A Biased BBC reader writes;
“Palestinian writer Raja Shehadeh (natch, you know what’s coming) uses this platform affordedo him by the BBC on Radio 4’s Book of the Week slot to promote war, the Caliphate and death to Israel.
It is written seductively in a quiet manner, poetic and lyrical…but listen to the words and there is no mistaking the intent…to incite the Arab world to attack Israel and to do away with borders and nationalities…in other words create a Muslim caliphate. He tells us that Israel and the Arab dictators like Mubarak were in a ‘deadly embrace’ that allowed Israel to stay in existence and flourish for 30 years. What was the alternative? The Muslims had tried destroying Israel 3 times….The only conclusion is that he wishes that Israel had not been able to sign peace treaties with the likes of Egypt and that wars had continued with the aim of annihilating Israel and the Jews.
Good of the BBC to allow the vioce of terrorism onto the airwaves whilst banishing that of people like Geert Wilders who is condemned for suggesting that a religion that has homophobia, misogyny, religious apartheid and evangelism at the point of a sword, may not be a fit and proper partner in creating a free and liberal world.
Thanks for this 🙁 – I’m listening to it right now.

Perhaps Dave Cameron will recognise the Caliphate as including Turkey and thence bring them all into the EU? Imam Dave, now there’s a thought!

A great piece of weaselspeak @ 07:35, saying how he wants peace for everyone in the region including Israel. One could picture his crocodile smile a la Arafat. As you pointed out, everything he said belied that. He complained that the peace Egypt made with Israel allowed Israel to ‘focus their resources in oppressing the West Bank’. Any time in the last 30 years the West Bank Arabs wanted peace like Egypt they’d’ve had it.
I’ve no objection to this guy being given his platform under the circumstances to issue a crypto-call for genocide against Israel. One would imagine given that ‘one man one vote’ has meant literally that in Gaza and the West Bank – they vote once and that’s it, there are no more elections – if he saw what has happened in Egypt as a democratic revolution he’d be calling for the same in the West Bank.
You make an excellent point DV about Geert Wilders. There are all sorts of circumstances where he might be given a similar platform. He isn’t. That’s because the genocidal sentiments of this Arab bigot are in tune with the BBC’s own.

As soon as the BBC made the heart-sinking announcement of a week of ‘Letters to the Arab World’ it was obvious what was coming. The first episode. An Egyptian lady eulogising about the uprising; the wonderful freedom-loving young people, the wise all-knowing elderly such as her own dear departed mother. All the time you knew that underlying these flowery weasel words was the rabid hatred of Jews which underpinned their desire to depose Mubarak, tear up the peace agreement and get on with the job of eliminating Israel.
The BBC’s anti Israel output seems to be gathering momentum.

Can anyone explain why allusions that would be condemned as racist and warmongering, labelled far-right, if expressed by an Israeli become just normal if a Palestinian says it?
Could you imagine the BBC tolerating a letter from a ‘Kach-supporting settler’ referring to Arab villages mushrooming all around, causing destruction to our beautiful landscape ~1:35? Would he be allowed to reimagine his region with a continuity that required the destruction of independent states of the Great Rift Valley, which include Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, so the region could return to political and social wholeness that the region once enjoyed before the Arabs invaded ~2.00? Let alone making poetic allusions to filth left in the streets and stray cats.
Would the BBC give a platform to an Israeli bemoaning the Egypt-Israel peace treaty because it stopped Israel ending the problem once and for all by finishing the job and winning the war?
Am I surprised? I’m not as it was the writing of Raja Shehadeh, probably a decade ago, that convinced me that peace was not at hand.

Contrast & Compare, after failing to report on the celebrations in Gaza of the pogrom in Itamar the BBC continues its propaganda for Hamas.
From the BBC:
Palestinians protest for Hamas-Fatah unity
Palestinian sources:
Hamas attacks “unity” rally in Gaza
Note the correct use of “scare quotes” above.
Reported by Palestinian media but not by the BBC:
Speaking by phone from the protest one man, who asked not to be identified, said about 200 Hamas members carrying flags and chanting Hamas slogans entered the square shortly before 11:30 a.m.
He said two demonstrators were hit with Taser guns and fainted as they shouted demanding the removal of all politically-affiliated paraphernalia from the area.
In Ramallah, 3,000 gathered the Manara Circle, with early reports of Palestinian Authority security presence and some Fatah flags being raised. Palestine Press Agency adds:
30 people were admitted to hospitals on Tuesday in Gaza City as a result of Hamas elements assaulting the demonstration to ‘end the division’.
Mohammed Ghareeb, a participant in the demonstration, said “A group of young people that were chanting ‘People want to end the division’ was attacked by a large group of Hamas members who were chanting ‘Hamas is the Solution’ and [the Hamas members] beat them with batons and sharp tools and opened fire during the withdrawal from the site after the rush the masses of young people on them.”

Here’s a “letter to the Arab world” that the BBC should run to achieve balance:
Letter to a Palestinian Neighbor

That was a very thoughtful piece. However it does not hold out too much hope of peace in the foreseeable future, so sad!

Neither does the “Palestinian writer’s” letter. As David Vance says, “It is written seductively in a quiet manner, poetic and lyrical…but listen to the words and there is no mistaking the intent…”
The intent is clearly the disappearance of the state of Israel. His silky toned pronunciation of the names of places that have always been inhabited and revered by Jews, and written about in Jewish scriptures for centuries before Islam and even Christianity, Jericho for example, is all a denial of the Jewishness of this land he claims is “Palestinian” and part of the Caliphate.

It is interesting to note that Shehadeh is Christian With all his praise of toleration between secular Egyptian and Muslim Brotherhood and the crowd protecting Muslim’s at their prayers you might have thought differently. That toleration apparently doesn’t extend to European women or local Egyptians or Christians but I guess he was too busy taking in the scenery to notice.

Yes.
Under the guise of ‘internationalism’, we have Ms WILLIAMS, Controller of Radio 4, pushing her political/cultural agenda for the ‘Arab-Muslim’ world (excluding Israel). This translates largely as a broadcasting exercise in Arab-Muslim propaganda, paid for by British licencepayers.
It is the sort of thing which the Islamic broadcaster, Al Jazeera can consider doing; it is not what a publicly financed British broadcaster should be about.

Fair point, DV. Interesting to see the BBC’s flexibility when defining hate speech and incitement to violence.

Baby Saved in Itamar
“Just as IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz arrived in Neve Tzuf to offer his condolences, a Palestinian cab raced towards the community’s entrance. In it, soldiers and paramedics discovered a Palestinian woman in her 20s in advanced stages of labor and facing a life-threatening situation: The umbilical cord was wrapped around the young baby girl’s neck, endangering both her and her mother.
The quick action of settler paramedics and IDF troops deployed in the area saved the mother’s and baby’s life , prompting great excitement and emotions at the site where residents are still mourning the brutal death of five local family members.”
That’s right — as the surviving members of the Fogel family were sitting shiva for family members brutally murdered in last week’s terrorist attack — settlers and soldiers saved the life of both the Palestinian mother and her baby. It’s an amazing story that deserves to be told and shared by as many people as possible.
Yet the same media who can be counted on to report every act — no matter how rare — of alleged settler vandalism against Palestinian targets, seem to be taking a pass on this story. Just as the media have a hard time picturing settlers as victims (as evidenced by the botched reporting on the terrorist attack,) they also have a hard time reporting on anything that reflects positively on the settler community.
Send this story around and force the media to cover the case of settlers and soldiers who saved a Palestinian baby while paying a condolence call on those murdered by Palestinian terrorists.

More on that story here:
http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/2011/03/evil-extremist-itamar-settlers-save.html
Corporal Haim Levin, 19, an IDF paramedic, was the first medical team member at the scene and recounted the dramatic situation he faced.
“When I arrived, I saw a woman covered by a blanket in a yellow Palestinian van. I moved closer and saw the baby’s head and upper body,” he told Ynet. “The umbilical cord was around the baby’s neck; the baby was grey and didn’t move.”
“I first removed the cord from the neck and at the same time asked paramedics to prepare the baby resuscitation kit. I pinched her to see if she’s responding, and she started to cry,” he said. Paramedics also treated the mother, who was in good condition at that point, Levin said.
Meanwhile, ambulance driver Orly Shlomo raced to the scene. “We joined the military paramedic and helped him cut off the umbilical cord…without the medical treatment, the fetus and woman faced genuine life danger,” she told Ynet.
“It was touching, but I couldn’t help but think that a few meters from there, people were sitting Shiva for another baby, who was murdered,” she said. “I was touched to see the face of the new baby, but I also thought about the face of the murdered baby.”
Gadi Amitun, who heads the Magen David Adom team at Neve Tzuf, said this was not the first time settlers assist Palestinians in distress.
“They know we have a skilled medical team here, and in any case of accident or injury they arrive and we help them,” he said.
The paramedic noted that on the day of the Fogel massacre, settlers saw fireworks and celebrations in nearby Palestinian communities, but added that the local medical team is committed to assisting anyone in need.
Palestinians from the nearby village of Nabi Salah gathered around the paramedics along with the new grandmother and could not hide their joy.
“They thanked us and told us they named the girl Jude,” Corporal Levin said.

I think we had a right to expect to hear from at least one of these Arab voices in this BBC series. At least we would if the BBC was not anti-democratic, anti-Semitic.

And separately to this (he criticised BBC reporting), on two occasions the presenter (Rebecca somebody) tells him he can’t quote the Koran, the second time he asks “What happened to free speech?”.
