doesn’t it somewhat contradict Frank Gardner’s gushing description of the joys of a shared Islamic faith when talking about the “muslim bond” between UAE soldiers and Afhgan villagers ?

Following on from my comment above concerning the stoning of a couple in Pakistan…I wonder why Al-BBC didn’t run this story on it’s world news headline page instead of a sob story about a Hamas “activist” dying in PA police custody? Don’t tell me that Al-Beeb think the death of an anti-semite is more newsworthy than the stoning to death of two innocent people. Here we are in the 21st Century and a story that should be major news – a story that shows the Taleban to be murderous scumbags – is hidden away while the Hamas scumbag gets all the publicity.

‘ No I didn’t. I was interested to see who you linked to, that’s all. I cast an eye over your posts’ title and didn’t see anything that I thought was worth reading in any depth.’
Thats a lie, and its clear from this very thread. LOL.

    YOU posted this.
I see you have a (broken) link to the infamous BNP supporting Lionheart blog.

    “Interesting” friends you have.

    Hi TPO,

Spring is warming up nicely down here, sunny and max of 20ºC plus lately, by August we’ll be into the high 30s.

    Wasn’t it our birthdays recently?

I saw it on BBC World too and noted that though the Emiratis had some nice kit they wouldn’t venture out unless it was safe for them, so even being brother Arabs doesn’t seem to offer them all that much immunity.

They even insisted on having most of their faces blurred out for fear of being accused of collaborating with The Great Satan by their own countrymen. So much for Arab unity.

Steve, good point. A good news team would find out any link between the charged men and describe them accordingly . Hmmm, what shared link did these eight men have ? Where they all members of any particular grouping ? Did the mystery something that linked them have anything to do with their intended actions ? Did the mystery something advocate killing those who weren’t like the eight men? Maybe Al-BBC should watch “Fitna” .Hmm , which book tells it’s followers to use “terror” against the unfaithful ?
