    Curious how when the BBC makes women suffer it’s society’s fault….nowt to see here [and nowt to see on the BBC]….

    ‘Nandy said: “We recognise there are problems with the licence fee. Fewer and fewer people are paying it.

    “It’s unenforceable and, particularly, I’ve been very concerned about the way it’s been enforced in the past, with women – particularly vulnerable women – targeted for enforcement action, and the BBC itself has accepted that.”

    Two BBC reviews found the gender disparity had been due to societal factors.

    The review in 2017 detailed a gender skew towards women-only households, a greater likelihood of women answering the door to TV Licensing Enquiry Officers and a higher chance of them engaging positively with an officer. ‘

    The BBC has always protested loudly about a subscription service…claiming it is technically unfeasible…but it’s not is it? Looks like that may be the end result perhaps…

    ‘Nandy has previously said the charge was “deeply regressive” and that she was thinking “quite radically and creatively” about alternatives. But the minister has ruled out using general taxation to fund the BBC.

    She did, however, keep open the possibility of a subscription model.’

    It says…

    ‘A BBC spokeswoman said: “The public cares about the BBC…’

    No not really….most probably like me very selective…and certainly not believe any news that comes from the BBC….take the sport and the weather in the main….everything else is so loaded with messaging that it is completely untrustworthy.

    “Chateauneuf du Pope!” – as Del Boy Trotter might have exclaimed, we’ve all gone Vatican crazy.

    Apostate Irish comic Dave Allen must be spinning in his agnostic grave as the British press suddenly perform three Hail Marys and an Our Father and uniformly splash (with Holy water?) their frontpage and top of the broadcast headlines with Francis funeral stories.

    And to think Philip of Spain had to go to the trouble of launching an Armada in the hope of returning this heretic island to the faith.

    The ever-excitable Mail on Sunday typifies this odd news moment where the focus of top stories eminating from our mainstream is anything but a catholic spread of subject matter and instead it’s all gone transcendental holy smokes: As world says farewell to the people’s Pope… a miracle in the Vatican?

    The Mail refers of course to: Hope amid the grief… Trump and Zelensky locked in discussion at the Pope’s funeral yesterday

    Perhaps, just as the news event of Putin’s invasion back in February 2022 signalled Covid no longer being ‘the top thing’, so now we’re on the cusp of Ukraine about to begin the short transitionary process of no longer being ‘the top thing’?

    From ‘the people’s’ little Jewish bloke in a khaki vest… over to our saviour – the hoped for new people’s Pope… of a darker hue…?

    I guess it’s the sheer globalism of the event that so excites our liberal one world-minded anti-parochial media: From beyond the grave, Francis may have brought peace a little closer – gushes Tim Stanley in the Telegraph; Presidents, prime ministers, princes and paupers gathered in St Peter’s Basilica…hope amid the tears – enthuses the sentimentally socialist Mirror; World leaders unite for Pope… Huddle Macron, Starmer, Trump and Zelensky talk privately at Vatican funeral (Sunday People)

    Will Pope Francis Be Made a Saint? – asks the left-leaning New York Times

    “No, missus… titter ye not. Don’t mock Francis” – as Frankie Howerd would have said.

    It seems almost a mortal sin to speak of it… but in other news…

    One wonders what this story will be all about? Will we ever get to know who did this and the motivation behind it? Perhaps not. Still, you know what they say… the Canadian mounted police… they always get their “Man”

    Another tragic event in Vancouver, as a malicious car has gone on the rampage, killing civilians who were enjoying a street festival.

    Meanwhile, Mark Carney, the present prime minister, makes the usual noises, thanks the police, asks people not to jump to conclusions and promises swift action. Oh yes, we all know what that means; more platitudes, a few verses of “Don’t look back in anger”, a mound of flowers, lots of candles and then…sweet FA…

    You know, sooner or later, either our politicians or the general public, will start wondering why events like this always occur in “enriched” western cities.

    And never in Budapest…
