Wow, that’s really interesting.
I’ve been liberal/left/green much of my adult life but started feeling really uncomfortable with it about five years ago – and this makes sense of quite a lot. (I obviously need to read more!)
It makes sense of a lot of the current workings of the bbc. Eg I just couldn’t make out why no one was questioning why XR were protesting trains in London (mass transit, therefore sustainable transport), but I guess its pretty obvious they aren’t just about the environment.
Actress Thandie Newton has said she is reverting to the original Zimbabwean spelling of her first name, Thandiwe.
The actress has hitherto been known as Thandie, an anglicised version of her name with the “w” absent.
All of Newton’s films will be credited with the name Thandiwe (pronounced “tan-DEE-way”) Newton in future.
“That’s my name. It’s always been my name. I’m taking back what’s mine,” Newton told British Vogue.
The actress, whose full name is Melanie Thandiwe Newton, said her name was misspelled in the credits to her first film in 1991, Flirting
Except, of course, her first name is actually Melanie and she was born in London and grew up in the vibrant cultural melting pot that is Penzance which is quite some distance from Zimbabwe, I believe.
But, hey, let’s jump on the ethnic bandwagon which is a clever career move and with all those unrepresentative TV advertising and film roles reserved for certain folk.
The Sage, this gave me a chuckle “and grew up in the vibrant cultural melting pot that is Penzance which is quite some distance from Zimbabwe”. I don’t know why Thandiwe did not use the English meaning of her Zimbabwean given name: ‘Beloved’. I bet Equity did not have a Beloved Newton on their books at time of registration.
BTW, on radio last night she said her name as Th andi weh, soft th and truncated weh, not way.
R4 news at ten last night gave her mate Jamille/a (?) a lengthy space to complain about how black women like Thandi (and Jamille/a, presumably) needed to ‘reclaim’ (?) their place in a world allegedly dominated by…well, you know, those who aren’t. Working from my imperfect recollection now, but was there a chap named Henley who gave her all that space?
I wasn’t really paying much attention (generally R4 has now become a background noise, at best, ready to get switch off). Was thinking about Zimbabwe: once it had huge potential. Food production and exportation. I visited in the 70s, and things looked fine despite the great intnl boycotts. Couldn’t get proper chewing gum, though, if I had to search for some little moan.
Now the place is a ruin, and hunger dominates the people who were supposed to have been ‘liberated’ when Smithy was quietly disposed of by the British government. Can’t see Thandi/we rushing back there.
Interesting though, to speculate about what it is that now makes the Jamilles and Thandis think they have the track record to run the show. They seem little more than big mouths, being given a lot of space by the likes of beeb.
Anyway, keep your mouth shut and keep paying that beeb licence fee. R4 staff are ever so grateful, ta. Come to think of it -just like Zimbabwe- R4 is also a ruin now, but once had great potential.
Buried higher up this thread and responding to a comment about woke University Challenge questions to do with slavery, this gentleman has gone and linked a question setter to an article he wrote for the Guardian on the very same woke Leftist slavery self-flagellation theme.
If this is all true, and why should it not be, then this must surely represent tremendous proof not only of the scale of the insidious, ingrained Leftist bias of the biased BBC but the hidden depths to which they are prepared to go to keep it all in place.
Recruiting a left wing question setter who then sets left wing questions about his favourite topic on a quiz show has to be right up there.
University Challenge’s use of metric measures annoys me. In Britain we use miles for distances and feet for heights, but not the BBC, it seems.
However, I did notice in the final Paxman used “BC” instead of “BCE” which had previously been used. Perhaps it was a slip of the tongue? Hope he doesn’t get cancelled.
Together with the repulsion you must now feel when using your granny’s old silver sugar bowl – sugar, slavery: obvious connection, makes sense – thanks to BBC Antiques Raidshay.
If ever a rusty machete turns up, maybe the AR audience member of favor might be invited to the fore to remember the happy Mau Mau days slicing and dicing farmer families? Not so long ago.
Well I still struggle with getting my tongue around…….
Chiwetel Ejiofor (had to cut and paste), all very well having tribal names, but sorry, in the Western world Cary Grant is so much easier to say 🙂
I think naga ‘let’s not talk about race ‘ manchetti should use her real name instead of being to whitee rule …..
Elsewhere – the dirty jap olympics is starting to look shaky – the chinkie virus numbers are going up and they’ve cancelled a dry run of the water polo…..
You have got to feel for the BBC, that great upholder of liberty and justice. It must be agony. On the one hand the ideal time to play the race card regarding covid passports, on the other the need to toe the establishment line. Bearing in mind their remoaner brexit stance, which was backed by the Establishment, including the great majority of MPs of all parties, I think I know which way they will go. And therein lies the problem of disestablishing this infernal organisation, it is backed by the smug, never had to hide behind the sofa to avoid the electric man, elitist, sneering, know it all robots who have their hands on the levers of power. Nonetheless, keep up the fight, if only to get up their self-serving noses.
What are ‘green jobs’, I’m an engineer with decades of experience in ‘environmental engineering’ and ‘sustainable engineering’, and I don’t have a clue what ‘green jobs’ are supposed to be, they’re certainly not in my field (which is shrinking), that’s for sure… so what exactly are they? (Are they even a real thing?!)
I have along post on this as an answer to ‘Green jobs’. I thought I would post on the next ‘Wednesday’ edition so we all know where this leads (if it happens at all). Its not what we all think, I suspect.
I gather the Mayor is getting a bit desperate for votes and is trying to favour the ‘yoof vote’ with a proposal for the legalisation of cannabis in the capital. I would have thought that that measure would have required Parliamentary approval.
I believe that Khan is eying an opportunity suggested to him by the antics of Sturgeon in Scotland and Drakeford in Wales i.e. moving towards a self governing republic of London and thus breaking away from the United Kingdom and it’s parliament and thereby establishing Khan, Sturgeon and Drakeford as supreme and eternal rulers of these new republics.
I can bet that the same thoughts are going through the minds of similar officials in other areas of the UK where enough diverse support can be mustered like Leicester, Bradford etc.
We might even see a return to the days of private regional mercenary “armies” that were common in the medieval era. All fighting each other for their masters over local power and land.
You can in fact describe the use of the word “green’ to describe someone in another sense, for instance someone who is “green’ is someone who does not understand what is really going on and who are blind to the real motives of other people’s suggestions.
Maybe Khan means this?
Or is it simply to secure the 170,000 votes he needs to stay top of the muck heap?
Don’t assume cookery programmes aren’t agenda driven. I gave up Great British Menu or whichever the one is with Greg and John, when I noticed young women predictably reached the next round whatever the standard of their cooking. I gave up on Great British Bake-off when I noticed Paul was critical of the taste of food when by appearance of their baking exceeded the others eg poor Brendan with his fabulous and exact decoration didn’t get through but Nadia’s cackhanded peacock was highly praised.
Oxford Astra-Zeneca vaccine still in the firing line…..
So, of the six or more vaccines currently approved and being used, which has had the most criticism?
Which of the others has been subject to any scrutiny or criticism? Which has suffered the most wastage as a direct result of the ‘creative negativity’ from the EU and France in particular?
And which is available at cost, being a significantly cheaper option than all the other giant pharma productions put together?
As Heseltine, Major and other such bravehearts would say, coincidence, simply coincidence.
Seven people have died from unusual blood clots after getting the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in the UK, but the medicines regulator has said the benefits continue to outweigh any risk.
Simon Calder on Look North saying people might want to go abroad to see loved ones they haven’t seen for some time. I haven’t seen my son in London either, it is no excuse for going abroad. (Sorry Fedup2).
Then Peter Levy highlighted Muslims who want to go to Pakistan for Ramadan to do charity work or for other reasons. They will, said Peter, then need to isolate in airport hotels for 10 days. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.
Mr Hudson tells us that temperatures tonight may drop as low as minus 5 and will be very cold until at least until next weekend. Global warming? Peter Levy didn’t ask Paul about it.
