As a project for the weekend I’ve decided to make a start on the World’s first Beebish/English dictionary. My hope is it will eventually prove an invaluable tool for the audience to better understand the BBC’s news reports – or that I might be able to flog it to the Beeb as a training resource for bucket loads of cash.
I have a few entries below already, but I’d be grateful for suggestions of others* that should be included.
- Australian MP = an Australian Labor politician
- Black MPs = Black Labour MPs
- Daring = Murderous
- Defamatory = Disagreeable
- Far right = Pro-life
- Liberal (in the US sense) = the consensus view in the UK
- Men = Islamist terrorists
- Plumbers = Islamist terrorists
- Republican official = a Republican official
- US mayor = a Democratic US mayor
* with links if possible.
Hugh, this is excellent. And it’s a start on exactly the sort of systematic documenting of bias we need. However, what would make the post even more compelling would be to have, alongside a story that makes no reference to the Party affiliation of the disgraced Democrat mayor, another story in which an equivalent Republican malefactor is identified as Republican in clear terms. That’s irrefutable evidence.
But I know how much work that would involve, and this is a great post.

Mikewhineliberal: unfortunately your alternative lexicon can’t really be denied, though many of us here despise the terms that get thrown around by some of the more rabid contributors, but in any case, please don’t let that distract you from the fact that those contributors are not publicly-funded, are not news organisations but private individuals, have every right to their opinions, and do not operate under a charter which legally obliges them to impartiality, neutrality, and which forbids them from broadcasting their own personal opinions and calling it “news”, in return for which, anyone refusing to fund them gets fined a grand or sent to prison.
You can see that, whatever shortcomings certain individual commenters may have, that really has no bearing on whether or not the BBC breaks its charter commitment to neutrality every single day.
So why don’t you address the issue?

JohnA: Yes this classic snippet
“…The debate over whether a symbol of destruction should be restored will continue; the team now planning the next flight are convinced the Vulcan is a potent piece of living history reminding today’s young of how near the world came to the brink…”
No mention of th eCommie bastards that would have happily wiped out out.
And I wonder who is debating this? Not the general public of course, but the liberal Islington lefties who’d rather have had a statue of Stalin restored no doubt.

“racists” – working class
example here.. at the bottom – about who the Nazis were popular with

note how explicit references to working class support is left out.
(which of course would not fit with the Gramscian rewriting of history when it comes to the NSDAP…)

How about some BBC grammar?
To the BBC, adding “Israeli” into the sentence makes any military action a possible War Crime. For a like-with-like comparison, compare:

By the way, “broke the truce” was an accusation a BBC news website report flung at David Cameron when he ventured to criticise the government over aspects of the banking crisis.
