They were well beaten by an old episode of Vera on ITV3 between 8pm and 10pm

Once again Sky Aus goes where the BBC won’t in exposing Biden’s utter uselessness at the Putin summit. (And it was a Putin summit, where he got all he wanted and conceded nothing.)
Includes a small montage of just some of his many gaffes, ending with minder/wife Jill dragging him away from journalists – like a care worker for the mentally retarded – before he can put his foot in it any deeper.
    What a joke.

Can someone youthful on this site inform me what the thin little, tube like, celophane wrappers with green strips across them at regular intervals contain and are for? I know the shiny little metal canisters that you see littering our UK streets are for nitrous oxide (or possibly worse?), now a popular drug of choice for those young things needing some recreation. But these green stripped tubes are are a puzzle.

I’ve just been reading that it’s five years since Jo Cox was murdered. Terrible, and the perp received just punishment. Various colleagues are quoting her mantra “we have more in common than that which divides us.” I’m a bit of a grammar policeperson; I don’t understand the meaning of “I would of thought” for example.
However, no matter how many times I read the phrase, I am always puzzled as to why “That which divides us” has more in common than we do? We can have things in common; how can things which divide us have more in common than we do?

When the Saint Jo Cox said that it wasn’t supposed to be questioned or analysed. You are just supposed to admire her wisdom and repeat the phrase ad nauseum.

If she had instead said, “blessed are the cheese makers” you woud still get the likes of the BBC and MP Jess Philips quoting it daily.

“we have more in common than that which divides us.”

Most of us are human, air-breathing bi-peds. We have these characteristics in common.

Some of us support Arsenal Football Club, some of us support Liverpool Football Club. The attachment to one of those clubs divides those fans from the supporters of the other club. But even in that state of division both groups of supporters share a common love of football.

It follows that we all have much in common with each other and that which divides us might be small in proportion.

The Cox mantra is trite though and of little value. In 1939 the peoples of Germany and the United Kingdom were mostly white, European, Christian and spoke Germanic languages. They did, however, have some differences in politics…

TWatO Watch #1 – I smell some dodgy fear fi fo fumm science

Item One on TWatO’s agenda today was the rise in Covid infections. I sniffed some very dodgy science from Prof Paul Elliott from – where else but – Imperial College. I think he misused the word ‘exponential’ claiming an exponential rise in infections comes from that signifier that keeps getting lost and is suddenly found again in order to ramp up Project Covid Fear – the ‘R’ rate.

Prof Elliott claimed an ‘R’ just above one signifies exponential growth in Covid infections. Snuffy is not good at maths so I would have thought you would need an ‘R’ rate at 2.0 or above to get an exponential curve, disregarding random human behaviour. Am I wrong?

Secondly, the rise in infections is apparently restricted to two narrow age ranges: Infant/Primary school children and young adults in the 25-30 age range. I would have thought that that is where Covid infections do the most ‘good’ (if a virus can do ‘good’): it helps to build herd immunity for the future.

Something smells very dodgy about it and Sarah was unable to spray any really good air freshening questions around.

Exponential generally refers to something increasing rapidly. Time is the important factor rather than the size of the increase.

“I would have thought that that is where Covid infections do the most ‘good’ (if a virus can do ‘good’): it helps to build herd immunity for the future.”

You seem confused about the meaning of herd immunity.
Having a pool of infection in the population is rarely a good thing. Think of John Snow, cholera, and the Broad Street pump.

      • Up2snuff says:

Prof Elliott refered to an increase of their (Imperial’s) spot measurement every ten days. That’s a gradual increase, not an exponential one. Graphs of exponential curves tend to steepen, if I recall correctly.

I’d prefer not to think of Jon Snow. I’d rather think of cholera, actually, which is a bacteria not a virus.

      @Up2snuff I disagree with P
Any R rate above 1 is exponential
Granted people think that time has to be rapid,
      but that is not true.

If your savings account interest rate is 0.01%
Your investment still rises exponentially ie the annual cash payment gets bigger and bigger, rather than you ever losing money.

Herd immunity yes I agree with @Snuffy herd immunity is good
It’s not about “Having a pool of infection”
Rather after it has spread through the community so it’s fully of now immune people, the spread web is full of dead ends.

Sure the disease can come back in from abroad and bump into someone that was never infected,
say a woman that had been isolating cos pregnancy
it would not spread to her husband, doctor, mother etc. cos they’d have already had it.
And on the offchance they weren’t immune it would probably hit another dead end at the next person.

The term exponential is about rate of increase, not necessarily size of increase.

“Rather after it has spread through the community so it’s fully of now immune people, the spread web is full of dead ends.”

I’m struggling to follow your esoteric use of the English language but if an infection spreads through the community there will be lots of dead people, quite literally dead ends. Vaccination is the key to herd immunity.

Me “Any R rate above 1 is exponential

          but that is not true.”

@Piku “The term exponential is about rate of increase, not necessarily size of increase”

Doh, I’ve always been talking about the rate of increase
The R number is about “RATE” of increase.

Now when it comes to Covid ANY R number is an increase in the number of cases
If there are 100 cases and the R number is 0.5 you end up with 50 extra cases

If it’s above 1 you are into exponential
say from 100 cases it’s an extra 101
In a given number of weeks you still have a doubling

If the R rate is 2 then basically you are doubling every 10 day cycle
from 100 cases you get 200 extra then 400 extra
          that’s “proper exponential”
… yet the extra 101 scenario although small is still exponential

if an infection spreads through the community there will be lots of dead people, quite literally dead ends

nope the vast vast majority of people who get Covid do not die
          the high ninety percents survive.
Those that do die, almost always didn’t have many extra years left in them

Yes, that is what Prof. Elliott claimed Stew. But one person infecting a bit more than one person, so one person and a tenth of another requiring another nine sick people to come along and complete the infection of the 1/10th infected person to give you eleven new Covid infected-people after ten days doesn’t seem to me visually to provide a nice steepening curve that could be described as exponential.

Your example of savings again rings an alarm bell in my head. Interest is compounded. Can a Covid infection be compound or is it simple? Or am I simple? Probably. Despite the fact that I’ve just had a post-prandial nap.

The other thing about the ‘R’ rate is that it assumes constant similar behaviour of everyone. It falls apart when, say, one person immediately feels unwell at 11 p.m. and hides under their duvet for fourteen days while fighting Covid with influenza-type medicine before getting better.

        • JimS says:

If the R rate was 100 and one person had the new variant then the next day 100 people would have it. The day after 10,000 and the day after that 1000,000. The day after that we would run out of people to infect but let’s call it 100,000,000.

Of those maybe 100,000 would die. That’s it. Panic over. Herd immunity achieved in under a week.

High R rates aren’t of themselves a bad thing, it is how ill people get and the death rate that matters.

But is there a case to go back to incandescent bulbs?
Think about it. They get hot. Which helps heat your home, and thus incrementally clicks off the central heating thermostat.

But gas central heating uses…well, gas. Whereas electric light bulbs use electricity, which increasingly we are told is environmentally friendly and sustainable. All that wind. All that sun. Supposedly. And in Summer it’s light until 9 pm so the lights are only on for a couple of hours anyway.

As with hybrid cars, what we conveniently do not see are the whole system/ life cycle impact calculations of measures. Instead we get the on-trend narrow absolutist coverage of only that which fits the narrative.

I still maintain my 14 year old 50 mpg diesel with all the energy cost of car production already sunk is one of the most environmentally friendly cars on the road.

Although I was split between GBNews and the footy – the point Brillo was making about advertisers banning GB News is that they have now entered the political forum and therefore must be held accountable .
The main thing must really be – who exactly is deciding to ban GBNews and on what exact ground .

In n ideal world shareholders would hold these people to account – but there is no transparency – no accountability – or reasoning as to why these companies are taking the action they are ….
…….. and when public bodies like the OU declare against GBNews there must be public accountability – which must cost the OU money .

Any organisation or business which has an influence on public opinion is at risk of infiltration – as the GBN situation clearly shows. The work started as the germ of an idea back in the 1960s and since then has mushroomed to encompass most of the media, the civil service, NHS, police, military, teaching – from playgroups to universities – and far more too numerous to list, all with an increasing and frightening ability to defy truth and distort normal human behaviour.
Joyously, if you even suggest as much you’re paranoid, or a racist. And if you challenge either label, that makes you a far-right paranoid tory-scum gammon racist.

In all their reports on the Manchester bombing, the BBC are leaving out one significant piece of information: a security guard felt something was amiss but “feared he would be branded racist if he confronted Salman Abedi”.

The BBC are asking lots of hard questions about the police, the organisers, the security company involved, the stewards, the training, the cctv cameras etc.

I have some hard questions for the BBC:

Which national broadcaster cries ‘racism’ every time a BAME is stopped and searched?

Which national broadcaster is the first to shout ‘islamophobia’ every time the police suspect someone who is of a bearded persuasion?

Which national broadcaster continually decries and condemns racial profiling?

Which national broadcaster and opinion former, by ceaselessly banging on about racism, has created a national state of psychosis and paranoia such that a security guard daren’t do his job for fear of being branded racist?

Which national broadcaster is therefore partly responsible for 22 dead, 800 injured and countless traumatised?

And why do you continue to omit that very significant piece of information from your reports, thereby proving you have learnt nothing?

I can tell that the chair ( report drafters ) have done a very good job – and the next 2 reports are likely to be even more painful .

However – will anything change to reduce these vermin from committing such crime ? No – not really – the weakest target will be selected – and if someone is willing to die doing what they are doing – in the name of a false religion – what can really be done ?
Last week it was the result of the London Bridge inquest – with ITV referring to a ‘police firing squad ‘ to pump enough rounds into the Muslim terrorist murderer to stop him from detonating the bomb they thought he was wearing .

Covid has taken attention away from this . But the scum is still with us .

All true vlad, but I think it’s fair to add that the line ‘…feared he would be branded a racist…’ is a great get-out-of-jail card under the circumstances.

It seems everyone involved had a reason or excuse for inaction, but the most grievous of them is that the bastard Abedi was in our country in the first place.

Maybe so, but I believe his ‘fear of racism accusation’ explanation.
I once saw a white security guard wrestle a black shoplifter to the ground in order to stop him escaping. The entire surrounding crowd were on the shoplifter’s side, abusing the guard and cheering the thief.

And a footnote to the Arena story: someone did report the bomber to a security guard, who just fobbed him off. The guard’s name? Mohammed Agha.

British broadcast news has gone badly wrong

    #2 Rod Liddle
    https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/a-breath-of-fresh-airwaves
Excerpt Now we are in a situation where perfectly respectable scientists will be barred from the airwaves if, for example, they doubt the wisdom of that Swedish doom goblin, Greta Thunberg, or are less than sure that lockdown is the best way to combat the pandemic, or are worried about the possible side effects of the various Covid vaccines. Or at least they may be allowed on, briefly, but only once and only then if it is made clear that they are wrong by the presenters, or a ‘correct’ scientist has the final say. Never before have we so needed free and open public debate; never before has it been so constrained.

Meanwhile, you will not hear Tommy Robinson on your radio. Nor the excellent David Starkey. These are now non-people. If you are a journalist or a historian, you will not be asked to front a documentary if you believe that immigration should be more tightly controlled and that mass immigration has not necessarily improved our country — both views shared by the majority of people in the country, according to opinion polls — even if the documentary is about something else altogether. Nor if you believe that a human being with a vagina is most likely to be a woman.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-57521355
Two more arrested. No information other than their names so we can safely assume they are black like the others.
This story is significant because it is as much proof as we can get that black lives only matter when white people kill them. Blcks killing whites is fine as is blacks killing blacks.
You don’t get much more racist than that.
The BBC article is noteable for it’s brevity compared to the others.
‘Ms Johnson was rushed to hospital following the incident, which happened in the back garden of a house.’. Bit more to it than that BBC !.

Euro2020: Terrifying moment a Greenpeace protester parachutes onto pitch before Germany vs France
    Evening Standard … https://youtu.be/KDVWclRNjys
Greenpeace has apologised after two people were hospitalised with head injuries in its “reckless and dangerous” parachute stunt against a Euro 2020 sponsor last night.

Plastic and metal rained on to the pitch and into stands when the protester hit overhead spidercam TV cables as he paraglided through the open roof just before the France v Germany game kicked off in Munich.
He then lost control of the seated microlight with a rear fan propelling him under a yellow parachute at the Allianz Arena.
French manager Didier Deschamps was forced to take cover as the activist, who struggled to right himself, narrowly avoided landing on his dugout and a group of fans in the front rows.
