Dan the Man

Hands up everyone who wants a thread just about Daniel Hannan.
Haven’t we exhausted the subject yet? By the time it gets going the BBC will have reported it. Or some of it.
Surely the BBC will be forced to mention it in a minute, even if only because of the ‘viral’ aspect. Bias by omission will then have to be downgraded to bias by sluggishness, then bias by selective editing, bias by dismissive editorials, then just bias; then it will be buried. Bias by premature burial.
Oh well. I suppose 600.000 youtube hits does deserve this thread.

I know he comes across as bonkers and does go on and on, but is there not a grain of truth in what Atlas says? Well, some of it anyway.

Yes, there definitely are elites that like to withhold information to keep us dumb and tighten their grip on the worlds capital, and generally do things in a cosy, backroom, undemocratic way.

I agree with Atlas’ point that the BBC/elites really are not on any side of the fence politically, and are not pro-Muslim. They are people that are simply divisive not integrative, and exploit perceived conflicts between groups for their own personal benefit.

This type loves to exploit anything with uncertainty (financial market trends, climate patterns etc) to consolidate their power and provide benefits to their own kind. It has less to do with any sincere benevolence.

I think it’s Atlas’ long-winded approach that gets up peoples’ backs, not the gist of what he is saying…

I am afraid that I disagree with you on one point, leaving Atlas aside ,this site has demonstrated on occasions too numerous to mention that the BBC is institutionally pro-muslim, anti-christian and, most strongly, anti-semitic.

Back on thread – still no real mention of the million plus hits clip in the Guardian Media site – or even its New Media page – but theres lots of blogs about the Apprentice — says it all doesnt it?!
—forget the content – maybe they just cant stand clear thinking and considered speech — is this whole thing a reaction to PR driven media in general? — i do hope so – for Saturday night mind-numbing telly entertainment approaches (apart from Harry Hill of course).

Even the responses from illiterate sounding half-wit US surfing dude types seem to be crying out for eloquence…..lets have some more….

The Daily Politics has the cheek to say that Hannan is an MEP no-one has heard of, when he was a guest on their own programme just last week! Do they think that has already gone down the memory hole?

On that occasion, Andrew Brillo Pad Neill tried to ambush him with a comment allegedly made by one of the Conservative’s new Euro partners, to the effect that the election of Obama was a defeat for the white man. The obvious inference was that Hannan is happy to consort with racists. Hannan kept his cool and simply asked Brillo Pad a few questions:

Q:What was the name of the person alleged to have made this comment?

    A: Dunno

Q: What party is he from?

    A: Dunno

Q: What country is he from?

    A: Dunno.

Hannan wiped the floor with Brillo and his clumsy attempt at a smear, without being rude or raising his voice. It was no surprise to me that he dealt with Gurning Gordon in the same precise, deadly manner. The guy is a class act.

    Atlas shrugged:

Just read the comment and tend to agree. All leftist leaner’s think that being intelligent means thay have common sense. Unfortunately it seem to be the opposite. It is most apparent in politics where a rightist will acknowledge the wrongs of the Tory government, the leftists can never criticise Labour ie a rightist can see both sides of an argument without complete bias whereas a leftist completely blanks out common sense if it is too critical of Labour.

    Janet Daley today:

Dan Hannan shames the BBC and proves need for broadcasting freedom

Yes indeed, Dan Hannan has become a global internet phenomenon. And he is absolutely right to say that the stupendous impact of his speech proves that the web is a new force in the political game. But it is also true, as so many commenters and bloggers have noted, that this entire incident constitutes a shameful note in British broadcasting history – perhaps even a turning point. For this splendid speech and all the dramatic significance of a prime minister having to face a relentless critique across a democratic chamber, was ignored not just by the BBC but by all of the mainstream television and radio news media in this country. To put the final twist on this ignominious story, Fox News in the US – for whom British domestic politics are not generally a top priority – both carried the speech and gave Dan a lengthy interview.

Belatedly, and presumably out of sheer embarassment, one BBC programme, The Daily Politics showed a brief clip of the speech followed by a discussion between two bloggers – the whole segment being designed to depict this phenomenon as a rather amusing internet story rather than a political one. On the BBC website, the item is now being carried under a headline implying that an obscure MEP has become a surprise hit on the web by attacking Gordon Brown: so Dan’s speech is categorised as a kind of weird popular oddity, like a skate-boarding duck. But the really significant thing to remember is that it was not just the BBC that systematically ruled his performance out: all of the news and current affairs programmes on the terrestrial and digital channels did the same. (Channel Four’s seven o’clock news eventually made an effort, on very similar lines to The Daily Politics: this was a story about the power of the internet.)

What must we conclude? That there is a pernicious consensus in news broadcasting about what matters and what should be conveyed to the public. It has very little to do with what the public wishes to know and hear. It has a great deal to do with the regulation of news broadcasting which stipulates a statutory “neutrality”: what this amounts to is a narrow set of criteria for what counts as being acceptable and of mainstream concern. You can interpret this as journalistic laziness, cowardice, lack of imagination or something more sinister – but we have now had a quite dramatic illustration of how pervasive and restricting it is. It is time that we liberated news broadcasting – particularly on radio and the digital channels – to be as politically lively and differentiated as it is in the US. Then you could choose your news broadcaster just as you do your newspaper, on the basis of its convictions. Maybe then we would have a chance of seeing and hearing things that, at the moment, nobody wants us to know about.

You were going so well until you suddenly took off and went into orbit with the bit about David Icke as a papist.

I don’t mind Atlas’s posts and I don’t like how some posters address him.

PS: Atlas, Should I take the plunge? I am thinking of buying a property – a wee house in the country – if anybody is providing mortgages these days. The price does seem a bit steep in the present market but it is in a nice place on a quiet lane and not overlooked. No houses in front, behind, or to the sides – just fields of farmland. Ah, bliss!

When was the last time Atlas shrugged talked about BBC bias? Stating time and again that they’re all part of the Bilderburg/Rothschild Cabal (who seem to have disenfranchised the Freemasons, no?) is not the same thing as what this blog is about. Even if he says something reasonable once in a while, it has little or nothing to do with what the rest of us are here for.

If there was ever a single item about bias in a particular BBC report, or discussion of their editorial policy, I bet people here would object a whole lot less. Plenty of people have objected to the length and style of my own comments here, but at least I’m trying to stay on topic.

Hannon’s speech has been seen an astonishing 1,119,258, and increasing rapidly as I write, times on YouTube. It is the most popular video on Youtube globally.

As I mention elsewhere (see http://anon126.blogspot.com/2009/03/daniel-hannon-mep-star-is-born.html ) it is astounding how he has caught the public’s mood, and not just in the UK (which is just as well as the UK media has ignored this blistering and eloquent attack). It is rare for a politicians to actually say what the people are thinking.

it is amazing how much the Yanks have taken to him, and how brilliant his interviews with them have been. It is fun to see him refer to the Beeb’s bias on his Fox interview (see my blog for link).

we need more politico’s like him, which is a pity as we will not get them

I like Atlas. He is clearly ‘barking’, but that doesn’t mean he’s entirely wrong. Quite a few of the ‘loony’ predictions he made a year ago (banking collapse, government fucking up people’s life savings, etc), have come to pass. Thankfully, some of the others haven’t (Population of world to be reduced to 500,000,000 through mass starvation and war).

I think he should be free to keep posting. After all, what difference does it make to anybody. Just skip them if you find them too disturbing?

Indeed, I’m just sorry that Brillo Pad, who has normally got a bit more sense, fell for it. He was the one who ended up looking like a tit. I only hope that he gave his source a good kicking.

The BBC covered Hannan’s speech on “This Week” (a short part of it). For some reason they decided that the PM’s reaction shot needed to be repositioned; you can quite clearly see the edit. You can see it highlighted here:

I suppose it made the PM’s chortling look more appropriate.
