Why don’t media mention Over 30 years with Keith Vaz was Leicester MP ?
Andrew Bridgen is the Conservative MP for North West Leicestershire (that doesn’t touch the city)
and he has been working extensively to expose the appalling conditions revealed last week that there are thousands of people in Leicester working in modern slavery conditions.
Mr Bridgen told Iain that “there are probably 10,000 modern slaves in Leicester” in about 250 of these “sweatshops” and he said that they have gone under the radar for such a long time because “the city council don’t inspect them.”

Haven’t seen this mentioned on the BBC website. Yesterday I checked all the BBC regional news webpages and there was nothing. Today I checked the BBC main news pages but saw nothing.

I heard some daft bint being interviewed on the radio this afternoon. When she was asked about wearing the face nappy she giggled and said she didn’t mind. “It’s just another item of clothing” she said, “just like putting on your trousers.” No it’s not. It’s entirely different. We’ve been wearing normal clothes since we left the Garden of Eden, only ne’er do wells ever wore masks.
This face muzzle is odd and dehumanising and strangely creepy. The fact that it will also soon be compulsory is incredibly depressing.
When your government can even tell you what to wear you’re no longer living in a free country. But they’ve been building up to this for months. Stay indoors. Stand this side of the line. Walk this way. Don’t go there…This is just more control.
You know, a few months ago if I’d donned a mask and walked into my local bank I’d have been arrested.
Now I’ll get arrested if I’m not wearing one…

In the ‘olden days’ we put infectious people into isolation wards/hospitals. The old ones didn’t even have linking corridors.
Potentially sick people were quarantined. The legislation that the government started with was based on this but they turned it back-to-front, they locked up the healthy.
Similarly with simple masks, originally used to stop (mild) infections from operating theatre staff being passed to open wounds, not to stop healthy people passing (what?) to other healthy people. Have the supermarkets had mass virus outbreaks within their staffs? They have been open all the time and their staff huddle together all the time.
Basically the control freaks have run out of ideas.

I work in a supermarket and have been mask-less for five days a week since the scandemic began – and so have 95% of my colleagues, so this further bout of fear-mongering really takes the biscuit. But if the issue is of such vital importance, why wait eleven more days? With each passing day, Boris becomes even more of a clueless lump, making policy through media demands.
The government we have now seem to be working on the shutting the stable after the horse has bolted principle. Lockdown when it was too late and people were entering the country at will. Now masks as they confuse cases with fatalities. Like trying to feed the dead parrot from Monty Python after it falls off the perch.
I’ve called Boris a lot of names over the last few months, but ‘clueless lump’ is my new favourite.

On the 26th. June I sent my MP an email asking this question.
Could you please confirm that the government is not going to make vaccinations mandatory. And that no one who declines to be vaccinated will be disadvantaged, punished or otherwise segregated for not doing so; that there will be no travel restrictions, refusals of medical, or dental treatment, access to public transport or government funded services? Or that the wearing of a mask will not be made compulsory?
I’m still awaiting a reply.
I noted the signs on a bus in Bristol saying that you can now be fined £100 for not wearing a face covering on a bus . There was also a sign saying the driver will not be challenging anybody so not to bother him if you see somebody whose face is uncovered. Then there was yet another sign saying some people have health conditions which mean they should not wear a mask. So whose job is it to enforce all this and to decide who should be fined?

AISI, I think it will disappear fairly quickly when some scientists start pointing out that face covering by law is pointless unless you add compulsory gloves to the face mask rules.
Stew Green has already explained on here how a mask does need to be used properly.
That really requires a hand (with a protective glove removed) to make any adjustments to the mask or to touch the face and neck near the mask – and then for the glove to be replaced before touching anything that may be touched by another person within a shop.
If Covid-19 cases still increase, mask wearing will be deemed to have no effect and there will be pressure to have it scrapped.
If Covid-19 cases continue their gradual fall, compulsory face covering again will be shown to have no effect and there will be pressure for the rule to be scrapped.
Compulsory face covering will only be continued, I would have thought, if there is a dramatic sudden fall in infections after it is made mandatory. Watch this space.

I work with the NHS and can tell you they are not all superstars…in fact the section I work with hasn’t even got a date to get back to patient care – when it could start tomorrow..it is the NHS arrogance that stops it and all this clapping does is make it worse. They get paid to do a job….and as you say the mistakes that are made are covered up – and people paid off.

On face masks I think the gov can be given a small benefit of the doubt. Or more precisely, being in a cleft stick.
It is a fine balance. The act of wearing a mask and the handling of it afterwards is a big transmission risk if it has some virus on it. How many wearers wash or discard straight after use, having also washed their hands before and after? Exactly. Almost no-one. It also creates a false sense of security. Do you remember when front seat belts were made compulsory? Rear seat injuries went up! I rest my case.
Not wearing a mask prevents virus build up. But wearing would save you if a carrier coughed all over you. Which some pig ignorant people will.
But no doubt at all that asymptomatic transmission is reduced by wearing.
So in the ideal scenario, everyone would be wearing a mask except you/ me !!!!
But of course there is a perception that wearing a mask MUST be beneficial and so I suspect the science is being ditched in favour of the popular perception of people…….some of the same masses who flood Bournemouth beach on a sunny day.

Sluff, compulsory seat belt wearing also kills up to 20* people a year in the UK where drivers or front seat passengers are trapped or thrown against ‘A’ or ‘B’ pillars or windows or internally injured by the belts themselves.
The thing about masks is (I listed the downsides at the weekend) that unless you make glove use also compulsory in shops, the face mask legislation is pretty much of none effect. One of the downsides I listed was that they produce a false sense of security in everyone which may lead to carelessness.
The thought struck me this morning that the last time I really noticed someone coughing in a supermarket was way back on the Saturday before the PM announced the lockdown on Monday 23 March 2020. Can’t say that that has happened – at all – since then.

AISI, think we have evidence from either HK, SK or Singapore, where someone sat in a seat for an evening church service that had been occupied by someone in the morning service who had just returned from a visit to China. That was a person>surface>person transmission.
In China, HK, SK, Japan and Singapore the wearing of face masks was routine pre-Covid-19 when outdoors in cities because of pollution. Tourists from those countries even wear face masks in London because of perceived traffic fumes. So do some cycle messengers.
None of that routine outdoor face-mask-wearing stopped transmission of Covid-19 in those countries from October/November 2019-on, did it?

He has underestimated the increased economic and social damage and over-estimated any small praise he will get. Iirc, they second couple had been certain that they had no other possible source of infection. Also, how do you know that they were not wearing masks?

There’s quite a bit on droplet transmission distances and quite a bit on asymptomatic transmission. Though Aslt above is not wrong. 2m is a risk-compromise distance. There’s no cliff-edge distance. But a general 2m message is a whole lot easier to understand than e.g. ‘1.97m on a Tuesday if you are in a queue at the bookmakers with only a small window open’.

There’s also my own data point. A guest in our garden was speaking and the low sun was at just the right angle to show his shower of spittle falling to the ground in an arc. Readers may be happy to be unmasked and well within 2m of such a person but it’s not for me.
The irony was …he had already had the virus.
So I’m certainly cautious and being face to face with someone at a 1 m distance. Especially if they have the virus but don’t know they have because they have no symptoms.

I can confirm this. On many occasions before lockdown when driving (and yep, you’re right about the angle of the sun), and I’ve been chatting away to a passenger, I’ve noticed my own ‘spray’ emanating from my mouth – which is not normally visible to the naked eye. When I first saw this happen, I did think wow! that’s not good, but its something out of our control because we’re not aware of it happening.
Multiply this occurrence by trillions and its perfectly feasible how bacteria is spread around. Coughing and sneezing is a visual thing, so knowing its happening we move aside, but unseen mouth spray is a different matter – particularly within the confines of a car !
There’s not too many votes for the ‘Masks’ discussion topic above.
But whether we all agree or disagree with each other, in whole or in part, I can’t help thinking that the level of above debate is a whole lot more informative than that which is produced by several hundred so-called journalists and their editors at our fine impartial statist broadcaster.

Nick Robinson introduced the Toady Prog this morning and read out the date 14 January 2020. He realised what he had said and corrected himself immediately. I wonder if the text for the prog had been produced by an intern who had to rely on predictive text and spell check because that is 1. needed to cover their poor education, or, 2. that is all they have been used to in the digital era.

So, here goes.
I know what I know. I don’t know what I don’t know. I used to rely on various sources for the latter. Now I am at best dubious. Almost no one, including supposedly rigorous scientists, appears to either have a clue or the ability to resist ideological influences.
So I currently rely on experience and common sense.
My wife and I are ‘at risk’. Our kids are now back from Uni. They went through internal quarantine. We cooked and fed them and they wore masks and had their own bed and shower room and dined there too.
We as a family walk the dogs and socially distance.
A nice man just delivered some DIY stuff… might as well be productive as no freelance money. He was not wearing any PPE. We were. Masks, goggles and gloves. Latter disposed of after removing and binning packaging. Items to be left for a few days.
We have needed to to go out to town. Rarely. Feel for the retailers. Full PPE. Not great… no biggie. No problem walking on the side of street designated. No problem wearing masks in shops for a wee while. Masks straight into washer back down. Goggles wiped down with Don wipes. Gloves disposed after proper removal.
It protects others from us and if they wear them it protects us from them… however ‘it’ emerges and travels. Pure logic and physics and a bit of biology and chemistry.
I will not be having any rushed vaccine injected no matter what. I was the Thalidomide generation, and lucky my folks had their doubts.
I find the current government a bad joke in thrall of worse bad jokes. Never has politics of the least bad seemed so dangerous and frustrating.
The only thing worse is opportunistic opposition entities, political and media.

I went to my sisters for dinner tonight. In her small town everyone says hi to me as I walk .. into the COOP not one wears a mask except an elderly customer on the 8 in their
In Tesco only 3 people, no sign of masks either.
The only known case in the region was a nurse in the village magazine, she works in a Yorkshire hospital and must of caught a heavy dose there cos she needed 2 weeks in hospital, and couldn’t mange when she went back to work, so took more time off.
