Weekend Thread 14 March 2020

How will the BBC continue to report the ongoing pandemic ? Play the blame game ? Concentrate of failures ? Tell us with glee how other countries are better than us ? Take your pick …meanwhile the consultation on the funding of the BBC has about 2 weeks to go – here is the link to the Government site .

https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/consultation-on-decriminalising-tv-licence-evasion

And these are the questions in the suggested ‘structured ‘ reply
( which you will find if you go through the consultation );

Why do you consider that the TV licence evasion should no longer be criminal offence?

If you have a view, what alternative enforcement scheme models do you consider to be most appropriate? Why?

What steps could the Government take to mitigate any impacts that may result from decriminalisation of TV licence evasion?

Lots of people just want the BBC gone – but this is , perhaps , a first step …

Sorry for another post – but wife called me down…and BBC Newswatch on..they start with viewers calling them out on their language and stories that are adding to the hysteria….on coronavirus
and then for some inexplicable reason they switch to their Young Reporter story on upskirting – have the young girl in to push her agenda and completely ignore the criticisms raised by the viewers

So basically they said – viewers think this and we don’t give toss…lets promote something to the Yoof…

Yes, I heard that item, Stew, and I was amazed just like you. It’s not a difficult job. One supermarket near me was flogging fruit trees for, I think, a penny short of £13 recently. No doubt there were some instructions inside the packet. Lots of home gardeners will have been planting those trees with varying levels of success.

No mention by BBC N&CA about training people on the job. Teaching others how to do something. Learning a new skill.

No. Just a complete snowflake response of panic “We haven’t got people to do it. Our borders are closing. Where will we get people from?* Panic! Aaaaaargggghhhhh!!”

Pathetic. It was another reason for my switching off the radio. Please see below. Anyway, I need a cup of tea to fuel my next ‘A Hitchhikers Guide to the Pandemic – Rule #2’. I’m off to Phytoo Seven in the Supermarket Nebula to see if there is a space in a kitchen where there is no panic.

    A Hitchhikers Guide to the Pandemic – Rule #1 – Don’t panic!

The BBC on R4’s TOADY are in full panic mode this morning. You can hear it in their voices. I think an important fact has dawned on them in their subconscious minds but they wish to deny it.

The fact is this: the Government and Chris Witty and Sir Patrick Vallance are having ‘a good war’, the BBC are having ‘a bad war’.

Because of various inbuilt, ingrained, attitudes at the BBC they realise they have already blown it and the bulk of the population who consider and think about such things (definitely a minority of the UK as a whole but probably a growing one) are realising the BBC are well-past their sell-by and use-by dates.

The N&CA part of the Beeb has taken an anti-(Conservative Party) Government position and it has led the BBC up a narrow alley which has a dead end ahead. The surroundings are high buildings. The BBC is now stuck down that alley, with nowhere to go.

The 8.10 a.m. interview slot on TOADY is the high point of the programme. This morning it descended to about seventeen notches below banal.

I just had to switch off.

I never switch on, and feel refreshed for not having done so. Same with all television and radio news. Not interested, don’t watch or listen to the hours of biased, opinionated drivel they push out. I LOOK for the news on line, in places where the MSM wouldn’t dream of going. Consequently I am far better informed.

Am thinking if the BBC Radio N&CA carries on as it did this a.m., the Snuffy household will also have to hunt out some digi alternatives to the BBC.

        It was truly dire.

Neither of us are fluent. We watch very little French television – it’s even more dire than your own. The news is just as heavily biased and opinionated, so we avoid that, too (well, I do, Mme Goat isn’t so picky…).

I tend to follow Fox and Breitbart, and a number of pundits on Youtube (like The Duran, Steve Turley, Lionel Nation and ‘Spoonclank’), but there are good news sources out there to be found. The MSM is a complete waste of time, and expletives.

I could not believe what I was hearing on the BBC news this morning that, Britain is expecting to plant millions of trees but can’t at present find enough skilled persons to do the work-I have planted a few in my time and really it does not take any special skill-whatever is needed to make the plant can be shown in a few minutes-so I might ask as no doubt you would also, can’t they, the authorities engage all those persons in good health currently unemployed, all Prisoners, and Students in their holiday periods, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides; goodness it really beats cock fighting to hear these drips, no wonder this nation is falling apart.

    • Up2snuff says:

      I share your despair, tarien.

I’ve seen this tree planting thing done in various places. The holes are dug in rows by a machine. Another machine, can be a forklift or a mechanical digger comes along carrying a pile of saplings, covered in two plastic protection tubes. The human effort and skill is in remembering which tube to pull off: the top one or bottom one and then plonking the correct end in the ground and tamping the earth over the roots with a well aimed foot in a welly.

The next most technical bit is putting a note in the Local Authority diary for about five to ten years ahead. Said note needs to remind some Herbert to watch out for:
      1. Weather. ie. In periods of drought when saplings may need some additional water
      2. Rabbits and other potential consumers of tasty saplings. ie These pests may try and remove the plastic protection tubes in order to reach the feast awaiting underneath.
      3. Anno Domini. ie. Sooner or later the plantation will need to be thinned out and re-spaced. This latter point, sadly, is often forgotten and I’ve seen a whole bunch of trees in one location discarded purely because they had been ‘forgotten’. Either that, or they have grown out and killed adjacent trees over the fight for water. You can see this along motorways and new roads where lack of ongoing maintenance has led to a high rate of attrition.

There is a plantation near where I live now and it is one I pass quite regularly. Just t’other day I was pleased to see Herbert had sent out a-man-in-a-hi-viz to tackle point 2. above and probably report back to Herbert on point 3, as well. Dealing with point 1. has, sadly, been quite unnecessary for several months. In fact, some saplings have been heard moaning quietly, during the recent wind and rain, that no-one has brought them umbrellas.

      I await developments.

Whether I remember or survive long enough to report on them is another matter.

The supermarket was packed with people and there was a fair amount of chat and banter between shoppers at the checkouts and the staff. I reckon the supermarkets will be having ‘a good war.’ Tesco haven’t felt the need to send out the usual discount vouchers this month.

In about three to four months, I can foresee Food Banks around the country groaning under the weight of tinned food and loads of rice & pasta donations.

COVID-19 Highlights Staff Shortages at German Hospitals
Germany has plenty of hospital beds in its intensive care units. What it doesn’t have is enough personnel. As the number of people with COVID-19 increases, the stakes of this shortfall could get a lot higher.

Comments have closed on that BBC article
and the faithful got there first.

      They’ve seen this line
“A comprehensive review of satellite data acquired at both poles is unequivocal in its assessment of accelerating trends, say scientists.”
      and just believed it.

Whereas Tony Heller’s video totally contradicts that narrative

Actually it’s like most skeptics didn’t see it
      cos they have voted much
The skeptic comments all got pushed into lowest voted
      .. voted down by 100 to 50
like someone made an anti-Greta comment and ot got 44 likes vs 99 dislikes.

Something I came across on the interweb, something you will again be highly unlikely to see / hear on the bbc with their black obsession RE Stormzy, and various grime rapists etc

Is the Beatles music too overrated? Just listening the music itself, it’s of a much lower quality than everyone told me it would be. I don’t have the patience to complete some of their shorter songs, despite being a fan of Pink Floyd music.

    Answer 1:

It is said that when Chuck Berry died in 2017, it was from a broken heart ????. At age 90 years old, Chuck Berry lived to see his beloved Love Childe, Rock & Roll, die in his arms after a long, slow decline…

Rock officially died New Years Day 2000 (Y2K). Yes, on occasion, you may hear authentic ‘Rock & Roll’ at a bar or a Library ???? or perhaps a coffee shoppe or Assisted Living Facility ????, However, Rock is as good as dead ???? because it has been rendered CULTURALLY IRRELEVANT with the passage of time.

What passes as popular music in 2020 is your choice of PAP, RAP & CRAP (Fusion HAT Clone Country) else R&B which is why I go weeks without playing my two channel Audiophile stereo system because of lack of old or new content.

Of all the acts in Rock’s pantheon of GODS , NOTHING approximates the impact of a certain 3D rate Midlands Bar Band [Note: I was making a pun on Middling—as LiverPuds, The Beatles were a Northern Outfit] that went to Germany and reinvented itself as ‘The Beatles’.

The Beatles started off as a Proto-Punk Band who recycled American Brill Building Music (Sedaka & King) & Girl Group acts (Ronnettes, Marvelettes) and simply uptempoed them in a new genre called MersyBeat/British Invasion or 2D GEN Rock (22NOV1963–09AUG1974) also known as the Turbulent 60s.

Play the Isley Brothers “Twist & Shout” against The Beatles’ version of the same song and it is if the SEX PISTOLS were covering it—meaning, the Beatles were a minimum 14 years Future Forward and that’s just MersyBeat!!!

Instantly, 2D GEN Rock (to which your Pink Fred is one such act) rendered Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Lil Richard & even The Beach Boys (A 1st GEN Act that jumped into 2D GEN via Pet Sounds LP) obsolete.

And that was just for starters. The Beatles did more than deconstruct American Rock & Roll—THEY HAD THE AUDACITY TO WRITE THEIR OWN SONGS —-something which was virtually UNHEARD of by British Bands in 1963.

Even more incredible is the fact that this unknown, upstart Northern Band with no previous song credits was now writing ✍️ HIT MAKING SONGS FOR O-T-H-E-R-S!!!

I’m not even warmed up yet. Having conquered the global Musical genre called MERSYBEAT, the Beatles then hit another ball out of the park when they tried their hand at their film making debut with ‘Hard Day’s Night’. ‘Hard Day’s Night’ was more than a just an unexpected, Film Noir hit, It is that critical juncture of time when the Beatles transcended made into “Cultural Influencers” of the Decade.

It wasn’t music until it was Beatle Musique, One didn’t purchase half boots with Spanish Heels—-you bought Beatle Boots!!! Their fancy became the New standard of excellence.

E.G., Ever hear???? of an obscure Black Lead Guitarist for Lil’ Richard’s oldies show called Jimi Hendrix? A musician whose guitar playing was so utterly Jumping that it was ‘JUMP QUALIFIED’⛱ (pun alert)? Who gave him his audience? Sir James Paul McCartney, that’s who. Said Beatles gave Jimi his critical mass by recommending him for the Monterey Pop Festival as what? A Talent Scout?!!!

Then 1965 hit and it was all over. The MersyBeat scene had run its course and the Beatles should have dethroned Elvis as Las Vegas’ Premiere Oldies Show act…but that didn’t happen.

Instead, the Beatles reinvented themselves as the World ???? eminent ART HOUSE band (Revolver), then reinvented themselves as the World eminent Psychedelic Band (SGT Pepper-MMT) and finally reinvented themselves as Dozens of Modern AOR Rock (White LP-Abbey Road). NO OTHER Rock Act has achieved as much in so short of a time as The Beatles—one band, four gendres…under 7 years?!!! No one does that or will do that ever again.

I love Pink Floyd (2D GEN Psychedelic ) with Meddle (1971) & Dark Side of the Moon ???? (1973) being their best LPs ( I exclude the trash called The Wall (1979) as being horribly dated & pointlessly stupid). Pink Fred did not invent Psychedelic; They simply gigged in it and were rendered dinosaurs by my era, Post Punk (1978–1994) or from Joy Division-My Bloody Valentine

Although music ???? is timeless when listened to, it should never be criticized “Out of the Context” of its creation

Who is this pillock Prof John Ashton ? who seems to be making an arse of himself whenever he’s interviewed. He was talking to Mat Frei (I know) on Ch4 news, and he all but wanted Boris taken out and shot, to be replaced by none less than goofy Rory Stewart !!!!l Mat Frei attempted to shut him up as he was promoting Stewart to the post of PM. It was an insane interview bordering on a car crash. Amazing though how unknowns can suddenly within hours become well knowns when their views are asked for.
