SHAW DROPPING

Thanks to B-BBC contributor Graeme Thompson aka Hippiepooter for this item;

My jaw dropped listening to Danny Shaw on 5Live Breakfast this morning. He was reporting on a Guardian story concerning the IPPC investigation into the police shooting of the gangster Mark Duggan.

On the basis of partial evidence leaked from the IPPC investigation, The Guardian drew the firm and incendiary conclusion that Mark Duggan was unarmed when Police opened fire on him.

Basically, in my view, Danny Shaw mullahed the Guardian for this. He took the Police line against them.

I believe Danny Shaw’s name has cropped up a few times here in relation to accusations of bias, and justifiably so if I’m not getting confused with another ‘Shaw’ (apologies if I am), but when a BBC journalist puts himself ‘out there’ in the interests of responsible reporting, particularly when it’s the Guardian that’s ‘getting it’, he does the British public a tremendous service and there’s no better place than this to give him the applause he deserves.

I mentioned this on an OT post, but yesterday’s (Saturday) Today had a similar item with the delightful Ms Montague conducting an incest interview with Shaw on this ‘revelation’.  Shaw made the same point then, but you can tell that Sarah the air-headed bint is buying it wholesale; that the caveat comes at the end of the piece is, I think, certainly not ‘balanced’ – especially as Montague has spent the previous 3 minutes slavering over The Guardian’s (illicitly and probably illegally obtained – funny how only some media outlets are allowed to that) story about an ongoing investigation.

“incest interview” sums it up nicely.

Sarah Montague said “Indeed” when Shaw put the information the Guardian had irresponsibly handled into its proper perspective.

I didn’t see it as an ‘incest interview’.  Those I see as when one BBC person interviews another to find what he thinks and he feels about something as if the BBC is the story not the event rather than reporting what’s happened and whose said what about it and leaving us to make up our own minds.

Shaw made the same points more or less as he did on 5Live, but I felt a tad more assertively on 5Live.

Simply excellent reporting in the public interest on a story that if left unchecked and unbalanced would have played into the hands of criminals and extremists.

Montague´s statement as fact that the riots were because of the Met’s treatment of the Duggan family were utterly disgraceful.

DANNY SHAW: “The Guardian is saying that this shows that Mark Duggan was not armed when he was shot. I don’t think you can draw that conclusion from this at all. There are a number of scenarios where the gun may have been found some feet away from his body and the crucial thing is what police honestly believed at the time they opened fire. If they honestly believed that they were under threat or the lives of other people were under threat, they felt it was necessary and proportionate to open fire, then that is lawful. That’s the important thing. I mean, these are interesting details but they don’t actually really necessarily take us that much further.”

hippiepooter, surely Danny Shaw threw cold water on the Guardian report before reading out a police statement critical of the Guardian, as well as an IPCC statement asking people not to rush to judgement?

Apologies hippiepooter, I did misread your post completely.

    Listened to the whole thing.

Noting the show hostess has intro’d the entire thing with the Graun’s massive punt as a headline up front, which only later is qualified by so many counter facts it seems incredible that any credible medium could think of making such a claim at this juncture.

There is also the not small matter of how this information, in its raw, sampled form, was obtained.

I’ll go with the kudos to Mr. Shaw for being one of few Beeboids who can see a honking great professional abuse when they see it, but overall the ‘team’ approach smoothed the thing out to much.

The gRaun should be held to account for what is little more than further incitement, based it seems on littel more than an over-cosy indulgence in fuzz-bashing that plays well with their core groupies, but even those with half a brain can see is desperate stuff.
