The story here is not that the BBC is cutting £34m from its web spending, axing 200 sites and “closing” 360 website posts. These may be minor, cosmetic steps in the right direction, but that’s all. No, the real isue here is that the corporation will continue to spend the obscene sum of £130m+ a year on its web operations for a cacaphony of services that are simply not needed. The BBC weather web service, for example, is simply a platform for inaccurate forecasts and propaganda for climate change politics. More seriously, the BBC’s websites have played a significant part in strangling both local journalism and major elements of web entrepreneurship in the UK. They are an integral part of the BBC’s imperialism (which it so despises in others!).

Does anyone actually visit the bbc’s websites? That’s a serious question, because apart from listening to (mainly) BBC7, iplayer and (sometimes) radio 4 online, I never use them.
Nope. Can’t see the point. Having bias thrust down my throat via the radio and television, I’m hardly likely to go looking for it…
Agree. I used to go to Richard Black’s blog but I can’t be bothered now. It doesn’t make me angry anymore; I just think “what a prat”.
Well the websites have one very good use ! you can screen capture the bias before the pillocks realise what they have said ! nice to see them condemned through their own words!!
I occasionally visit Michael Prick’s blog , if I am really bored, just to see how few comments he gets and take the p**s out of him, but, quite frankly , it is a rather one-sided and unchallenging sport.
Apart from that, I just check the website for programme schedules.
Amazing, all that money and the website design is rubbish. Sums up the BBC really.
I’ve never heard of most of the sites they are closing down – speaks volumes on how necessary they are!

I have, and do use the few opportunities to get a word in, despite the mods, rules, and closings, because they might get seen… and noted.
This seems caret blanche to get back to the good old days of pumping out propaganda free of feedback, at least on the bubble wall. or ‘allowing’ it only after a wee bit of tweaking in editorial.

I was an enviro-related site where we could only gasp at the casual way vast amounts (of money, personnel and PR) were thrown at some environmental issues that often ended up competing for eyeballs directly with what we were doing. Tx, Aunty.
Then we realised that, having p*ssed it all away on toys and pensions, they really hadn’t a clue, and no one bar a few BBCphilic loons were paying any attention and they were probably running numbers in the hundreds despite the vast resources in set-up and promo.
And then most simply withered and died. Probably nipping some kids’ genuine enthusiasm for things green in, excuse the pun, ‘the bud’. A bit like Justin ‘I am trying this for a show segment, but will drop this like most BBC hypocritical hot potatoes when the camera stops rolling’-Rowlatt managed with Newsnight’s Ethical’ for a bit’ Man.
One presumes the costs simply got swallowed and the munchkins reassigned.
How any brain-dead glee clubber can argue that the BBC ‘competes’ on an equal footing with private media is either delusional, on the payroll, or gunning for tomorrow’s Breakfast sofa slot to push Labour economic policy, oozed along by the fragrant, if fragile Sian (earning Lord knows what to be told what to say by some eternal never-left-student uni numptie in the producer’s chair).
‘working for’… to avoid sounding a bit Tronesque.
But aren’t they missing the blindingly obvious commercial alternative? Put all the BBC’s vacancies on their own website and save the cost of external advertising. It’s so obvious that I can’t believe no-one’s thought of it already. (Only joking!)
Ah, but that might not look good and lead to suggestions of not offering equal opportunity.
Unlike the current system, which does exactly the same but introduces that one degree of separation only Beeboids can convince themselves represents balance and impartiality.
But, Steve, if the BBC did that, the Guardian would go bust…….Er…
