    I remember the time when if a US president got a cultural reference wrong, like Obama just has, it would be plastered over the BBC as evidence of how stupid he was. That of course was when the president was a Republican,

    FFS, Mardell even tries to offer a defense for the President’s geek faux pas. Is he actually worried about getting criticism from readers that he’s biased against the President by blogging about it and he thinks this makes him appear even-handed? Or can he literally just not help himself, and the defense is reflexive? Notice this giveaway about His campaign attacks against Republicans:

    He is determined to keep painting them as intransigent, uncaring and out of touch.

    Just the way Mardell and the BBC reports them.

    While taking on board what everyone has said above, to be fair to Mardell, he does admit in his piece: “the president’s performance was not about winning an agreement but playing the blame game.” It looks like Obama is now going to slam the Republicans for months with his continuing “it’s not me, guv” campaign.

    The sad part is there is no loud Republican voice making their case in ordinary everyday speak. And the media, now no longer the Leader’s beloved mistress but rather his abused spouse, still they crave his attention. I just can’t understand what they are about. How interesting when given a choice between Obama and Woodward, they chose to side with Obama.

    As usual it’s Mark Steyn who nails the phony argument being put forward by Obama, crying crocodile tears about having to cut $44 billion from the federal budget. In National Review Online, Mark points out “$44 BILLION IS ABOUT WHAT THE UNITED STATES BORROWS EVERY NINE DAYS.”

      Like I said in another thread, Mardell’s footnote defense for the President might have been a proactive response to those who criticize him for criticizing the President. It’s even more insane a charge than those who think the BBC is a Zionist lapdog.

    david cameron said tonight, there will be no lurch to the right because of recent advances by ukip in recent by elections,hold on,the conservative party are supposed to be a right wing party opposed to left wing socalist ideals of the left wing labour party,are you like me and have always thought that david cameron is a fake tory and is in fact some type of obama politacaly correct fiscal socalist.

      All those Conservative MP’s who are enjoying the luxury lifestyle their job brings, will now be looking down the wrong end of a P45 in 2015 after the General Election. Does Dopey Dave really think they will let him hold his centre-left position as they march over the cliff singing the red flag? I don’t see him holding the present line. Time will tell.

      There are always some who think that a lurch to the extremes will help a parties midterm blues. It doesn’t. It does always prove to be a massive own goal as it allows your opponents to portray you as out of touch extremists.

        Being ineffectual is just as likely to prove a vote loser. I notice Hague is starting to make some noises about a possible Roumanian and Bulgarian influx and getting rid of the attracting factors in the benefits system. Let’s hope it has tangible results.

          The previous government was totally ineffectual on many things yet kept being elected. Of course their failures though legion didn’t receive as much coverage as the Coalitions. I wonder why?

      You must be new here and have never read any previous reports from Mark Mardell. Otherwise, you’d have seen the evidence that he reports exactly according to what he describes as what the President’s goals dictate.

      You left out the part where Mardell provided the defense for the President’s stupid mistake. And you confuse describing a negative tactic with disapproval of it. Did you notice that Mardell ironically screws up when defending the President for screwing up a Spock reference? The Start Trek character is Mr., not Dr. The latter was a famous US pediatrician and child-rearing authority.

      The Spock comparison is something the Presidents supporters used to push to show how brilliant He is, and as a counter to the negative charges of aloofness. Your citation of Mardell’s mention of it disproves nothing.

      Mardell even betrays his bias in favor of the President’s policies and against conservative writers when he defines them as proving the President correct about Republicans being uncaring and out of touch. This is an editorial comment, an opinion writer criticizing other journalists for their opinion. Hardly impartial. Furthermore, it’s dishonest, because in fact spending is going to rise this year anyway, to the tune of $110 billion. Have you seen Mardell or any other BBC “journalist” explain this? Last I checked, Mardell was calling it “grim” and “cruel dismemberment”. That’s his personal opinion on economics and government. If you don’t believe me, watch him tell the BBC College of Journalism (starting @ 5:50 in).

      “Cuts” is another way of saying that spending is going to rise a bit less, that’s all. Yet Mardell seems to be unaware of this and portrays people who say it as being out of touch.

        Which explains why he rationally demolished Vance’s innuendo. Anyone who understand objectivity will always be savaged.

        What this site never understands is the irony in condemning the BBC for being biased because it doesn’t reflect an extreme far right viewpoint which has no traction in the UK.

        Of course if you believe the BBC has a green socialist agenda to flood the country in Roma and turn it into the Western Caliphate of a new Ottoman Empire then you’ll be at home.

          No, colditz, it was written without any apparent knowledge of Mardell’s output over the long term. We’ve been told a number of times by BBC employees that we must consider a single report in the context of the long-term coverage. Nearly everything in Mardell’s post must be viewed – as per BBC instructions – in that context. To take them out of that context and claim we’re inferring something that isn’t there is unfair.
