Half the Picture

We are often mocked by our critics for drawing attention to bias by omission, but when it amounts to downplaying the implications for Israel of Iran’s nuclear programme, it’s a significant omission, indicative of a significant bias.

Just Journalism points out that while this topic is covered fairly extensively by the serious press, the BBC gives scarcely a mention to background essential for understanding why Israel might feel particularly threatened. Hat tip Deegee.

is ‘just journalism’ really a valid source tho? strikes me as another one of these zionist love fests. don’t get me wrong, i’d happily support the israelis against the arabs OVER THERE, but over here I say sod both the jewish and the jiahdi lobby groups – both wield too much influence in the halls of power.

What a peculiar thing to say. What has the validity of Just Journalism got to do with pointing out an example of bias by omission?

You seem to be implying that they’re making a dodgy allegation. This site is all about the BBC taking sides rather than reporting fully and fairly. Unless the BBC expands on the relationship between Israel and Iran when reporting on Iran’s nuclear ambitions people won’t understand Israel’s concerns. Other newspapers have done so, and so should the BBC.

Lobby groups and campaigning groups are bound to do what they do.
It’s up to the BBC to provide balanced coverage. That includes context.

Are you saying that because you think Just Journalism is a ’ Zionist love fest’ it should be put into the same category as groups that promote radical Islam?

This Zionist/Jewish lobby thing is just a scaremongering tag for something that every advocacy group does all the time. We’re doing it now, with this website. Lobbying for balanced reporting.
