I was reading over on Drudge that whilst US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama may be struggling to nudge ahead of his Republican rival John McCain in polls at home, people across the world want him in the White House, a BBC poll said! Naturally. All 22 countries covered in the BBC poll would prefer to see Senator Obama elected US president ahead of Republican John McCain. In 17 of the 22 nations, people expect relations between the US and the rest of the world to improve if Senator Obama wins. Looks like the rest of the world could be in a for a big disappointment if all those polls the BBC isn’t so keen on are right.
WE ARE THE WORLD.

This is already all over the blogs here in the states. The mood in America has changed a lot in the last 10 days. A real feeling that McCain/Palin can bring real reform to the Republican party has surfaced and a real excitement I’ve not seen for years is brewing in the Republican party. The Democrats are shaking more than a Chihuahua right now. Every attack they have made at Mc or Palin has bounced back and exposed the ugly truth about themselves. Looks to me like obama is sliding down the john kerry hole.

I just don’t know what to think. I generally vote for the Republican candidate but now that Gordon Brown says he’s for Obama, I’m facing a tough decision. Will he still be in office by January 20th?
Months ago I faced a similar problem.
Is there any more reliable way to choose a world leader than to see how many Germans will go out in the streets and chant a politicians name? I’m sure thats a first.
Gee, maybe if the Guardian or BBC would just get their readers or viewers to contact me and explain how stupid I would have to be to vote McCain/Palin, my decision would be easier.

kind of related to obama – as he’s a socialist – this is a quote by gordon brown , that actually CONFIRMS that socialism doesnt work.
and he’s said it.
“We need to be honest with ourselves: while poverty has been reduced
and the rise in inequality halted, social mobility has not improved in
Britain as we would have wanted”

when you read that quote just bear one thing in mind – you can have liberty , or you can have equality.
but you can never have both.
france and the uk have gone for equality. america has gone for freedom.
there is not a single country in world history that has managed to do both.
read that deluded quote again – our dear leader and Obama both believe that you can have equality AND freedom.
aint gonna happen. they are both living in fantasy land.

B-Bbc commentators exposed the reporting of that poll as dishonest (via ABC’s full disclosure rather than the condensed version the BBC released) a year ago. Who is going to believe the Bbc and their politicised, liar polls now?
The democrats in Congress and the Senate continually brought up that “BBC poll” to discredit General Petraeus. They all look like suckers now, thanks Bbc!

It seems Brown has publicly backed Obama – see http://www.order-order.com/ & other blogs. This is outrageous interference. We wouldn’t like it if Bush openly supported a candidate in our elections. Mind you, everything Brown supports turns to dust, so it could be good news for McCain.

It’s interesting that Downing St is currently trying to spin its way out of this gaffe by claiming the article was written by an underling.
Can you imagine the fuss the BBC would be making if Mrs Palin had had articles published under he own name which she hadn’t actually written?

Poor Obama; his campaign is coming apart and just when he thinks it can’t get any worse, Gordon Brown announces (presumably from a locked and barricaded room in Downing Street) his support. Talk about a weight around the neck.

This is a mega-expensive European project, so naturally the BBC has been pushing it all week. They are already claiming a “success”, even though all they have done is switched the thing on and completed one lap.
It is the equivalent of someone claiming Lewis Hamilton has won the F1 Championship after completing one lap of the first race.
BTW, I wonder if this had been a US project, would there instead have been lots of articles about what the money could have been spent on intead? It seems when the big bucks are spent by Europeans, poverty in Africa can go hang.

Erm, that a person elected by an electorate of 600,000 has vastly more legitimacy than a rigged poll of 23,000?

The first US election I ever followed was in 1960. And I remember that the BBC – and the dearly-missed Manchester Guardian – made it clear that a key reason that Kenndy won was through vote-rigging in Cook County, Chicago. (Those were th days when the BBC rported both sides fairly, warts and all)
So I have always had the perception that politics in Chicago are deeply corrupt.
Now where did Obama come from ?

From the Beeb’s article, last paragraph:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/09/09/2360240.htm?section=world
“A total of 23,531 people … were interviewed face-to-face or by telephone in July and August 2008 for the poll.”
That is, the poll predates Palin’s nomination. It reflects an old situation, when 80% of what the media informed people worldwide concerned Obama. It is totally irrelevant for the present, with the more balanced exposure forced on the media by the nomination of Palin.
Trust the BBC to hide the dates of the poll in the last paragraph. They don’t actually lie, Noooooooooooo. But they do their best to hide truth.

What has the size of Alaska’s electorate got to do with it?
The poll was conducted in July/August before Sarah Palin came into the limelight. It was assessing people’s views on McCain v. Obama. No mention of Palin or Alaska.
It showed that in all of the 22 countries the majority of people were in favour of Obama rather than McCain. In the U.K. overwhelmingly so.
Irrelevant, of course, as far as the U.S. election is concerned.
On what basis do you claim that the poll was rigged? Have you looked at the questions in the poll? They are HERE

A sense of th new fervour in the McCain campaign – from Ohio. Fervour means party volunteer workers getting the vote out. Fervour means trying to persuade friends and neighbours to have a fair look at McCain /Palin. Fervour means making a greater effort to show people the manifold problems with Obama.
Ohio is one of the handful of big battleground states that Obama MUST win to get to the White House.
Right now I don’t fancy his chances there.

While people in any given country have diverse sources of information on events in their own country, for foreign countries they depend more on the MSM. This is why all this poll reflects is the influence of the MSM on otherwise uninformed public.
Untill two weeks ago, the information these people received concerned primarily Obama. The situation is now different.
Let the Beeb perform another poll.

Anon: That poll from 22 Countries is totally pointless. No one knows what the level of election coverage has been (in fact if it’s like the BBC it will be all pro Osama)
The only poll that counts is the one the American people take in November.

Hugh drew attention to a particularly appalling BBC story about Sarah Palin some days ago.
I was so incensed, I complained via the BBC complaints webpage.
Here is my complaint and the answer I got back today:
Complaint:
This story contains the following wording:
“- the conservatism hovering in the background, visible in the
presence of her Downs syndrome child, the child she insisted on having despite her knowledge of his disability.”
These words, the tone and the context all convey a message that the
writer believes Sarah Palin should have aborted her pregnancy and should
not have brought her son into the world.
The use of the word “insisted” is particularly objectionable. When
combined with “despite her knowledge”, it is deplorable.
BBC journalists should not let their personal views about abortion
colour their news writing. The rules on impartiality were not properly
observed here. Moreover, there is a taste and decency issue here too: such phrasing can only cause distress to the families of children with
Down’s syndrome.
The BBC reply:
Dear Mr C.
Thank you for your email and the points you raise.
Having spoken to the correspondent, Adam Brookes, he believes that
taken literally the sentence stands, It is possible to “insist” on doing
something positive in the face of pressure to do otherwise. There is
nothing in his text to suggest he is shocked or disapproving of her
decision. And, like it or not, her choosing to have a disabled child has
been interpreted in the US as function of her conservatism and her
‘pro-life’ beliefs. Indeed, the Republican Party is subtly championing
that message.
However, the correspondent acknowledges his phrasing might not have been
the best. With hindsight, putting it differently would have been better
and less open to misinterpretation.
We appreciate your comments
Kind regards
BBC News website.
And here’s my reply to that:
I am not satisfied with the way my complaint has been dealt with. Important parts of my complaint have simply not been addressed. Those that have been addressed have been given only a glib and flippant treatment. I would like my complaint now to be escalated to the next level of the complaints procedure, please.
Also, with regard to your statement: “there is nothing in his text to suggest he is shocked or disapproving”, I have shown the passage to ten friends and colleagues, all of whom are educated to at least first degree level, and two of whom are professionally engaged in teaching English comprehension. Every single one of them interpreted the passage as expressing strong disapproval. The two teachers agreed that anyone who thought otherwise would deserve to fail their GCSE English.
I will report progress.

I wonder if the BBC will report this stinging riposte to Gordon Brown, posted on the McCain Campaign website?
The Coveted Gordon Brown Endorsement
Far be it from this campaign to underestimate the value of an endorsement from British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, but there is one slightly embarassing detail that this endorsement is bound to highlight. According to the report, Brown’s endorsement was tied to a specific policy:
Referring to the anxieties facing voters across the globe during the economic slowdown, [Brown] says: “Around the world, it is progressive politicians who are grappling with these challenges….In the electrifying US Presidential campaign, it is the Democrats who are generating the ideas to help people through more difficult times. To help prevent people from losing their home, Barack Obama has proposed a Foreclosure Prevention Fund to increase emergency pre-foreclosure counselling, and help families facing repossession.”
Obama had championed a Foreclosure Prevention Fund, but sometime late last month he seems to have…changed his position. According to Versionista, a program that allows us to track changes to the Obama website, Senator Obama quietly erased any mention of a Foreclosure Prevention Fund in late August. No new program was offered in its stead.
Does McBean get EVERYTHING wrong?

I love the way they try and lull the reader into thinking it’s a well-spirited “insight” into “who Sarah is” (her family, her glasses, her hunting skills) but turns out to be merely a thinly veiled way for the Beeb to put some left wing talking points into a list without being accused of running a smear job.

Well done. But what a horribly disingenuous response! Brookes’ defense only works if there was any pressure on Gov. Palin to vacuum out the developmentally disabled embryo or fetus. (Although, either the Complaints Dept. Beeboid or Brookes deserves one point back for calling it “something positive”.)
There was no pressure, of course, so the whole thing falls apart.
The only place there was any pressure to abort was in the minds of Beeboids, Leftoid journalists, and Leftoid bloggers.

The poll of 22 countries is a FAKE.
Egypt,Indonesia, Nigeria,Turkey, the UAE, Lebanon, are all Muslim countries and would be over 90% in favour of Obama. To state Kenya which voted 82% must have been from a Muslim district (almost half the country are Muslims is the most pro Obama is lies as no way could it be more than all the Muslim countries.
I could pick 22 countries and get a poll that shows McCain is ahead. The usual crap BBC bias, they are trying everything to influence the world Obama is a God but it only makes BBC more ridiculous.
Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Nigeria, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Turkey, the UAE, Britain and the United States were interviewed face-to-face or by telephone in July and August 2008 for the poll.
The margin in favour of Senator Obama ranged from 9 per cent in India to 82 per cent in Kenya, while an average of 49 per cent across the 22 countries preferred Senator Obama compared with 12 per cent preferring Senator McCain. Some four in 10 did not take a view.

Good stuff your complaints.
I sense the BBC is beginning to realise that it is looking stupid being in the tank so much for Obama. Justin Webb’s report this evening was in a different tone.
My little contribution has been to post a barrage of comments on what Webb has been posting on his BBC blog – which is mostly full of Webb and Obama groupies. I don’t know if he reads the comments – but if he does, he won’t like some of the strong critcism I have made of him.
Collateral fun is annoying the creeps who gather there.
The BBC has a self-interest here. If they carry on appearing anti-McCain, they will not get ready access to McCain or Palin for interviews, now or after the election. If they feel the ground shifting – I think it could be – they will be at risk of being frozen out. For instance because of the tone of Webb’s supercilious interview with Carla Fiorino of TeamMcCain last week.
…………………..
Amusing remark by Chris Hoy of Scotland who won 3 gold medals. A journalist asked him “What does Chris Hoy think of Chris Hoy”

Obama is looking more distraught by the day. He is now advocating that foreign terrorists, in foreign territory, murdering American soldiers should be accorded protection under the US Constitution. (Anyone committing a crime on American soil, citizen or foreigner, has rights deriving from the Constitution. But foreigners committing murder of an American citizen in their own country?) littlegreenfootballs.com has the full story, plus over 1,700 comments on that thread, some of them very entertaining.

Thanks for making the complaint.
DP is right to point out that “insist” only works if everyone around her was shouting at her to abort – I cannot imagine for a minute that she was under any pressure at all to abort the baby.
The BBC reply is a subject in its own right. They start off by sticking to their guns and saying the piece as written was perfect. Then they say the wording could have been better.
This is a classic BBC tactic – schizophrenia under fire.
And don’t forget that these journoes are paid to pick the right words – its their job.
