Nick Robinson didn't expect Bercow: he was hoping for Beckett, and basically endorsed her on his blog on Wednesday. He and his colleagues have been saying for days that the Tories hated Bercow, and it would have been wrong for Parliament to have a Speaker that both sides didn't support, so Beckett would be great. Never mind that she had the taxpayer pay for her gardening and light fixtures or whatever it was.
We know Robinson is so close to the politicians he covers that he can occasionally be seen sharing pants with them, but did he get it wrong, or has the last week of "nah, it won't be Bercow" been a smokescreen? It's not like the Whips weren't pushing this already.
