More National Anniversaries – Tuesday marks the 80th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain Day. Is there something in the water? A half Italian cousin emailed me from Greece. Whilst wishing me greetings, apropos of nothing she followed her postcard message by adding that she hoped Boris would be ousted quickly.
Then friends today, when we met in their garden, suddenly mentioned that they couldn’t understand when someone with such dreadful views could be appointed by the Tories as a trade negotiator. We didn’t know how to respond, especially as we had just enjoyed their delicious lunch. Mr D did a sterling job by just saying he didn’t understand why someone’s views on marriage should affect their ability to make successful trade negotiations. I added that he had apparently done well whilst PM of Australia and we rapidly changed the subject.
I am sure neither would ever read this website. But why do people on the Left always think it is ok to sneer. Are they taught the technique on left leaning websites, receive emails from Labour on the way to attack? My usual response is to say thank goodness Corbyn wasn’t in charge. But it seems common to middle class Left who were desperate for Remain and still hope for their miracle.

I have two uncles, one in Canada and one in Australia. Both will sound off about Trump, in the certain (to them) knowledge that everyone agrees with them. I tend only to meet them at family gatherings, where I want to avoid creating an atmosphere at someone else’s celebration, so keep quiet. Plus, I never feel confident I have the facts at my fingertips to counter with.
How do others deal with this sort of situation which I’m sure I’m not alone in experiencing?

I have learned that most people just quote the latest newspaper article so I go to official docs or just have another published view
Usually they shut up….or call me something in which case I laugh and say each to their own….

There is a presumption, and reliance amongst many in the bubble who hold such views and, rightly, feel free articulate them, that these are shared by all.
Which is why they appear utterly flummoxed when reality bites in elections via secret ballot.
What is less pleasant is how they react when confronted by such reality.
To election results it seems years of lobbing spanners in the works, sulking and outright aggression is seen as acceptable. It isn’t.
I have taken to to light humour backed by fact in face of social media waves of bile, and the reactions range from stunned wagon circling to being ostracised.
No loss.
However the mutterings about how election results not being accepted by some are a worry.
Ooh, right up my street. My wife is a liberal, handwringing leftie snowflake, and Trump hater. She can’t justify any of her views, or give reasons, or offer any semblance of evidence for her animosity. Nor will she debate, which is very frustrating, so I just have to keep quiet.
We are in an isolated part of France (yay!!), but the closest English speaking neighbours are an American from North Carolina, and his Dutch wife. Both are getting on (like me) in years, dyed-in the wool lefties, climate change ‘believers” and paranoid to the “N’th” degree about COVID (here, where there’s no sign of it…), and vociferous Trump haters. Unlike me.
They came for aperos on Saturday evening, and despite promising himself not to start a discussion, he did just that and got very heated about the subjects I’ve just mentioned. In the end, he went and sat in his car in a huff, and they left. His wife said to me, on parting “You always think you are right!” She has a point, but I usually am. Needless to say Mme Goat and I have not spoken since. Which rather pleases me.
Anyway, that same evening, a sheepish American sent me an apology by E mail…

No you’re not alone. For some time my own family were incredulous about my support for Trump, and for some time I was somewhat hurt about my reception. Fast forward to today and I am perfectly comfortable with my position. So what if it gets up a few noses, I don’t want to lie and why should I? If they don’t like it to hell with them!
I see the task of Donald J. Trump as being that of a very imperfect man trying to lead the United States away from the influence of a bunch of unethical communist thugs and back to the Constitution.
This sneery attitude by left wingers is something thats taken hold only in the last few years. Prior to about 15 years ago, left , right and middle just rubbed along without malice, and plonked our cross at election time in the hope that our team would win. If we won, then great, but if we lost, then it was ‘oh well, there’s always next time, but we’ve got to suffer this lot until then.’
Brexit became the catalyst, along with Corbyn becoming leader, and its all been down hill since. Then the Uni idiots started ranting about cultural appropriation, cancelling debating speakers and suddenly it all started turning nasty. Friends and colleagues who once never bothered talking about politics began to be very vocal and opinionated, to the point of being bloody rude, and now we cant put the genie back in the bottle.
Its true, about keeping quiet once the ranting starts, as what is the point of losing friends, in a heated argument about whether Trump is a dickhead or not, or how Boris has been utterly shambolic. Sadly I’d rather they too kept quiet, as like wages, knowing the colour of their politics is something that should remain private.
I identified as broadly left wing and liberal in outlook for many years.
Several things changed that, one being the sneering attitude of many on the left. There is no excuse for it.
I noticed during the Brexit ref campaigns this characteristic becoming more apparent, on the internet but also the bbc.
I noticed them using words like ‘nonsense’ and ‘silly’ to discredit opinions other than their own.
(Btw, I now don’t affiliate to any defined political grouping and just judge issues and policies on their merits.)
But seppers – what principles do you apply ?
For instance I’m against the tide by wanting a smaller state – for instance –
the sheer size of the NHS –
or the contrast drone of people wanting something controlled or banned – without thought to long term threats to residual freedoms .
Or the spending – waste of other people’s money ( by the government ) which feels entitled to do so without challenge
Such things are general but look at the complete failure to either prepare or deal with Covid and you realise the great institutions of the UK really are not up to much these days – although they are very good at rewarding themselves ..
I’m probably akin to Frank Feild, or maybe Kate Hoey, though I wouldn’t vote Labour now.
I definately think the Left has changed in recent years, and some of the closing down of debate or different opinion puts me right off.
Hence why I’m on this site. I’ve been following for a few years and whilst my politics are probably a bit different to most, I totally agree about the bias and propaganda of the bbc. I think it’s wrong, even having been a bit leftie.
You could say ” oh you must be listening to the biased BBC ” . It’s no wonder you think like that .
I have a Brother-in law who lives in the USA and is a fairly high up environmental scientist with a Global Organisation. He is of course left-wing and bitterly opposed to Trump and Boris and until recently never missed an opportunity to say so loudly.
At the start of the “protesting” in the USA his attitude was that it was great that this might lead to the demise of the Republicans and especially Trump.
However, as things progressed and the violence and destruction took hold and became more sinister he has became increasingly quiet on the subject.
I now suspect that he is becoming ever more frightened of the outcome of mob rule and the threat to his, up to now, very comfortable jet-setting lifestyle, always at global conferences all over the World, with it’s 1st class airline seats, 5 star hotels etc.
It would seem that hard left-wing attitudes amongst the wealthy start to crumble when it begins to impact on their standard of living, safe environment and freedom. All of which have been enhanced by Trump!

One big factor in the government’s favour in this rerun of last years Remainer obstruction in Parliament is the fact that there is now a Speaker who takes impartiality seriously. Of course there will be great heat , noise , posturing by Remainers in both houses but I think it certain that the bill will eventually pass. I suspect that the EU knows this will be the case and will probably start to negotiate properly from now on.
The punishment of those Tory MPs who vote against the government needs to be harsh, withdraw the whip , urge local Tory associations to withdraw support and attempt to force by elections. Make them Soubry like outcasts and get rid of them at the first opportunity.
The BBC report on the latest shooting of 2 police officers in LA by what looks like a black child (though admittedly the video footage is grainy) contains the following: ‘Protesters shouted anti-police slogans and blocked the entrance to the emergency room where the two officers are being treated’.

Twitter works best when you follow some people of interest to you, especially where they are a source of what the media doesn’t want you to know. Such people now are, unfortunately, increasingly likely to be banned by Twitter for spurious reasons.
You can block anyone who annoys you, though I prefer to mute. Muting means you don’t see what they’re saying, but they don’t know that so your failure to rise to their bait, or even acknowledge it can infuriate them.
The downside is to see the truly worrying perspective of the world that so many people hold. It’s an unpleasant mirror into the human soul which in my view often shows the true evil of today’s ‘left’.
Twitter is just the tool for the tools in the media.
As my mobile telephone is in the car for emergencies only, I’ll never engage with Twitter, just get up early, when the world’s your own, and enjoy the good news before most people awake…

The BBC have opened up some articles for comments and kids are saying we have to act now and blaming Donald Trump – which is what the BBC have brainwashed them into believing.
However to the more experienced and less gullible mind one can see straight through the BBC’s hypocrisy as their own massive carbon footprint dwarfs that of the average joe public.
But the BBC places themselves at the vanguard of the sneery liberal privileged elite who point fingers at others to make themselves feel important and to empower themselves while taking all the fruits of the Western Enlightenment culture they now claim to despise. They don’t do any real work they just produce fictions and narratives and film documentaries and emotional sound tracks. They are the freeloaders of society and they want to keep it that way.

The Guardian explains why the quacks have been so dilatory in dealing with our ills and gives skeptics the now familiar counter-battery retort: ‘Majority of doctors expect new Covid peak’
The Express puts up a handy smoke screen under which perhaps there may at last be some breakthrough against this covid obsession: ‘Lives at risk in cancer research cash crisis’
Even the freebie Metro takes to some long range sniping: ‘Student 19 clobbered for bash at home. Fined £10k as party breaks covid rules’
Perhaps the worm will turn at last? Meanwhile it’s business as usual for the Remoaners: ‘Law chief leads Brexit rebellion’ says the Times, hopefully.

In the same paper the corporate crony left are on electoral manoeuvres in the States: ‘Bloomberg pledges $100m to help Biden’ – no doubt the Wall Street candidate will be expected to keep open borders and cheap labour.
One suspects tabloid editors read the broadsheets and crib certain stories. Yesterday’s old parrots report from the Times turns up in the Star giving that paper today one of the laziest two headlines for yonks: ‘Phew! It’s a scorcher 35c’ and ‘Sick as a parrot’ – come on the Star – you can do better…

In a tragedy reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet, a couple in Nigeria killed themselves earlier this month after their parents had forbidden them from marrying because one of them was a descendant of slaves. “They’re saying we can’t get married… all because of an ancient belief,” the note they left behind said. In my sporadic R4 listening this morning, I caught the Prime Interview slot at 8.10 a.m. which surprisingly was not conducted by the ‘needles under the fingernails’ Mishal (although she was co-presenting TOADY today) but by JustRemainIn Webb. He started his campaign against Diversity in the Rule of Sick by interviewing frequent contributor, Martin Hewitt, Chair of the Police Chiefs Council or Federation.
Mr Hewitt did not oblige JustRemainIn and did not say on air what JustRemainIn and the BBC wanted as an anti-Diversity and anti-Government sound-bite.

JustRemainIn moved on to interview Lord Sumption about the Rule of Sick and to campaign some more against diversity. But Lord Sumption (for a ‘seventy-something’) was in a boisterous mood and full of the joys of spring or Indian Summer. Are we allowed to call it that now? Probably not.

For an old dear with his faculties in full flow, Lord Sumption dismissed all the arguments put forward by a rather fascistic JustRemainIn with ease. No anti-Government soundbite to be obtained there, either.

Mrs S and I had a couple of nights in a hotel in a fine English small town centre.
At breakfast we noted all the guests were white, retired, and could be presumed to be middle class (based on location). None were overweight. Despite their age (average 65+) all were sprightly, and dressed in shorts and trainers and such like, ready for a sightseeing day.
So here we have middle class, white people, who look after themselves and are putting money into the economy..

But none of them appear to grasp that the EU are using the complexities of Brexit and the Good Friday agreement to drive a wedge between Northern Ireland and Great Britain and thus create a negotiating position to get a trade deal exclusively in their interest.
The absence of discussion on this point at the BBC shows the Remoaners are still holding on by their fingernails.
Indeed, I need to do another TOADY post. It is interesting, however, that the BBC – with all their concern over UK Food Banks and nutrition and possible shortages of food after Brexit and the future of farming in the UK – are quite happy to see the people of Northern Ireland go short of food and the people of Britain be unable to support British farmers in Northern Ireland.
